  • Tesla's Model 3's heating & cooling system is controlled by a single hub, the Superbottle. This innovate design is miles ahead of the competition, and shows the disruptive nature of Tesla's vertically integrated manufacturing approach. Is this tiny little super hero easter egg a clue at a major future Tesla product line? A smart home AC system? Let me know what you think in the comments!

You missed an important impact on energy efficiency. Separated systems have to dump heat or add heat as the cabin, battery, motor, or electronics need. Superbottle allows waste heat from any of those sources to be delivered to any of the other components. This 'heat re-use' improves energy consumption.

Tesla generates heat during winter by wasting energy in the inverter. They could (maybe the already are) max out clock cycles in the drive computer to generate bitcoin as a form of waste heat that does double duty. It adds waste heat to warm the batteries and it generates bitcoin which Tesla could sell (just a thought).

You didnt really mention what exactly is special about the super bottle (except its name and cool logo), everything in a car except the cabin needs to be cooled in general, which is done by a heat exchanger/radiator, and in an electric vehicle there are just more things that have to be cooled and can be combined into one cooling system which makes sense, i wouldnt consider this special.

As for in the home use, Tesla would need to connect heat producers to heat demand, say like connect your fridge and water cooled PC to your liquid floor heating and shower water.

As far as home HVAC goes, a Mitsubishi multizone mini split is essentially what you're describing at the end of the video. 20 years ago, the datacenter at the university I was studying at had heat exchangers in all the rooms that were supplied with either hot and cold water or water at the correct temperature. They had a pretty massive thermal management room somewhere that was basically coordinating heating and cooling. At least one of the computers they had was water cooled and was supplying heat to the building in winter.
So, I think what they did was integrate the whole thing, but the concept doesn't seem all that new...

These are becoming increasingly used in the HVAC industry because it functions exactly how you described. You can literally pump heat from one room to another. I did an installation recently that has a bakery adjacent to a floral shop with a multi head VRF system. I am literally heating the occupied space of the floral shop by cooling the oven room of the bakery. Interested in what Tesla has in mind, but the technology exists currently from a number of manufactures such as Daikin and Mitsubishi.

Very Interesting! I would think that the super-bottle could be used for smart home heating and cooling by using the thermal deltas inside and outside the home. Heat pumps exchange heat and cold from the ground but can also use other sources. Perhaps much of the energy that is lost from the solar panel can be used as well. I see many applications already. Very interesting.

But it is cost effective to rip out your radiator and use the earth for cooling.

You should do an episode on lean manufacturing, I'm reading this book "the machine that change the world", describing traditional car manufacturing practices and It is evident why 7 years later no one can make a better car than the model S 2012

Talking about AC systems and the superbottle approach, could it be possible to connect the fridge/freezer into such a system? Every time I look at the way fridge/freezers work it annoys the hell out of me, great in the winter warming your house but when they have to work the hardest to cool it warms your house with all that work done.

My thoughts in the summer when I have the air conditioner going like crazy, pumping a ton of heat into the air (20 feet from the pool) and paying for a pool heater to heat the pool :/

Solid state will be at least 70% lighter and smaller. Imagine a brick sized battery doing the work of a wheelbarrow full of LI's.

    Nice job at explaining this.
Elon aims at mars. He need a system to manage temperatures of whole habitats in a smart and efficient way. But for a super bottle kinda system to be viable, it needs total integration to the building.
The back of my napkin says : Best way to retrofit half of the world is Smart AC systems that only run when needed... as efficient, silent and durable as possible.
    Surely is on the way.
