You are doing an amazing job!!! Thank you!!! I live in Urals, Russia and we can pretty rare have a contact with a native speaker. Your videos are a bit of fresh air for us all!!!
Hi, Miss Lucy, I love your videos! Here is my homework 😂😂
-G is a silent letter in 'Sign', although in 'Signature' it isn't
-O (after c) is a silent letter in 'Chocolate'
-B is a silent letter in 'Doubt'
What about O in coworker (o is not silent after c)
@@sabaunnisa2637 they were just clarifying which o in chocolate is silent - it's not a rule that o is silent after c or anything
You literally educate more than the teachers at school...
Truly said man...❤️
The school teacher has a plan according to the text book....they really teach well , other wise i wouldn't be able to learn English on my own...
Hey,I have a question..how do you say 'conceptually'?..in google the 'a' is pronounced..is this an exception then?
Yes I think so
It's due to the fact that in school
Notably in ancient british colonies
We do learn british English
However
We only learn it on a writing form
And the oral is normally okay
Not authentic as most of our teachers never went to uk and most of our English-speaking movie we watch is American
So at best it normally sounds like Australian English
Or generic English
In former british's colonies
Now some countries might follow some different rules
But in my country
We do learn british english
B climb
G sign
L Lincoln ( before the "n")
Gh Hugh
Your language is so soft and clearly able to hear and also I like your accent very much.
It's gorgeous, wonderful. Not have words to praise you and your accent.
I want to speak like you.
Really, you are a professional English speaker.
Hy your english so fluint. And way of your english teaching is awesome.
I think those people dislike your video who are jealous of your beauty..😍😂
I don't think so mate . There are a lot of beautiful women out there . They dislike it probably the lesson is not interesting or they don't understand the lesson at all .
I don't think so...........
Nay. Nope. No, I don't think so. Think positive/positively.
@@pacificoceania5828 I think it is because they don't understand the lesson at all.
Yeah.
Thank you for this lesson, because learning the rules of the pronunciation is more important than learning how to pronounce each word individually.
I'd just like to ask some questions. You said we shouldn't pronounce the "t" in "often" and the "h" in "white", in British English. However, I notice than the Americans pronounce the "t" in "often" and the Singaporeans pronounce the "h" in "white". Are those pronunciations correct?
I think it is. It'll differ from one country to another
Yeah, they can be pronounced. It depends on the accent. Just like the "r" is often silent in British English but pronounced in American English. Scottish English is especially conservative as Scotsmen even pronounce the "gh" that would be silent in any other version of English.
Thank you very much Lucy.
This helped me a lot. Tysm Lucy :)
Your The best English teacher in the world! I hope you keep making this Awesome Videos! Have a great day See ya! 👍
Thanks Lucy.
Wow! That was a hard one. Thanks Lucy.

Umm, I'm pretty sure I can hear the D in handsome, and I think also in sandwich. In fact, Wiktionary tells me it's optionally silent in sandwich, and curiously has IPA without and recordings with it for handsome.

Nice work I really like
Me: Have you forgotten an important example concerning the letter "b"?
You: I doubt it.
How about "normally"? Should i drop the 'a' sound or not?
both are correct
Lucy, i feel the need to admit that you're really fit and gorgeous all of the time even i would as far as to say that you have the perfect speech ever.
informative video.
But what is the reason behind or usefulness for having these silent letters which makes pronunciation so complicated.
Words like queen is pronounced a kw unlike Middle Eastern countries when using Q you have a U with it like you have sz in Eastern Europe language like in Poland . But saying that Q with no U is creeping into the English language like brand names like qooker pronouns cooker it’s a boiling water tap company. also there is Qettle pronounced kettle they also sell boiling water taps. We used to think Q with no U was impossible to use, but Q with no U is pronounced like a K or a C
You are cute and your way of teaching is awsome,,,, God bless you
What about "argument"?
You said that a letter D is normally silent if it comes BEFORE "n" and ''g'', but in words: sandwich and handsome the letter "d" comes AFTER letter "n". I am confused.
Not to mention she actually pronounced the D in all those words other than Wednesday. I'm confused why so many of her "silent" letters are still pronounced.
@@Avril.
I actually (with an "a") disagree with at least half of what she is teaching here. Her students will be speaking English in a very lazy way.
@@sirderam1 I totally agree with you, I stopped watching after I disagreed with her so many times that I couldn't make it through the entire video (I didn't even make it halfway). I like what she is trying to do, it just doesn't make any sense to me. (Edit for clarity)

Which is first Z or Zed?
Will we pronounce a in ally ?
You said we normally don't pronounce c before y so Lucy should be pronounced luy🤣😅
lmao🤣
Muscle "masl" = massol
Psychology: I think is complicated to claim radically if p is silent or voiced. I learned it was voiced. It is a difficult sound but not impossible. Pterodactyl: it's even though more complicated because it isn't a familiar word. You will never hear it if you aren't talking, ... on Pterodactylus. So maybe it's better to pronounce it.
Excellent :)

The same in Italian language
Haha yes, that takes some getting used to
Also french
Y la u, después de Q y la G seguida de una e o una i, como en guerra, guitarra, quitar, queso.

what is the diffrence between fake and false?
Exactly the same😅😅😅😅😅😅
Manuel Cruz - great question. Basically, fake means not real and false means not true. I recommend you to do an internet search of your question and you’ll find more details and examples. I used to work in document fraud and there’s a similar difference between “counterfeit” and “forged”. Counterfeit means a complete fake, e.g. money or an entire travel document. A forgery is when a photo is substituted, some words are altered, stamps are added or pages removed and the spine is sewn together again.

