My son is now a fresh,an in marching band, but for a much smaller (3A) school and I would like to show him some of our other shows. Mr. Fariss was by far the greatest band director ever!! Still have so much love and admiration for that man.
Yeah, ...thank God for youtube! I remember seeing Pearland's show that year and being totally amazed. Music and marching were both so well done. Got to see this show at UIL regional as well as this Sam Houston State competition. I went to Brazoswood and was glad to see Pearland go so far that year. Good Show! Thanks for posting.
Wow! I was an assistant director this year - actually, my first year band directing. Back when I was still Tina Hatcher. A great blast from the past to see many of my "kids" from my first year teaching :) GREAT show. And I remember how freaking COLD it was in the stands!!
cool, i was in the brazoswood band in 1992. it was always a good competition between the bands; though, pearland was really good that year. both football teams were terrible around that time, but at least they both have good football teams now.
Wow thank god for youtube. Where else can you see marching bands? They wont even show a few glimpse during half time. What I dont understand is that the younger generation now have music writing software/ Keyboards are so cheap they practacily give them away yet the quality of the bands leave a lot to be desire. Can you imagine if we had youtube back in those days to scout and compare the competition?
So much changes in 20 years... Look at this... no huge props, cymbals in the drumline, verbal countoffs, bell front euphoniums instead of marching baritones, guard members that actually look like human beings and not space aliens, and oh God the drum major uniforms... DCI and marching band in general has come a long way... but is it all for the best? Awesome show. Is this vid from state or another competition? P.S. Is that guy in the pit with the backwards sash supposed to be like that?
lol. there was no rig then. we played at the old high school stadium. the high school was 1 year old. i remember being amazed with the technology in the new schools band hall. practice rooms with intercoms so Mr. Farris could listen and yell at you from his office. His all seeing eye was always open! or... was it an all hearing ear?...
