    Community Note: Sony didn't buy Kadokawa outright, just some shares in the company . Your Fromsoft games are safe folks lol

    • @JLMetak
      @JLMetak 2 дня назад +24

      FromSoft was already very much tied to Sony so they weren't the ones at risk: Spike Chunsoft and Acquire (and possibly more) would have been the big victims of a potential buyout

    • @JCSA79V
      @JCSA79V День назад +4

      @JLMetak I don't think they were ever at risk to be honest. Kadokawa was in talks to be acquired by the greater Sony group, not specifically Sony Interactive Entertainment who run Playstation. Bungie weren't acquired by the SIE branch and didn't become part of PS Studios. The Demon Slayer games are multiplat despite being Sony IP, etc.

    • @MadfireMonkey
      @MadfireMonkey День назад

      Demon Slayer is not a Sony IP

    • @JCSA79V
      @JCSA79V День назад

      @MadfireMonkey I misspoke. The anime is produced by Aniplex (owned by Sony Music), and the recent games are based on the anime, which they publish in Japan, and are cross platform. Sony Music do quite a bit of game publishing, entirely separate from the PlayStation business. Likewise Bungie were acquired by Sony, but not the PlayStation branch of the company, and it wasn't SIE that were attempting to buy Kadokawa. If the deal went through, they would have likely been a subsidiary of Sony Music like Aniplex, because Sony wanted Kadokawa for the anime and manga and weren't especially interested in the gaming side of it.
      A big reason why the deal didn't go through was because Sony didn't want the whole company, it was just the anime and manga, but Kadokawa wanted the whole company to be purchased. The 10% was a compromise that both ended up agreeing to in the end.

    • @JCSA79V
      @JCSA79V День назад

      @MadfireMonkey I misspoke. Yes, though the anime is produced by Aniplex (a Sony Music subsidiary) and the Demon Slayer games are based on the anime adaptation. Aniplex even publish the games in Japan. Aniplex actually does a fair bit of game publishing, entirely separate from PlayStation, and multiplatform.
      Bungie was not acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment and thus do not operate as part of PlayStation Studios. Kadokawa was not an acquisition target of SIE, but the larger Sony organisation, and their intent was to buy the company for the anime and manga side of the business - not the gaming stuff. If the deal went through, Kadokawa would likely function as it already was, but operating under Sony Music like their other anime/manga businesses.
      A big reason for the acquisition not going ahead was because Sony didn't want the whole of Kadokawa, but Kadokawa wanted a complete sale. The 10% was a compromise that both parties came to in the end.
      Hopefully this comment sends this time.

  • @ladysegagenesis
    @ladysegagenesis День назад +1

    Some things I want to note is that a reason for all 3 series getting revived could be due to Nintendo admitting that going forward that game development is getting harder. So more and more game series are going to start to have larger gaps between entries. This could have been done to try to keep their game output (being Nintendo's major publish games) to have a lot less hiatus between games. Reason why is because since the technology is getting more advanced, it's going to become more expensive & time consuming to create games. Which brings us to some other things they might try to do to keep their game output high are doing things like hiring more employees, have more smaller experiment games/ports of games that cost much less to make, & work with more 3rd party companies. Which brings us back to the Mario RPGs. While Paper Mario was always a game series being handled by Inteligent Systems (who was always a close partner with Nintendo) working with 3rd party companies like ArtePiazza & Acquire/Fromsoft is probably what they were looking for, in terms of finding more developers to help them. But that's just what I think!

    Super Mario RPG is not a series as "series" implies multiple entries. At best, you could say that it is the father of the Paper Mario series, since Nintendo wanted that style of game to continue on without Square. Mario & Luigi is a 2nd RPG series from Nintendo, and Rabbids is something totally different made by Ubisoft. Of them, Paper Mario is the most recognizable and the most likely to carry on. Though it wouldn't shock me if all three series find new entries in the next generation.

    Paper Mario stands out visually as the most intriguing entry in the Mario series, with its unique art style and potential to explore deeper, more expansive stories within the Mario universe - though this potential is fully realized only if Miyamoto allows the writers to take creative liberties. Mario + Rabbids comes in second, offering a fresh twist by infusing the familiar Mario characters with the chaotic energy of the Rabbids, which adds an exciting, humorous flair to the otherwise predictable Mario line up.

