Rhododendron Garden Tour 2022 | Flowers are Blooming at Kincaid's Nursery

- It's that time of year again! Rhododendrons are blooming and it's time for another garden tour. So far, spring of 2022 has been a great season for rhododendron blooms at our nursery. The late cold weather has pushed back some bloom times but the buds and flowers have not been damaged, and the extra rain we're getting is helping to hold onto the flowers for longer.

After watching your video, I finally planted the red rhododendron today so hoping it flourishes next year as well.
Awesome! Give it some time. It will take a few years to establish well. Mulch with a deep layer, fertilize with a slow release, acid loving fertilizer, and keep watered through the summer. It will be magnificent.
I just got a Firestorm red Rhododendron I live in Maine in the woods I planted it in full sun with evening shade. I added a bumper compost soil. Now I pray 🙏 😂
Sweet! Don't stop praying but you can do a lot to help yourself too, lol. Put down a 4 inch layer of mulch and spread it out a couple feet from the trunk. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer for acid loving plants. Then just water well at least once a week. That rhododendron will be the most fantastic plant in your yard in a few years.
I have a book from 1951.. on insects.. lace wings eat aphids.. so aphids may be your true insect drawing the lace wings into your garden plants.. birds eat lace wings (adults).. round larvae cocoons and and silk sacks are found for lace wings on the leaf tops.. from which lace wing adults emerge from.. cleaner bird feeder are oranges on branches or jelly works well.. but I believe your lace wings may possible be aphids.. suds dish soap I have heard does well for that.. hope this helps.. love the blooms..
Man every year when I watch these videos I'm jealous , rhododendron flowers is the best to me. Great collection Mike 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! Glad you can enjoy them through the video.
What a spectacular collection of rhododendrons! I’ve never seen yellow rhodies! I love your passion for these wonderful plants. The rhododendron forest pulls at my heart. As a kid living in Newhalem, Washington, there was a gardener who kept beautiful gardens around town full of purple and lavender and pink rhododendrons and they were a magical place to play and hide out under and imagine adventures. My understanding is that the town is being deconstructed and allowing the natural plants to take over. So much has been destroyed to allow the land to recover. It’s heartbreaking to think of all those lovely gardens torn up. Thank you thank you for sharing this beautiful garden. I could just watch this for hours.
So glad you enjoyed it Michelle! I haven’t heard of that town but will have to look it up.
❤❤❤ Such a beautiful collection of rhododendrons
It's been a labor of love for almost 17 years now.
@@MikeKincaid79 wow! I wish I could have started a long time ago. I had just started gardening about 3 years ago during pandemic. So my English Garden is still a baby.
@@MikeKincaid79 thank you for your great videos and inspiring a lot of gardeners like me. Looking forward to more amazing videos from you. Btw congratulations on the new house . Are you in Redwood CA?
You are the only person on you tube who got me hocked and falling in loooove with this flowers!!!absolutely an amazing efforts and work to reach this gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous out come !! Flowers made with love
I appreciate your comment so much, Sandy! It's been a labor of love for 16 years now and it just keeps getting better every year. Thanks for coming along on the journey. Happy gardening!
I just love your vlogs......👍🏻😍😍👌
Thanks so much for saying so!
Me and you would be the best of friendS mann! Your love and passion for the select specimens of Rhoddies and plants in general is just like myself. I seek out the rare and unusual color varieties and taking road trips to find them is what makes it so much fun! I admire everything you do in the garden! Cheers mate! Salute from CT! That "starlight champagne" is ridiculous!! xD
Isn’t she a beauty!
Thank you for taking time to share your joy and information. I enjoyed this immensely. I am adding more Rhodes to my collection in 6a and am grateful for your descriptions!
You're very welcome, Jessica. I plan to do many more tours of my rhododendrons this year. I think I'll do them more frequently through the bloom season and talk about the varieties as I go.
Absolutely gorgeous😍💚👍
Thank you! 😊
I'm so exited about your garden opening up to the public one day! I want to fly all the way to Washington when I'm old enough and look at all your rhododendrons in real life. Thank you for making awesome videos.
You’ll be more than welcome here when the time comes.
Is your place open for the public now?
Could have watched all day .Absolutely stunning, a majesty of beauty, my jaw dropped more than once ,and your knowledge of all these amazing plants is second to none . Great video, cant wait for the next one . Thankyou from uk

The podophyllum is gorgeous. It reminds me of the mayapples in our PA woods.
