When you lie about the value of a piece of real estate to make it appear MORE valuable, you get a lower interest rate, which means the lender is not getting a fair interest value on that loan. High value assessments = low interest rates = STEALING huge sums from lender. Not complicated.
Literally everyone in realestate appraises their property higher, its absurd to think otherwise.

But it's my understanding that the ruling is based on a finding of consistent, systemic fraud. In other words, there never WAS a "business"; it was always just a con--an elaborate shell game.
I think there are always victims when grifting occurs. Not just the direct targets of the con, but everyone else pays a price, too: those who are involved in legitimate businesses in the same industry, for example; investors; taxpayers--i.e., us. In the end, we're always the ones holding the bag.
If I recall correctly, the judge himself said there was a need to protect the integrity of the financial system, or it would gradually lose trust and our system would start to unravel. Trump made money by breaking the rules that everyone else was following. If they ALL start to break the rules--we have a repeat of 2007-2008.
he rules are there for a reason, and those who break the rules must be held accountable--because not everyone has integrity. Some people have to be constrained into doing the right thing.
(Incidentally, I would have liked to have seen every last one of those Wall Street bankers who collapsed the economy and cost us BILLIONS sentenced to 20 years minimum in a Federal penitentiary.)

That's not the way NATO works. Each country agrees to put a certain amount of their own money into their own military for readiness - it's a hedge against aggression from such countries as Russia. Then, if a NATO country needs help/defense, the resources are already in place. Trump made up his riffabout NATO not paying their bills just like he does every time he opens that little mouth of his. He probably can't name the countries in NATO nor can he define with any clarity who and how NATO was formed, how it has changed and what its value is. He doesn't care, either. Trump doesn't want to help anyone - often not even those who are helping him.

- The fact that every developer inflates the value of the collateral they put up
- The fact that the lender is required to do their own due diligence when lending money
- The fact that the lender is not the one pressing charges
- The fact that they are literally falsifying information by valuing his assets at an unprecedented low amount

I still wonder why, when Trump claimed that Mar-A-Lago was worth far more than the figure the court used, the county assessor did not immediately increase the taxes on the property, especially considering that an earlier, higher assessment was challenged by Trump's lawyers. Trump has stated that the $18 million figure used in the case was decided by Judge Engoron. But it was the assessment Trump's lawyers argued for in their challenge to the previous assessment. And that was nowhere near the one to one and a half billion dollars Trump publicly stated it may be worth.
Since when can you just state the value of your property and the bank will take your word for it, without verifying? Doesn't make sense to me. Mames me think this is going to be overturned. Am I missing something?
@@weldmin4818 Yes, you're missing two things. First, these are much more complicated properties than the ones your or I own. If your bank wants to know how much your house is worth, they can look at how other similar houses in your area sold for recently. If Donald Trump's bank wants to work out how much Mar-a-Lago is worth, there aren't any similar Mar-a-Lagoes in the area that have recently been sold. Second, there are strong incentives to give truthful valuations because, if you're caught lying, you might end up getting fined more than a third of a billion dollars.
