    If you are getting a car loan for 6 years that is a huge mistake. The maximum car loan should be no longer than 3 1/2 years. They will maximize interest after that on your total payments.

    • @nicetoeveryonedontpushit3090
      @nicetoeveryonedontpushit3090 7 лет назад +17

      ThingsToDo Yeah, but you do not necessarily have to give the minimum each month. I would use 6 years as a safety feature because if employment ends or comes to a halt due to health issues I would rather have a $200 payment per month due than $500-$900/ month required MINIMUM. It depends on who will actually have the initiative to give more than the required minimum payment I guess. Otherwise I would agree--3-4 years max is the way to go.
      I would personally purchase a home with a $1,500 mortgage payment plus utilities a month than a car with those similar expenses if I already have a reliable car. As long as it is in the right spot because the $1,050 going to rent already would also go to the mortgage so technically it would be $500-$800 a month for mortgage and I'd still get to purchase a car if I needed it or wanted it.

      Car loans can make sense if you consider opportunity costs. If you qualify for a loan at 5% but you think you can yield 10% from investments, it makes sense to finance the car. Taking out a loan could give someone enough breathing room to contribute to a Roth IRA which has annual maximums -- if you skip a year, you don't get that opportunity to contribute back.

    • @drepop803

      paying in cash should be if you plan on keeping the car for many many years. I bought a car last November and am already thinking of trading or selling it. hasn't even been a year yet. thought about paying it in cash at the time but I was convinced by my shopping partner who was with me to finance instead. still might end up keeping the car but I have tons of money saved up that I didn't use to buy the whole thing in cash.

Most people don’t need a nice house. Does that mean they should just look for the bare minimum when they could actually afford something nice? No. Not everyone views their car as just an appliance like their toaster.

    This video conveys the absolute worst message to people in their 20's. The last thing you should do in your 20's is straddle yourself with this kind of debt in a severely depreciating asset. I'm a software engineer and I'm proud when I pull up with the worst car in the parking lot. You will always be chasing money, never getting ahead of it with this sort of advice. Not to mention you suggest they can pay repairs and maintenance with any sort of raises they get. This is the wrong financial mindset.

      Deven Swiergiel straight up. People like this seek validation in objects and people’s view of them. Buying a new car is one of the worst things you can do. It’s better to buy a used car cash and use your money smarter. You pay so much for a car instead of investing in your own home or real estate? I don’t understand. I’m 22, I’m an engineer in the Air Force and I can afford almost any car I want yet I have my Toyota Corolla 2007 that I bought in college. I just don’t understand the way people my age think.

      God forbid someone buys a nice car. "It's depreciating you're stupid for buying it" Shut up. For a lot of people the depreciation doesn't mean shit because when you're finally driving it, you don't care. The experience is well worth the cost. It's fun and exciting to finally be able to say you have the thing you've wanted for over a decade.
      I'm 19 and have a 2016 Mustang right now. It's losing value. Do I care? Fucking no. I walk away from it every day with a smile on my face. I'm looking forward to my next sports car :)
      Some people my age spend their money on nice clothes, some on technology, some instruments, what ever. I don't judge them and neither should they judge me.
      I don't understand how it's acceptable to look down on people who buy expensive cars, but mean and insensitive when done to other things like houses or clothing. Feels more of jealousy than anything else.

      @jasminee6330 3 года назад +1

      @@lou8047 If a house is one mil, you have to do the calculations and figure out what your regular expenses are per month. The usual rule of thumb is that you should be able to afford your one month mortage with one paycheck (assuming you get paid twice a month). Also have 10% in cash to maintain the house. so a 1mil$ house would be roughly 4500-4800 a month with a 30 yr fixed mortgage. ( assumijg you dont put anything down on the house) 20% is usually the norm. And a 100,000 savings... to be comfortable. So you would need 300k+ in savings, making at least 10k or so a month and managing expenses. This is all to afford a 1mil house comfortably

    This is for the people trying to decide their major. Before you pick engineering, here’s something to think about: if you finance one of the cars listed here, the rest of your lifestyle will be absolute bare minimum.
    Good work on the video brotha but there was no calculation for utilities, phone bill, STUDENT LOANS from getting the engineering degree, money going into savings and misc items like toilet paper, shampoo, hair cuts. Also, $1050 for housing in LA means you’re living a small room in an apartment with a few other people. Living in a shared apartment but driving around a $80K 5 year financed car with no income going into savings? Doesn’t make a lot of sense.

      I addressed your concerns in another one of my videos. In a nutshell, utilities are included in my rent, phone is payed by my company, student loans is $200 per month(yes forgot about these), 10% of my gross income goes to savings, misc items are very cheap since they’re shared among House mates.
      I’m no advisor, so I’m not recommending to do this, what I’m saying is that if someone really wanted to they could do it.