We don't have mayapples here so I had to look it up, but yes, these look almost identical. Thanks for sharing that!
That brought me memories of my Aunt. She had a couple of rhododendrons in her front yard. They were huge and beautiful. The people who bought her house now took them out. Now it's just grass all the beautiful plantings are gone.
That’s a bummer when that happens. They are such beautiful landscape plants.
I love your passion for flowers! I have learned a lot about propagating plants from you and am having so much fun!!
That’s so awesome to hear, Tammy!
Omg i was literally thinking about you and the rododendron video. Then I searched your channel and IT WAS THERE! You made my week!☺️✌🏼😁
Hello I like you passion for these flowers and what you are doing is contagious
I'm so jealous!
Lol
Wow! Those are all so lovely! I have two in front of my house. I lovingly call them rhododen-trees because they are just that: trees! Also, I keep adding onto my list of nurseries to check out in the area because of your videos. Thank you for your hard work. I love tuning into your videos.
Thanks so much for your support and enjoy your spring, Kristin!
I can watch the beauty rhody all day and my fav is R. Taurus.
Yes, that is a beautiful one. All done blooming now but Taurus sure is a warm welcome after a long winter.
Wow , took my breath away.. what a wonderful garden.👌💕

@@MikeKincaid79 I wish I could get it...I'm in love with rhododendrons.
My ever first rhododendron was transplanted that self seeded in the trunk of a nz Punga Fern! I was about 8 at the time when I discovered it.. 16 years later and it’s still growing gorgeously in my mothers garden with bubblegum pink flowers.. not sure the specifics.. unfortunately a few years back we had to cut half of the plant as one side just died off mysteriously 💔.. but it’s grown a lot on that side since and still is a decent shrub/tree 🙌🏼 just started to propagate rhododendrons because of your Channel!
They grow crazy here in nz 🇳🇿 Absolutely admire seeing vintage 20-30ft giant rhododendron shrubs along the country side on old farm properties.. can’t wait to discover more like in your video! 😍🇳🇿 Keep up the fantastic work 🪴💚
Neat story. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant Mr K. Thanks mate. Awesome 👍 Joe 👍
It’d be so nice to have wedding pictures taken in front of many of those flowers!
Its attractive and amazing colors of your Rhododendrons.
Thanks!
Your rhodie collection is amazing Mike. I'm taking notes in case my new place has space to plant some.
I remember the very first time I saw a Loderi King George and it has been a dream to have one. The Crystal Springs Rhodendron garden here in Portland had one that has been pruned well and the bark and flowers are so gorgeous. Those huge fragrant blooms were such a surprise. How could I not fall in love. A neighbor had a tall lanky yellow bloomer that died from neglect. The flowers were a soft yellow and they died gracefully, no browning. Still sad I didn't grab a cutting when I could.
I plan to take many more cuttings of my Loderi King George. They are such a beautiful rhododendron. If you can’t find one, I’ll have some ready in a couple years.
So lovely Mike. You've got the Rhody Magic touch. 🌸
Woah, Horizon Monarch is stunning! Its blooms remind me of alstroemeria.
It's a truly magnificent variety from start to finish.
Amazing video, you have a fantastic and beautiful colourful flowers on plants in your beautiful yard and wood wow !!
That lovely cat is it yours ? Good work, Mike !😁😁👋👋🌺🌺🌿🌿
Gonna go out today and buy a rhodie. I used to have several in one of my previous homes but none at my current one. Thanks for the tour!!!
Have fun plant hunting!
Woo hooo…. Been waiting for this video Mike!!!! Thanks 😀
No problem, much more to come.
I loved I!, thank you 😊
Long video but it's great to see what a beautiful garden
These are fantastic. I've just started a collection for my garden here in Scotland UK. Never tried my hand at propagation but I might have to give it a go.
Oh you’ll love it!
Hi Gillian. You must visit Benmore Botanic Garden for amazing species of rhododendrons and azaleas. And if you looking for specialist scottish nursery, I can recommend Glendoick :) Saying 'hi' from Glasgow !
@@My_slow_story hi from Lanarkshire Thanks yes Benmore botanical gardens are on my wish list of places to visit. I'll will also look up the nursery.
😆 at 2:15 you got a clematis in your hand like saying to you "what you up to? Those are my flowers" lol I keep laughing..
LOL
My passion for figs is backing off, I wanted to have about five acres of them, now I will be happy with 3/4 of an acre for my pleasure. I'm sure I will sell plants too at some point. I really like unusual fruits and flowers.
