Some basic knowledge of grammar and sentence framing is compulsory apart from regular practice in order to speak English , but if we don't have proper knowledge of grammar, we'll be committing mistakes every now and then.

The speaker is sure he was not rich, he was just pretending to be rich) Whereas He walked as if he had been rich.( The speaker is not sure he was rich or not. I think the correct sentence would be ,You look as though you did not take food for years. Using past subjunctive mood.
