The wait was worth it even if I got impatient and read the manga. It's too bad the episodes are regular length because the series won't be able to adapt the entire manga, it'll be more summarized. Overall though this was flipping awesome to see. I'm afraid of spirals again.
it's so incredibly well made. i'm in awe rn. i like that the stories are cascading within each other and presenting something new as prior people's stories' unravel(ravel?)
I don't mind mixing stories, but it felt like it goes too fast. The way it starts made me feel like there was an episode i hadn't watched,it didn't let the world breath, introduce the characters or build up any tension. Everything else was great,i just wish it was 40minutes or something.
I agree but going back to the manga it was kinda the same there. It's just one thing happens after another without any punches being pulled at any point. It just seems different now because we can't approach the story at our own pace
I think the 4 episodes might be somewhat intentional considering that in Japan the number 4 is seen as unlucky. Much like the number 13 is here in western countries. Just another layer of uncomfortability added to the spiral. I love the fast pace of the anime so far, if the whole thing is just 4 episodes then I'll be happy. All together it will be the same length as a theatrical movie, which will make it a great Halloween re-watch. This is gonna be a classic just like the Manga and be remembered by even non-anime fans for years to come. And if the anime watchers feel like they want more, the Manga is right there for them to read. I see it as a win win situation.
Every single person who made this deserves a standing ovation. It's phenomenal. From the detail of the art, to the weird pageturny framerate going on, it's the perfect blend of film and manga. Ito's work being so beautifully represented through an anime (it feels cursed to even call it that) really makes me second guess that punpun couldn't ever be animated. Bravo, team.
Nice review, and I'm loving that you're a fan of & mentioned the Twilight Zone!!! That is one of my All Time most FAVORITE shows! And yer right the art style of this anime, (which btw does it have a name yet?) and the vibe of his stories general really do have that Twilight Zone vibe for real, I agree. Appreciate your review. Also I loved the episode, it was perfect even better than the manga (which I'm rereading currently) in some small ways, and I can't wait for more! Seek the Spiral, Love the Spiral, BE THE SPIRAL!
As far as I know the anime is confirmed 4 eps which assumin based off the 1st R all typical ep length. As an anime only I enjoyed it a good bit. Some ppl complained some troubles in the pace & I kinda agree so far but it's not horrible or anythin imo. The director has an eye for doin very out there things in his work especially under restrictions. He did the infamous Aku no Hana adaptation which I enjoyed way more than I thought I would so I was excited for this & he seems to employ similar techniques like the high amount of rotoscope for the character actin. I'm likin it so far. This might become the "BEST" FULL horror anime since Higurashi or Shiki. Oh & the 1st good adaption of a junji ito work lol(I've only seen Gyo by Ufo). I'm excited for the rest
Aku no Hana é odiado pelo motivo que Uzumaki vai ser amado. Em Aku ele adaptou de fato o mangá. E isso ainda não liga nas nossas sinapses de anime bom é anime fiel ao mangá.
The fact you mentioned the Twilight Zone original series gets you a sub and a like from me.....I considerate the most important Sci fi show ever made! Favorite episode is Monsters Are Due on Maple Street
Great first episode. Yes, the mixing of the stories is a bit jarring, but we have to keep in mind that this episode is supposed to hook the viewer, so it is understandable that they decided to have 2 of the most iconic scenes from the manga. Maybe they could've added some more scenes to make the transition gel better, but I feel it's done agood job. 8/10
I know the main complaint people are having is the pacing, but it can't be discounted as a gripe. The whole reason Ito's stories work in Uzumaki is the lead in. There was literally zero character development. Also, the animation seemed kind of janky at times.
It looks so cool in black & white, I absolutely love that they did it like that. I just much prefer black & white, I read a few coloured manga recently and I didn’t like it at all.
I really enjoyed episode 1. Yeah, the episode was short, but if they keep adapting Ito stories, I'm good: the enigma of amigara fault, gyo, tomie - so many that would fit nicely as an episode or three with this same format.
I understand why the studio rushed through the story a bit, they have limited runtime due to how good the animation looks, some ppl wish the episode was 40 minutes long but if that was the case then we would have to wait 5 more years cuz that would be double the animation. I'm an anime only and I think is was an amazing adaptation. Tl;dr: it's fast cuz I would be 90 years old if it wasn't.
4 EPISODES?! How the hell did they spend 5 years on it for only 4 regular length episodes? I was really impressed with it when i watched the first one last night but holy shit
they have more frames per second than a regular so that is part of why this takes way more longer to make plus the production staff are relatively small.
@@j.2512 um no it’s all Warner bros/adult swim’s fault for putting a chokehold on the budget not adapting the whole source material…in other words I would stick with the manga
I don't know if there's an official reason why, but given that this isn't the first adaptation of Junji Ito's work and that most, if not all, of his previous adoptions were criticted for loosing some of the essence of his original Mangas when colorized, having this adaption made in its original black and white colors and tones just fits his vibe at lot better, in my opinion at least
This really surprised me with how entertaining episode 1 was. I honestly believe this series is starting off on the right path. Music sucks however. That is pretty weak sauce.

It will adapt the entire manga. They just adapt 4 chapters for each episode.
I'm hoping we get an extended cut in the blurays. I noticed a few cuts in some places that looked like a whole scene was missing.
@@Ofek. i mean it could be pretty rushed id hope it doesnt fall off id really want an army of one adaptation or hellstar remina

I still think Gyo is good for what it is. The other junji ito anime pales more in comparison compared to that.
For those who got sick of the blabbing, 2:30 is where the actual review starts.
Yep. First episode is quite good. Some moments gave me heebie-jeebies. Let's see how will it hold to manga
I like first episode. It's a bit rushed due to mixed stories in one episode but it fits. Anime will have just 4 episodes.
Thank god, the fact that the netflix junji ito series was all we had was terrible. That thing was atrocious, glad this is focusing on Uzumaki
The thing is I thought it will be 8 episodes. 4 episodes is too short imo
The fact you mentioned the Twilight Zone original series gets you a sub and a like from me.....I considerate the most important Sci fi show ever made!

Good start to the spooky season. Will check it out Ryan!
It was good. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but I didn’t have high hopes for it so it did pretty good so far.
I recomend anyone whos looking for more junji ito vibes play world of horror! It captures that atmosphere and art perfectly
Best Junji Ito adaptation
A little too perfectly. So perfectly the dev had to patch some of the "perfection" out of it. However, it is still great.

I really think throughout 4 episodes, the criticism is gonna be the pacing, but the quality is gonna be amazing art wise, music wise, animation wise.
It looks like the episodes get longer with each installment.
It's cool the guy who made Wicked City directed this series
That explains so much

Because junji ito is best in black and white.
I watch twilight zone. On reruns on analog tv
I think he is more like the H. P. Lovecraft of Japan.