I don’t blame you. It’s easy to get carried away. I often think that when I get older and the kids are gone I may want to settle down to something smaller with fewer varieties of plants. I pretty much know which figs and rhodies I’d cut back to but then as I think more and more, the list starts growing and I realize that I’m no where near close enough to think like that yet, lol. I continue to create an insane amount of work for myself but just can’t help it!

Absolutely beautiful beautiful, thank you for sharing.
You’re so welcome! Thanks for hanging out on the channel today.
Heaven!! A great alternate for orange rhodies is Gibraltar azaleas. I think I have found my acreage finally. If everything works out, it's 4.5 acres about 3 minutes from me! I'm so excited! I'm going to line my fence line with rhododendrons and cherry and crabapple trees, now that I see yours. 💜🧡💛❤️💚
Sounds great! Good luck. I hope you get the place.
All so beautiful

Haha, it's a struggle.
It is really a nice rhododendron garden. Thank you! I love rhododendron but I live in zone 3.
Ooooh, that’s cold.
Wow Wow WOW
HIi, I live in zone 3 and recently I bought rhododendrone Rosy LIghts and White Lights. The Northern LIghts series varieties are the most cold hardy and grow max 4 f. I would like to plant them as close as possible so that whit and pinky blooms would blend, intermix, to give an impression of one big bush with white and rosy flowers. Have you seen something similar in your practice? Do you thnk it is a good idea? Thank you.
Hi Mike, these are absolutely stunning!!!
I want some whites, yellows, oranges, peaches, etc.
Please feel free to send them across the pond to the UK.
If not, some cuttings will suffice!!
Magnificent flowering, very healthy and vigorous plants.
Congratulations also for this video full of information.
I love rhododendrons, in my country there are some places where rhododendrons offer their show to visitors.
The Conca Dei Rododendri in Biella (Oasi Zegna), the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore, the Nature Reserve of the Burcina Felice Piacenza Park.
Thanks Mike!
Greetings from Italy.

Sounds wonderful! I'd love to visit those places you mentioned. I love plants from all over the world. When I was in the Navy, back in 1998, I spent 6 months in Aviano. It was an absolutely beautiful part of the world and I enjoyed my stay so much. While I was there, we traveled around northern Italy and I was able to see Venice a few times and Verona, as well as many other small towns. Even got a picture of my laying in Juliette's coffin when no one was looking. I missed out on Pisa but someday I vow to return. Anyway, thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the blooms.
Mike, what can I do with the flowers of the Hortensias when they start dying? Thanks for your help. (Can I cut them or leave them on the plant). From N Carolina)
hello...where can we order them or are you planning on selling clipping? the colors are amazing I can't wait to plant some in my flowerbeds. How will I trim them ?
Wow--your garden is gorgeous! Amazing tour!
Thank you! I was actually thinking about you and showing my mom your channel. I’m visiting her right now in Phoenix and told her that you live somewhere around here and grow all kinds of fig trees in your back yard. She is planning to fill her pool in with dirt so I was giving her ideas.
lookin blessed up! and hey woah look at those green giants! don't be afraid to throw those in the next update...those have gotten big since we last saw them. oh jah!
The next video is for you!
Hey Mike great job. What is the purpose of the tree laydowns in some of the beds?
2 reasons. First, I really like the look. Second, they are called nurse logs. They absorb a ton of water in the rainy season and give it back when it’s hot. Also, they break down over time, providing nutrients to the rhododendrons and habitats for all the flora and fauna.
💚💚💚I lived in Humboldt County a couple years and my favorite part were the wild rhodys and azaleas that grow under the redwood canopy...😍
Your garden is reminding me of some lovely long hikes deep in the forest.
I'm working on a tiny stem of the buttercream color variety...💚
My family and I just went on a road trip that went through the avenue of the giants. It was a 2 week road trip and that was one of the most amazing parts of it.
beautiful
i like flowers so much, pink and white red 😍 but i'm in tx so hot flowers can't stand it but i also have to have flowers in the garden like rose...The bush is the cat's house
Awesome Mike. Great tour! I’ve been following your channel the last year. I just bought a house with a red rhoadie (haven’t identified it yet) that I will definitely try the rooting the way you teach. My figs and forsythia are rooting great! You are an inspiration.
It’s early in the season. Give it another try
I LOVED the tour!!