The N-word, that one is always silent, all of it
It amazes me that after what happened to Count Dankula, some still believe context doesn't matter, and that we should not be allowed to reference certain phrases or words no matter the context and the intentent...
By all means, the N-word is always forbidden to say. It's real prohibition over the world.

Moi, je trouve que l'accent d'environs Orleans est le plus simple de comprendre. Les paysans de Quebec, leurs quebecois est vachement difficile de comprendre, sauf que les gens sur la television parlent plus clairment.
Lucy, elle parle comme la reine de La France. Americains parlent plutot comme les Normans ou les Orleanais: un accent clair, plus simple, plus ancien.
I swear I can hear the silent D in 'handsome' and 'sandwich'
I came here to say exactly that. Maybe it's a soft D but it isn't silent.
Yeah. Same
If you check the phonetic writing below the words you’ll see that there is no D marked; the silent D you “hear” is due to the position of your tongue when you pronounce that specific N. If you notice, your tongue leans on your palate, almost in the same place where it leans when you pronounce the letter D 🤗

My goodness, this is a video everyone keen on English should watch. It is absolutely brilliant! I don't think anyone made such one ever before. Even the small, tiny things and rules are so very important in English. I admire you and I'm thanking you for sharing this with us and creating such a beautiful and helpful video. I've been learning English since January last year, already back then, with your videos. I'm just so glad that your channel exists and that you exist, taking the time to help people like me. Gnaw has a silent g.
Sachet has a silent t.
Abbatoir has a silent r.
Reign has a silent g.
Psalm has a silent p.
Wring has a silent w.
Thumb has a silent b.
Chalk has a silent l.

Through has a silent gh.
"Abbatoir" is French, hence the silent "r".

There are no silent letters in "smack". The "c" and "k" collectively make the ending sound.
Lucy had already gave the "thumb" and "through" examples. You would have known that had you watched the entire video.😊😊 Additionally, if you had watched the entire video, you would have known that "through" was given as a silent "g" example only.😊

Dear Lucy,
Thanks for the video, hope you're doing well.
Just a short comment on what you call a "longer vowel sound", it's actually a diphthong (so one vowel sound that glides slightly to another) like in "mate", "slide" or "hope".
English language has a lot of diphthongs causing difficulties to many foreign students.
The proper longer vowel sound though, it's a vowel sound pronounced in a slightly longer way like in "mood", "keen" or "naan";
and then there's a simple short vowel sound like in "bet", "risk" or "cut".
Have a lovely day!
Mika

English is a Crazy Language.
Here, in India, we call it a Funny Language.
Especially, with Silent letters.
My simple question is that Why to put that Silent Letter in the Word when we shouldn't pronounce it.?
Same word is pronounced differently if used in different Tense eg. The word *Read*
Same word is pronounced differently if it is used as a different Part of Speech eg. The word *Export* , pronounced differently if used as a Noun and differently if used as a Verb.
There are so many rules and many a times that rule is broken and called *Exception*
I need to learn Pronunciation of each and every word separately. I will go nuts one day ;-)
O God, Have Mercy on me.
parveen khan Many English words come from other languages and may retain the original spelling but the pronunciation changes, so that can make some letters silent. Some silent letters are used to change the sound of other letters to make different words (mat - mate, now - know) or help discern different words that sound the same (know - no). Also, before two or three hundred years ago there was no proscribed spellings for English words and people often stuck in extra letters; when the first dictionaries were compiled some of those extra letters became part of the "official" English language.
The whole world has contributed to it, but that makes English is a very difficult language. Even in English-speaking countries spelling and grammar are often taught throughout primary and secondary school - from age 5 or 6 until 16 or 18, and even so lots of people have problems with it.
Hindi is easier, till the matras come and crush your dreams
@@bob_._. good point!
Often it's not so much a case of putting a silent letter _in_ as of not removing a letter that _used_ to be pronounced; the pronunciation has changed, but the spelling as remained the same.
That's why english teachers have a job for life! There are hundreds of rules and I can't be bothered. I learn every word individually.
Your only problem is that you're incredibly beautiful ♥
😂😂
I always enjoy your lessons. They help me with the pronunciation a lot and I also learn plenty of new words. :-)