    I think seeing all 3 (4 if we count Mario and Rabbids Sparks of Hope) in the span of 2 years again is unlikely and unwise. It was fine this time since we thought many of these series were dead (SMRPG for 25 years, Mario and Luigi as its developer was shuttered, and classic style Paper Mario for 20 years) and it was very cool to have them revived. But do that again and people will definitely have burnout, if not the developers too.
    Since all 3 of the RPGs are developed by different teams and all three series have their own distinct advantages and fanbases, I think it would be cool if we got a new RPG game every 2 years in a rotating fashion between tbe 3 series. That gives each development team 6 years in between titles, plenty of time to make quality experiences. And 2 years is enough that Mario RPG fans can dabble in some or all of the titles and not be fatigued, but regular enough so diehard fans of a particular subseries don't have to worry.
    I doubt it would work this smoothly in real life with development and release schedules the way they are, but it would be a cool goal to strive for.
    As for Mario and Rabbids, I loved those games, but Ubisoft is going to Ubisoft. I don't really consider those RPGs but strategy games anyway, so I think they are different enough they can be on their own schedule if Ubisoft gets its act together.

    Paper Mario will definitely be sticking around cause of how successful TTYD Remake was. I hope we get a new game that will be a spiritual successor to TTYD and maybe a remake of Paper Mario 64 getting the same treatment as TTYD has. Super Mario RPG Remake did do pretty well. But we haven't had any games or series based around Super Mario RPG playing similar to it. Maybe a Super Mario RPG 2 or whatever might happen and I hope they make the game at least more challenging cause the Super Mario RPG is very easy and pretty braindead at times. Mario & Luigi is gonna be very rough to come back because of Brothership having poor sales, mixed reviews and the team behind the game is having development issues with Sony. But honestly, Mario & Luigi are my least favorite out of the Mario RPG series. Not that there bad. Just not my type of style. Although I did enjoy Superstar Saga & Bowser's Inside Story. Other than that, I could care less about the series and it'll be a long time for them to make another one. And I can't say Mario + Rabbids will be back more often cause the creator & team left Ubisoft and other shenanigans that's going in Ubisoft. It's a shame cause I do love the Mario + Rabbids games. Almost on par with Paper Mario. But unless we find some sort of miracle, I doubt Mario + Rabbids will return soon. Or at least make another Tactical RPG/Strategy alike game starring Mario. The only kind of RPG games Mario hasn't gone through is Action RPG. Though I guess you can say Mario & Luigi are kinda Action based RPG since your are spamming buttons for more damage. I don't know. If not, I would like to see a Mario Action RPG that plays almost identical to Kingdom Hearts; but with better overwolrd designs and combat.

    I think all three have a good chance of coming back… and there’s also the worry (perhaps unfounded) for each to not come back.
    For Mario RPG, they could just not want to make a new one. Like, yeah, the remake sold very well and there’s every reason to make a new one. But at the same time, Mario Odyssey sold INSANELY well, and no sequel. I’m talking more than double Galaxy’s sales better, too. Nintendo also just never got Nintendo Cube on DLC for the hugely successful Switch Mario Parties. They don’t always care if there’s a massive pile of money on the table. Just take the money, we want to give you more. But no, they’re good.
    Of course, the director wants to do another one, and Nintendo seem to heavily respect the people behind these games. And even if I bring up the point Nintendo don’t always follow the money, they also are very capable of following the money. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got DLC years later, they did do Tears of the Kingdom, they saw traditional Mario Party worked, and so on. It’s the one I’m least confident they’ll do a new one, but it’s still very much possible.
    And Paper Mario, I am very confident they’ll do a new one that follows the traditional format because TTYD would not have been a thing if they weren’t willing to go back to the old style. Like, they would have known Mario RPG and Mario and Luigi were both in development around a similar timeframe as Paper Mario would’ve been. If they didn’t want RPG overlap for Mario, they would’ve greenlit a different, experimental Paper Mario or one that followed in the successful footsteps of Origami King.
    But we have three games that follow a similar gameplay loop of turn based battles with action commands and have weird and unique characters, so I think they’re done with the adventure style for Paper Mario. But I do agree they’d take what worked from Origami King and put it in a new Paper Mario. Bigger worlds to explore, more cinematic and dynamic set pieces, and possibly a paper gimmick. And if we get that and a battle style like TTYD’s that innovates in fresh ways and a set of new partners, combining aspects of both could produce the best Paper Mario yet.
    Mario and Luigi is up in the air, since we don’t know how Brothership sold. But from what I’m hearing, Acquire are safe, so it’s just a matter of if the game sold well enough and if Nintendo are satisfied with Acquire’s first title to get a sequel from them, which I don’t see why not. I believe it got a more positive reception than the discussion online would lead some people to believe. Just a matter of when, for the brothers.