But am so exhausted at this point...as a gardiner... because I can't look at a garden without subconsciously calculating all the work to get it to there! Guess I should save this video in my "Watch later" & view it every night before bed to keep away any suggestion of insomnia!
Lol
I always get hopeful when they name one “Alaska” or “Denali”, and I think I can grow one up here in Alaska.
Alas, PJM is the only one I’ve seen alive for more than 2 seasons.
I dig some of the ferns growing among your Rhodies. They look awesome together. I sure do dig all you’re sharing with us, brother. Thank you, Mike.
No problem, glad you’re enjoying the videos. Rhododendrons in Alaska sounds like a tough proposition. Glad PJM is working out.
Hey Mike, i recently discovered your channel, and was hoping you could help guide me a bit. I have been trying to grow cherry blossoms from cuttings, with no success for a while now.
I've been getting harwood cuttings from nearby trees, scraping some of the bark off, dipping them in 0.4 buteric acid, and sticking them in wet pots (already tested soil ph content), but they just wont grow.
Is my rooting gel too weak?
I saw another video of yours where you suggested using dip-n-grow for hardwood, if so- what kind of concentration should i be using?
Would love any help.
Thanks in advanced
The instructions that come with the Dip-n-grow tell the concentration to use for hardwood cuttings. Use the cup supplied and mix as per the instructions. Use an inert material for rooting instead of potting soil. Bottom heat can be helpful.
@@MikeKincaid79 hey man, thanks a lot

Wow, beautiful garden! All the things I tried to propogate last year, died! BUT, all but 2 of the clearance plants I purchased and planted came back this year so I feel like a real gardener now! Awww, hello kitty kitty psspsspss
Never give up!
@@MikeKincaid79 So, you said this last year when I was feeling defeated and I'm back this year to say that your little bit of encouragement was instrumental in helping to pull myself out of my "just quit" funk and reset my thinking. I'm trying again this year!!! Thank you.
We’ll at least I’m consistent 😂
Hi Mike!I hope you will talk about Rhodo pruning later. I don't know how to control the size while I still have flowers next year. Thank you!
I do have a video about that from last spring.
@@MikeKincaid79 Found it!Thank you!
Went to your Instagram bc of Honey Butter and Big Sam x Lem's Cameo! 😍 Had to watch 3x in order to write down all the names and colors. 🤦🏻♀️
That "Chinese Groundcover" looks a lot like a smaller version of May|Hog Apple that we have every May in the South... They get small white flowers under the huge leaves. Then they die back until next May.
Those 2 rhododendrons are fantastic! You'd definitely be happy with them.
love the time and enthusiasm you put into your videos. Do you have a video on pruning rhododendrons? time of year, your Teknik's etc.
same pruning Teknik's for hydrangea or azalea?
I made a video about it last year but I can make another. I’ll be pruning more rhododendrons soon.
What an incredible collection! Thank you for sharing. Is the soil in your area more acidic, or are you amending these beds?
Thanks! We love our rhododendrons, and they're just starting to bloom again! I've never actually tested the soil but I would venture to guess it's more acidic due to all the fir trees and needles that have fallen over the years. I just continue to mulch over the beds with fir bark, don't add amendments other than fertilizer every other year just to top things off. The act of mulching and not tilling will actually promote fungal growth through the beds, which promotes a more acidic soil.
Hi Mike, I have a question. What is that beautiful slim tree with the thin beaches full of small peach flowers behind your Rhododendrons at the 16:38 point of your video? It is beautiful as are your Rhododendron collection.
It’s a pink dogwood. The variety is Cherokee Brave.
Thanks!
Love the walkthrough Mike and would love to see it in person one day! I get my big rhodie garden fix at Meerkerk garden up here on Whidbey. Looks stunning this time of year.
I still need to make it to that one. Definitely on the bucket list.
greetings- Yeah, prefect ~ 🖖
Mike .. were you affected by that heat wave last summer? I have a part sun part shade to full shade yard up in poulsbo. But where the sun sneaked through during that 100°+ week last year a handful of my rhodys burnt to a crisp. Also, do you put any shade over your hoop house?
Yep, a few of my rhododendrons had burnt leaves after that heat wave. That was terrible. Hope to not see that again this summer. I don’t put extra shade on my hoop house. The plastic is white and blocks about 50% of the light.
Hi Mike! I love your videos and how organic, fun, and engaging you are. We moved to Charlotte, NC, from Denver, Colorado, recently. We have a newbuilt house, and I learn about plants, growing, and taking care of them. I wonder if I can propagate Cape Mirttle Tree, these trees are common in Carolinas.
