- Sonic 2 XL is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive by Captain Bozo and Ranger. Rings are replaced with onion rings, and Sonic becomes fatter after eating them.
This is tool assisted speedrun with all chaos emeralds.

@@Disheartthornit wouldn’t be hard to make a code for him, at least when playing as tails alone, you’d just copy the code from sonic, give tails… unique sprites, and you’re done.
The fact that there’s a speed run amazes me how far this game has come

And someone took the time to make this TAS, yep it's not a real speedrun because a TAS is kinda cheating.
@@kinghotcoc0 well other then slowing the frame rates and using save states, its still fair play. TAS does what is theoretically the fastest time possible to beat a video game. So not cheating per se, rather just using things to assist you.
Yeah, for most speedruns having assistance from computers is cheating, and save states are like a segmented run, frame by frame doesn't require the frame perfect muscle memory for timings and all that, so in general it's just not a fair playing level.

It's insane to me that you're able to not only speed run this, but also get all of the emeralds.
All of the emeralds whilst still being in Emerald Hill zone too which is impressive

@@Typicalmemer._.it’s not a bot, TAS stands for tool assisted speedrun because the speed runner is using tools like frame by frame and save states to create a theoretical perfect speedrun.
Now imagine if rings made you fat in special stages.
They should've had it so in addition to the regular challenge you had to periodically pick up question mark orbs or you'd slow down until you couldn't move and lost the stage. You can't actually die in these stages so losing is the worst that can happen.

But the emerald grind was the most interesting part. Having to balance getting enough rings to get into the special stages, with not dying from the rom's gimmick. After the emeralds, this is barely any different from a regular Sonic 2 TAS.

It’s just inputs being picked for each frame being played back in an emulator. All that’s going on.
It's an acronym for Together As Speedrunners. Multiple players are going at once for an even quicker run. Go check out their Sonic Classic Heroes run, it's insane!

Its to loose the weight from the rings, without it you won't be able to jump into the zone.
Getting rings makes you fat in this game - but you still have to collect them to get the Emeralds, making this very challenging.
