You cant beat a pysical item to demonstrate something, most of us are visual learners, great work.
This is one of the best videos I've seen for new photogs. I have recommended this to video to those who are beginning. If your are new to photography, watch. You will not be sorry.

This video is very helpful because I also fell into the same wide-angle trap when I first started my photographic journey. More is not more! I discovered that bringing the subject closer in view reduced the distractions that I did not see in the wide angle. Even leading lines became stronger when I brought my focus closer.
I taught myself photography through a very select number of experts on RUclips, and you of course, were at the top of that list! So a huge “thank you” and I look forward to your next video!

Nigel, You are absolutely right about the importance of composition. I love film photography and watch a lot of film photographers on RUclips. It seems that most all of them just concentrate on the technical parts of photography such as type of film, focus, exposure, development, and scanning. Very little thought is put into the composition of the shot.
Great tips Nigel! Loved the model but not sure if it added much. Maybe come back to it and show it more carefully with better light? Still fun though!
Nice video Nigel! from these 3 'being attentive for the light' is for me my biggest working point, especially as I often take pictures during traveling when you don't have the luxury to stay for hours at one location without boring the family. Hence for me preparing the trip aforehand making sure we arrive at a scene in hopefully ideal circumstances is a must... and than of course fingers crossed for the sun and clouds to behave
Great video again😀👍🦜🌲🇫🇮🌏♥️!!! I think its good to take those wide photos when you start shooting. After some years you can crop them and Be Happy. Allso after years you get more experiens of your style and afterpost. Good way to start IS get 24-102 and shoot like grazy in all lenght If you have good conditions in weather. You can Never have too mutch shots, but those missing shots you can Never have Back.

Great tips Nigel which I will try to put into practice. I have a bad habit of shooting a subject (e.g castle or mountain) and not shooting the subject in a scene which then tells a story. Shooting the subject only says that I have visited that subject, if you follow my meaning!

Great tips! The light is so important. Make or break that photo!
This video describes what I was feeling. I really enjoy the 35 and 50mm lenses on my crop sensor camera, wich is about 56-80mm on a full frame in my case. Its much harder to get good compositions on wider angles.
I use an old peice of black mount card with a 7" x 5" hole cut out to help me with my composition of landscape shots. It may be an odd technique, but it allows me to make better decisions before taking the photos.
I used to do that. Also, I made 2 'L' shapes out of the same card that could be adjusted to give different views, square e.g.
In the old days some would use an empty slide holder to frame a scene.

@@davidgfisher It's a tool some find convenient some don't. It's more about having techniques that might help improve one's images.

Great stuff. For me, composition is by far the most challenging thing - that and walking for hours and hours! Learning the camera was like learning how to play chess. Learning composition is like learning to get great at chess. I like chess and photography :)

That is awesome! Made an actual model to demonstrate the shot. My mind went to turn out the lights and use litle lumecube lights with barn doors and snoots to show the light realtime. bravo great video!

So right about wide angle lenses. I remember I had a 10-20 on my old D90 that I struggled with because there was too much in the image - especially dead foreground and sky, which dominated out the image, or the perspective was all out of whack. So I barely used that lens and ended up selling it. Many years later, I've now got a 14-30, but maybe a bit less weight in the bag and a bit more desire to take it out and experiment

So… here’s a question for you I’m sure many of your subscribers have. Once you’ve set up your tripod, how many images do you find you have to capture in order to get that one you’re particularly pleased with while you’re at a site (not multiple visits but at the time you capture the image)? The impression from your awesome videos is one shot, one perfect image. I get asked this question time and again by folks just starting their journey who seem to think that they can only consider themselves “good photographers” when they don’t have to take multiple images to get the one they’re really after.
Try macro. Probably delete 50+ images to keep that one banger! 😂
Light is constantly changing, so what may be 'the image' for someone else may not be 'the image' for you. Brief, only YOU will know when you have captured 'the image', and that could be in one shot or many shots.!
Good video with some good examples but I'm not a fan of seeing the images on your iPad..not enough detail. Also as an old film landscape guy, I could crop to almost any size without losing detail but if I take a 24MP image and crop it to 1/4 of the size I get a 6MP image which might be fine for sharing on Facebook but I certainly am not going to print it above 4x6. Now with the image expansion software from Lightroom Classic, On1, and Topaz Gigapixel, I could start by doubling it in size to a 48MP image and the crop would be 12MP. Is my thinking correct?

Where’s a good place to ask photography questions? I’m a beginner with a Canon R8 and I’m photographing hair and while the camera makes the hair look absolutely beautiful, the color isn’t correct. I’ve tried a bunch of settings and trying to learn more, the best “fix” is to shoot in auto focus and press that color wheel at the bottom right of the screen and adjust the tone until its more accurate. Any ideas or websites to learn more? I don’t want to color correct, I just want accurate color right from the start so I can shoot and post the photos.
Just watched the first part about wider angle photos or zooming in. As a beginner photographer I’d think that with taking a wider scene would leave the option to crop the image later and gives more opportunities? If zoomed in you could never increase. Or is this a really stupid beginner mindset?

I'm old and started taking pictures long before digital was available to the masses 🤣 and when you bought any camera new or second hand, it only came with a 50mm lens, and under 70mm or 80mm everything was prime, as the optics just weren't good enough on small zooms, so most people only had a 28mm, 50mm and a 70-210 zoom, and if you were posh you had the 35mm and an 85mm prime so you were forced to make the most out of your shot and lens
Sidelight, backlight always seem to make the best shots.

I realized a long time ago that most photos I take end up looking much better if I crop them way in but I still make the same mistakes. I think it might be an overemphasis on wanting to provide context. For example, looking at the boat house at 5:02, since it is always suggested to avoid random elements from sticking into the sides of the frame, I would want to zoom out to include the tree trunks. I would likely then discover those trunks are too close to adjacent trunks, making me zoom out further until I was satisfied with the balance. Then when I look at the photo later I'm asking myself, What is this actually a photo of?? It's a mental trap that is so difficult to resist.

When it comes to wide angle, I think this video is a bit controversial. It amazes me how many new wide to super wide lenses have been introduced lately. Even for my Leica M, I now have a big choice of 24 and 21mm, and lower. Not supported by the viewfinder. Is this the influence of phone cameras?

I find your videos very interesting & helpful, but I think that you, like most other photo guys on you tube are forgetting one thing. A photo is a recording of the scene you are looking at. The artistic side is really important of course but for example, years down the track, the tree image gives no indication of where you were. It is vital in my opinion to record the whole scene in front of you, as well as closer images of particular features.
