The MTV analogy was accurate. MTV was the absolute king of youth culture and influence, it had a style and generation ….but it’s pretty much a shell today. TikTok is the king now with its own culture x influence and an entire generation, but if TikTok implodes today will that destroy the music business ? Especially when there are alternatives
If you were paying attention, you’ve seen this coming down the pike. I remember reading about their Oceania experiment, they’ve been preparing for this. I can see TikTok’s relationship with the music industry becoming increasingly adversarial as they become more of a threat to the status quo. Will we see a fully fledged TikTok record label grow into something that can compete for market share against UMG, Sony and Warner?
They’d have to buy catalogues of older music in order for that to be feasible. I do buy the idea of most music used in TikTok being the older, classic stuff
They'll forget about you songs in a couple of weeks because tik tok is designed to scroll threw shit so now people just scroll faster and want to new music every two weeks so your music will be forgotten.
There is no single artist who needs a record company to sell his/her music. There is no single music fan who needs record company to find good music. We are witnessing a very interesting period of time.