I’m sure it’s possible but I just don’t know enough about them since they’re not common here.

Wow - what beautiful plants! I need to add some to my landscape. Curious where others source or buy theirs from?
Just been scouring specialty nurseries for over 15 years.
Hello Mike! What a gorgeous rhodie collection you have! If I may ask, where is your garden? I have three mature rhodies and they do perform but not as well as yours. Could you please provide some tips to make them thrive. I garden in the SF Bay Area zone 9. Thanks much!
Hey, I just passed through the bay area on a road trip with my family about 2 weeks ago. I know they grow tons of rhododendrons in the Mendocino coast area. I think it's a little warmer where you're at. The best thing you can do for rhododendrons is to mulch really well with a deep layer of good draining mulch and then water through the summer. The roots are fine and hair like and they stay close to the surface. They like to grow into loose airy organic mulch. Put down 4 to 6 inches of mulch around the base of your rhododendrons, maybe 2 or 3 feet out from the trunk. That will keep the roots cool and moist and give them more food to grow into. Keeping the soil moist (not wet) is important for rhododendrons. Good luck and have fun!
Hey mike, your garden is looking nice. I am lucky that the lace wings have not found my yard yet.
Have you tried attracting parasitic wasps to manage the lace bugs? They eat bugs, nectar and pollen; so it is a matter of planting companion ornamentals to supplement their diet. They don't really help against leaf-roller aphids, but they will patrol your yard all day in search of bugs to eat. They seem to be especially interested in members of the Aster family. Calendula, cosmos, and sunflower seem to really bring them in. Calendula Winters over in our yard, and drops plenty of seeds that germinate naturally. During the Summer, you will never see sedum succulent flowers without some kind of bee working them. A broken sedum will root on a gravel driveway, so they are easy to propagate. Many varieties of dahlia are also good for the wild bees, but slugs also love them.
Have you considered breeding any of your rhododendrons? You certainly have a good variety to choose from. They do not appear to be difficult to germinate or grow as seedlings. You could do planned crosses, open pollination, or both. The seeds are very tiny and abundant, so you could probably germinate ~10,000 seeds in a dozen seedling trays. If you cull ruthlessly, you could reduce that to 48-72 per tray by the end of the first season. I may try one or two trays this Fall/Winter, but none of my varieties are very special. I have 'Dreamland', 'Purple Passion', 'Taurus', 'Nova Zembla', and 'Jean Marie de Montague'.
I love Dreamland when it gets some size on it. Yes, I’ve considered many different crosses here. I love the Loderi King George for size and fragrance and would love to cross it to get a similar performing plant but with yellow or orange hues in the blooms. That would be a show stopper. Over the past couple years I’ve been really checking out dahlias. Even bought a video about them from the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden. I plan to get into them eventually when I get more of my landscape infrastructure buttoned down.
Hi Mike, Greetings from Nottingham UK. I’ve always like rhododendrons since I was a child. The university here has them as a hedgerow and that’s what I remember always being there. I will have to send you a picture of them. Anyway, took delivery of my first ever plants today, a variety called grumpy and one called Catherine Alcock (I think) and looking forward to taking cuttings possibly next year. Interesting the amount of varieties you have do not seem to be available here but never mind, variety is the spice of life. Btw my sister lives near Vancouver WA and there are loads of rhododendrons there also.
Yes, Vancouver is just below my area and in the same zone. They can grow every variety I have here. Good luck with your cuttings and have fun with it.
Hi, I've been binge-watching a lot of your videos but have not figured out how you manage to mitigate or control diseases like powdery mildew. I'm in the process of setting up a small orchard of 12 Trees on our 5 acre farm. Assuming I can manage 12 Trees we're looking to plant a couple acres... But I'm seeing powdery mildew and aphids and other issues on these new trees. I would rather not give them a systemic fungicide and insecticide, but being as though this is the first year and we're just trying to establish them I'm thinking that might be my best option. But in a few years when we start getting fruit I'm not going to want to use chemicals! If you have a video covering this can you point me to it? If not I think this would be a really good topic to talk about
Perhaps you can buy some beneficial insects like lady bugs. I have heard that if you control ants that bugs that eat aphid will win out. Ants protect aphids because aphid produce nectar that ants eat. Ants are like their body guards.
There is a lot of info on RUclips about increasing brix. If the brix are high, bugs loose interest. A lot of info about increasing brix on trees is about building up soil and bacteria. They also say increasing calcium in the trees increases the brix.
