A walk round Capital Radio on New Year's Eve 1990

  • NYE 1990, and it was my job to play out the party mix tapes (4x1 hour) on Capital FM London between 10pm-2am. Knowing how boring this was going to be, I borrowed a video camera so that I could film around the building, because... well, I can't remember now. But I'm glad I did, because this footage has become something of a time capsule.
26 years later, much has changed. Everything you can see is long gone, gutted and redeveloped after Capital moved out in 1997. Radio studios are now entirely computerised; Capital in 1990 was just introducing digital systems into its studios, and was one of the first radio stations in the UK to do so.
In 2016, Capital is no longer the most popular music station in London. But in 1990, it really was the hot rockin' place to be.

Use to love Capital Radio (Capital FM as it later became known) back in the day. Listened to it during the mid to late 1980s when I was at school So this video is gold getting a rare glimpse behind the tinted mirrored glass of the Euston Tower where all that music and those great DJ personalities, we would hear on the radio, emanated from. Seeing those wonderful studios where it all took place. Boasting the likes of DJs Graham Dean, John Sachs, Christ Tarrant and Pat Sharp (& his mullet). The canteen where they would sit, drink and eat. The rooms where they would congregate and have chats, The toilets where they would shit and piss in. What an honour.

I remember visiting Euston Tower when I was younger and I was overwhelmed! Graham Dene, Mike Smith, Tarrant, Michael Aspel, Sachs. All lived in my Sussex home. :)

I really enjoyed that. Studios with presenters in them! Now you have some empty studios with playout software doing the work. You can't beat the gold old days of radio.

What a gem that video is I always wondered what the place looked like when you went up them spiral stairs. I can remember going there when I was a kid to have a look round there weren't much to see hoping I might bump into someone famous. What kid would do that today.

Takes me back to the old days. My first radio gig started back in ‘87 in Pittsburgh, PA USA. Wow have studios changed. I was 15 and hadn’t the sense to be scared shitless the first time I potted up the mic. I miss that fearlessness. Of course now I am getting to the age when I am to old to give a shit. Which is a type of fearlessness to be sure.
    Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for sharing. I've add this to a playlist of studio tours on my channel. I properly geek on these types of videos. Lord know why, as I work in radio anyway. Maybe it's the flashy lights!

When they used to say "Broadcasting from the top of the Euston Tower" I had always assumed that the studio was on the top floor. Not first floor as it appeared to be in this video.

Yeah, that was a bit of artistic licence! Capital only had the ground and first floors.

Dr Fox was great. It’s tragic the way his career was pulled from under him.

Between 30th December 1989 and 1st January 1990, Capital Radio, and a lot of other independent radio stations like BRMB in Birmingham, broadcast a special Top 500 of the 1980s countdown which took 3 days to play. Can anyone remember this? Or does anyone have any recordings of it? I've got a few cassette tapes featuring some of the countdown but I'd like to hear more of it if possible. Thanks in advance.

Didn't realise Euston Road was the rabbit warren that it appears to be here. I bet Leicester square has a "no mess" rule.

I gradually stopped listening to Capital in the early-mid 2000's when it turned into an almost exclusive R&B/Hip Hop station. It's not their fault as this is just what's in the charts today but I suspect it played a role in Tarrant's decision to call it a night. You can listen to the charts for an hour or two these days and you'll be lucky if you can remember more than 2 songs. There's just no variety/diversity in the music. It's the same with all the stations that play the chart stuff e.g. Heat, Heart, Radio One etc. The departure of Tarrant was the last nail in the coffin for those of us who grew up listening to the station during the 80's and 90's.
It's a little sad how so much has changed. I remember Chris Moyles's late night show in the mid 90's which was great as he'd troll people by prank calling them. It was just adding a little variety. He eventually got kicked out and ended up at Radio One lol. Those were good days. If I listen to the radio these days it's usually Magic, Kerrang or one of the local stations wherever I happen to be.

No, it's the Euston Tower. Capital didn't move to Leicester Square until 1997.
