- David is crazy, but crazy like a fox. He bought the cheapest BMW i3 in America with 135,000 miles on the clock and a battery pack. Due to an obscure California law he got a juicy new battery. What's the car like? Let's check it out.
PART ONE:
• I Bought The Cheapest ...
PART TWO:
• What It's Like To Driv...
PART THREE:
How many miles can David get by hypermiling the i3?
The best part is after 7hrs and 97 miles of driving, the main takeaway is you could have just relied on BMW’s range estimate from full (98mi) 🤣
I call fake. There were no spaghetti sauce stains in the shower.
Great content. Actual production values. Multicamera action. Look how far you’ve come!
At a point the battery continuously increasing in range becomes kidnapping to your riders. Great video content though lol.
96.7mi is 155.6km for those who aren't on the Imperial system. ;)
The break between days probably cost a few miles as the battery was not conditioned for day 2.
can we trust a guy that takes a dump right after a shower?
Right?!? “Order of operations”
apparently shower spaghetti works fast
Would have hit 100 without the extra people aboard probably
Oh, note! You probably would have made your 105 mile goal w/o the GoPro mount on the roof!
Great video DT! Keep your full lights off for a smidge of extra range... bimmercode the rear taillights on as DRLs
Thanks for the video. 🙂👍 You definitely weren't hypermiling with three people in the car and doing 40 mph. But it was a valiant effort from such a small battery. We have 52 kWh available in a Renault Zoe, just had a vacation, carrying two people plus fairly heavy luggage, and attained 5.7 miles per kWh, driving mostly on U.K. motorways and other main roads. That means a theoretical range of about 296 miles. I usually see at least 6 miles per kWh when on my own, in Summer, driving carefully, but without hypermiling.
And yes; true hypermiling can be fun, if you're patient and if you don't annoy other road users.
Cool video. Rolling down your window to stay cool versus running the AC is a questionable choice. The AC runs anyways because it’s needed to cool the battery pack.
Fantastic intro!
Me and my Bolt EUV enjoyed your hyper miling journey! Did you get your i3 in Vista where I live?
Yes!
David, are you really reading "Rust: the Longest War"? That's a great book.
Do it again, but this time with all the windows up all the time I bet you can reach 100 easily.
Your passengers were boring 😑
I am sure you would have made the 100 miles if you didn't add the two people...weight is a huge factor as always...but 96.7 ~ 100 let's just round!!!
The tires only last 15,000 miles!? That is nuts.
Wait till you hear about motorcycle tires.
My i3 drove like a bat out of hell my tires last 35k. There's also no chance his i3 is more expensive to drive than his 15mpg truck.
I have a front tyre which will need replacing either the next 12 months, and it's only done a little more than 8,000 miles in 2 years. That's not good. On the other hand, I've saved way more than the cost of new tyres by not spending much on electricity, road taxes, new vehicle taxes, maintenance, etc.@@markhaechler3512
HOLY GRAIL! Not referring to the manual trans Jeep, but rather the fact that your i3 has adaptive cruise-- reason being; do you intend to add the "Poor Man's Autopilot" i.e. the euro Traffic Jam Assist with the Quidzel dongle steering wheel hack? I would LOVE to see it--bump the max speed up to highway speeds and show us how wobbly the TJA purports to being above 45MPH.
You could say I'm in the market. I commute across the worlds longest continuous bridge over water over the Pontchartrain and I'm thinking the i3 at 65MPH for more hours of my life than I want and w/ an i3 + TJA lane keep "autopilot" it'd be like....vastly vastly a life improvement over my lovely Gen 1 Honda Insight w/o even cruise control.
So with the gasoline engine on is it now unlimited range with gas fill ups?
...Yep. As long as you don't mind stopping for gas every 80 miles (2 gallon tank😄)
i replaced my electric cars tires with generics. i hardly noticed any detriment to range. maybe a couple of miles a "tank"
But that's a REX model.
A small battery size means less mass and better efficiency, but the battery will be recharged more frequently, giving a shorter life. It's analogous to a smaller gasoline engine being lighter and giving better fuel economy, but wearing out sooner than a bigger, low-revving engine.
HE WAKES UP DIRTY! I KNEW IT!
Did you ever figure out whether the dealer gave you a new battery, or rebuilt an old battery? Is there anyway that you can tell?
I traded my 1997 Jeep ZJ in on an i3. Then found you have one too. Is this the new Jeep/GTI guy EV choice?
OK, so you didn't hit 100. But you were driving around for the majority of the time with two passengers AND you had the windows down a lot of the time. Both of these are going to significantly lower your overall range. I suggest you try it again, just you (DT) solo in the car, with the windows up, and probably when the weather is cooler. You'll break 100 easy.
so david is not in detroit subways anymore?
I don't think ppl realize how far 100 miles is lol
we call it a "guessometer" it doesnt really have a clue how far you can go.
Was not expecting David nipples
Totally fake! No spaghetti in the shower!