Beautiful garden, man. Love your videos, find them extremely helpful. I'd love see what you do as far as ants, fungus gnats, aphids, powdery mildew fungus, ect inside the greenhouse. Can't use many chemicals because my chickens are so close to my greenhouse.
Actually, I do nothing for any of those outdoors. I let everything happen naturally and have had no real problems. Of course there’s an occasional rhododendron that gets root rot and I’ll occasionally see aphids on a plant or 2 but there are so many different predator bugs and birds outdoors that everything stays in check. When you start using chemicals to destroy a certain bug, it starts collapsing the little ecosystem in your immediate area and every other part suffers. So to answer your question, I go mostly all natural.
Thanks Mike for the input. Wish you and your folks all the best
i don't know how ya did it and how ya keep up with it mike, it's an amazing garden. electric blue-wow. i really like the Chinese ground cover. -- how do you remember all of their names, I'll never know. sometimes I don't even know what day it is. don't you have a rhodie from tibet? cp.
I'm not sure how all the names stick with me but I love collecting them so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
Do these rhododendron like full sun. I have one that gets a lot of shade. It blooms but never seems to get big like these. I am also in zone 7a.
They do best with some shade, especially in the hot afternoon sun. Size depends on variety, fertilizer, watering, and pruning.
Hi Mike love your Rhodies and you have so many and you know all of their names, love to see the rest when the flowers open up.
I have 2 but can't remember the names and have some very tall Azaleas, one orange, some pink and some white with a darker throat.
Carol from the UK
Glad you enjoy this Carol. I don’t know what it is but I’m just obsessed with this plant and the names just stick with me.
That's great Mike what are you going to do with all the others in the hoop house? Carol
Very beautiful!!!! Do you have troubling with deers encounters? They keeps keep eating my flowers :/ heartbreaking 💔
The deer around here don't touch the rhododendrons. Every part of the rhododendron is poisonous. For some reason, I get a lot of people on the east coast telling me that the deer eat their rhododendrons. Not sure what the difference is over there but the plants are poisonous and can be deadly (my mother in law's goats ate a few of her rhododendrons and then died within a week). I can only assume that deer over there are laying around dying in the woods or they have iron guts, lol.
@@MikeKincaid79 that was an awesomely informative info! I wouldn’t know anything about this species plants that have poisonous. Thank you @Mike and again! Your garden is absolutely gorgeous beautifully
hay Mike, I could listen to you all day, you are such an inspiration for us rhododendron lovers. I wish I had such a big estate like you so I can plant so many but unfortunately not. Rhododendrons and azaleas are my favorite plants, azaleas I propagate from the seeds of a rhododendrone I am trying to propagate in your way but I am not very successful. Greetings from Croatia. Go on
Wow, so cool to hear from a fellow rhododendron lover from around the world. Don’t ever give up on your dreams!
@@MikeKincaid79 I will certainly not give up, it is a challenge and a great love Thanks to you I will be even more persistent, I wonder why you do not have a single deciduous azalea on your property?
I actually have 2 of them. I don’t plant more because the deer go after them.
Where in the United States do plants survive?
I live in the state of Minnesota where the temperature drops to 20 below zero.
Do you think they can survive here?
Some varieties, like Nova Zembla, can take -25.
I'm down on the lower SW corner of Kentucky, which is considered 7a. Would I be safe for zone 7 plants? We'd had a few ice storms over the years, just don't want to plant a pile and have them die back to the ground, or totally.
45 min north of us is 6b, which is why I ask. If I was deeper into USDA rating I would not worry as much.
Some rhododendrons will survive colder temps like you get in 7a. Look up "ironclad rhododendrons" and you will find older varieties that do well in colder regions. They also tend to grow better and are more long lived than many of the newer hybrids. They are some of my favorites!
Mike, they are beautiful! I live in Georgia in zone 8a do you think i could raise Rhododendrons? Do you sell cuttings or rooted plants?
Thanks Marilyn! I’m not as familiar to your climate but you’re in a good zone for growing many of them. I do know that azalea grow well in Georgia and many people grow them there. I don’t currently sell rhododendron cuttings but plan to eventually sell rooted rhododendrons.
Mike...sound your site a day or so ago. While rhododendron grow in Houston, Tx?
I’m not sure as I’m unfamiliar with the weather there but if rhododendrons don’t do as well, you can always check out there close cousins, azaleas. They seem to do well in hotter climates.