    I think a new turn based Paper Mario game is the most likely to show up first on Switch 2; seems like Nintendo is going to go with what the fans want rather than the modern style (which I don’t mind that style tbh, Colour Splash and TOK are great games in their own right)

    • @jaretco6423
      @jaretco6423 День назад

      Color Splash is mediocre at best and at worst, it's Sticker Star 2 but worst. Origami King is ok. I don't mind that. But I rather they bring back how the first 2 Paper Mario games handled the style. Bring back experienced points, level ups, badges, partners, etc. Than we're good.

      @diabeticman2194 День назад

      @ as someone who played CS and TOK before TTYD, I think both styles have their strengths and weaknesses. TTYD had high highs but also some low lows when I played it (mainly the backtracking/world exploring) if they have the story/battles of TTYD combined with the level design/exploration of TOK I think the next PM game will be phenomenal

    • @jaretco6423
      @jaretco6423 День назад

      @diabeticman2194 I don't have a big problem with the backtracking and world exploring in TTYD has because the worlds are fascinating and as long as the writing & gameplay works properly well, than it's not a big deal. Plus they are pretty solid design wise. Not the best. I agree. But certainly not the worst. Just good enough. But I do like what Origami King approach to the open world. So maybe I would like how OK handles the world mixed with the first 2 Paper Mario game's battle system.

    No question Paper Mario will continue. Super Mario RPG & Mario & Luigi will likely depend on the developers Nintendo can get for them / if ArtePiazza & Acquire will keep making them. I personally want a Super Mario RPG sequel to Not be in the exact same isometric style and instead go for a more traditional gameplay style like Dragon Quest or the other turn based Square Enix RPGs. I'd like it to pick up as if Super Mario RPG had been an ongoing series and was evolving over the years. But they'd likely need a higher caliber studio than ArtePiazza for that. Hopefully a higher team at Square Enix.

    *Preface:* I'm writing this before watching the video (yes, I know, sorry), mostly because I've coincidentally been thinking about this lately as well. In short, I think all 3 series can stick around, as they offer very different experiences from each other and serve different purposes and audiences:
    *Mario & Luigi:* This should be the beginner / entry-level RPG series. Besides only having to manage a party of 2 characters, Brothership also demonstrates its beginner-focus by telling the player to do standard RPG things like revisiting previous locations for new quests and explorable areas, and also has NPCs that tell you if you should level up your character more, or find better gear and equipment. Everyone has to start somewhere with RPGs, and Brothership, for all its flaws, does show that the M&L series can fill that role, while also being entertaining for experienced players.
    *Paper Mario:* Arlo especially is going to hate this, but I think at this point PM has settled into the "Adventure Game with whimsical writing and experimental combat" niche. I say "whimsical" here as the recent PM games definitely lean more into comedy, and have a different sense of humour than, say, Brothership, with the latter's writing being more subdued and understated. I also think allowing for experimental combat further helps differentiate the PM games from the other two series, as otherwise there would be 3 franchises that all share the underlying timed-attack DNA introduced in Super Mario RPG. Which is the perfect segue into...
    *Super Mario RPG:* I don't think Nintendo will do this, but evolving SMRPG into its own series would allow them to offer a "traditional" JRPG experience with Mario characters, with the complexity and depth of something like the Octopath Traveller games. Having to manage a party with multiple characters and classes, different story choices that actually lead to different endings, etc.
    Now to actually watch the video and see how off-base my analysis is, ha.