      This video is showing what you CAN afford. Emphasis on "CAN", meaning able to or having the ability to. Not necessarily what you will get. You can completely settle for a car worth less than that. & On top of that, this is what you can afford AFTER budgeting for necessities like tax and rent AND budgeting for hobbies and things you don't necessarily need to buy, but things you just want. It's not like these are the cars you can afford if you scrap every last penny of every check for the next 5 years. These are the cars you can afford post budgeting for a simple, comfortable life of your choosing. & I can't emphasize enough that this is just what you CAN afford. Like the top of the top of what is possible with this budgeting. You can get any car you want up to this peak price whilst budgeting for a comfortable life spending on other things.

    • @amit.verghese
      @amit.verghese 7 лет назад +19

      There are other cheaper ways to build credit score to that level. The cost of the interest paid for the 6-year car loan is vast vast higher than the cost of paying up front coupled with a credit-card way of building credit score. Better yet, wise rich people do NOT buy car on loans or buy upfront. They invest that upfront money, and the interest generated from the investment is what's used towards paying the monthly car payment. Ultimately, you didn't spend a single dime on that car - all that upfront money is still yours

      Assuming you max a roth IRA each year ($5500), and you get an 8% annual return, the difference in starting to save for retirement at 25 vs 30 is about $400,000. Investing at $5500 per year from 25-60 is about $1.3 million vs $900k if you wait till 30. If you wait till 40 you are down to $300k. If you want to retire and live on $80k a year from the interest you would need about $1.6 million. You need to look at how compound interest works, because lengthening the time your money has to grow by just a few years has a massive outcome on how much you have at the end.

    • @King-2077

      Randall George yea but if he enjoy cars then you cant blame him for putting most of his money towards a car he likes. Just like people who enjoys traveling and save all their money so that they can spend it all on their vacation or people who party a lot or spend it on gambling. When people spend their money on those things people dont seem to complain or judge. People spend money on things they like, nothing wrong with that.

      So that’s what you guys do? I’ve been meaning to try and choose a path in engineering because I share the same passions as you. I do a lot with computers, custom builds lol it’s kinda like art to me, but I love doing it. If I had the resources and proper training, I’m sure I would love to go into this field some day. I’m a junior in high school btw. I kinda think an aerospace path would be cool, cause I like flying as well, piloting commercially was one of my first desires in a career, until I found out how strict that line of work is when it comes to finding a job and actually getting good pay. I really like the idea of working on aircraft like that, even maybe drones or spacecraft. Lol I can dream...

    So i ran the math's after tax here in Norway working a full time+ in a gas station would actually leave me with more money after tax than an entry level engineer in the US, that's hilarious, of course companies pay different, the good thing here is that you don't really pay additional fees for health insurance or any other sort of crap, you only pay the taxes, you may choose to save up for retirement yourself, but the companies here are by law obligated to lay of some percentages for your retirement, how ever you don't pay or this.
    I used to work in a hotel for 3 years, reception, my hours could wary slightly but usually i sat with at least 4400 USD after taxes that i could spend on what ever, some of it went for rent etc.
    This really shows how different the standards are, i would personally never move to the US even if i were well educated, when i could do it here in my own country and earn way more for the same position.

    This video is the epitome of the financial mindset people have today. There is a difference between how big of a loan you can get approved for and what you can actually afford. As an accounting major on the path to graduating debt free without mommy and daddy’s help, I see students and even adults make dumb decisions based on this type of rationalization. I am so disappointed that other majors don’t require more financial literacy courses to help college graduates make educated choices. After all, these are the people who are considered to be “educated.” Those who comment “you might not see tomorrow” or “you have to enjoy life” are just delusional and have no sense of responsibility. I can make financially sound decisions AND enjoy life. And I’m an absolute car enthusiast too.

  • @ChuckBeefOG

    The problem with engineers (civil) is that they typically have zero experience working in the field. The last engineer i worked with on my last project didn’t know the difference between granular A base and pit run material. Yet he is in charge of a multi million dollar project. Needless to say it ran over budget and a year late. I have no faith in Engineers unless they have worked in the field as a labourer or worker before becoming an engineer. These kids that become something solely on the fact of pay, generally dont have their head in the game and are only thinking or the goods they can buy. Thats like me becoming a chef, but never cooking anything more advanced than kraft dinner.

      +Chuck Beef Haha. I actually agree with you! Fortunately , Electrical/Software Engineers could be “on the field” years before finishing school. • @ChuckBeefOG
      @ChuckBeefOG 7 лет назад

      My experience speaks ONLY to civil engineers. Mechanical and electrical may be a totally different story. It really makes a job go smoothly when you get the 50 year old engineer that was a junior surveyor for several years beforehand. Much respect to engineering when executed properly. Good luck in your career.

    • @nodishtoodeep3053

      Chuck Beef one thing I’ve noticed and personally tried to work around is that there is very little awareness of exposure opportunities while at university. Sure you can get an internship, but that’s about it. Not very many students know or have been informed about the opportunities of job shadowing or professional project sit ins.
