  • When things get so bad you decide to live in the clouds forever. I'm down.
The soundtrack and environment designs in ToS are top tier for the Gamecube era. I made this series to showcase their work as well as create something nostalgic for fans to relax to. Visuals and sound recorded on an emulation of the Gamecube version of the game.
The song is Forgotten City by Motoi Sakuraba (Thank you for the correction Elithralith :)
Town Graphic Designers: Yoshiyuki Aiuchi, Shinya Hirota, Natsuko Terasawa, Tomohiro Hayashi, Erina Shibata, Taro Yamamoto
Interior Map Graphic Designers: Kazuhiro Koizumi, Yutaka Nihei, Nobuhiro Hatori

This theme is so... Depressing. Beautiful, yet cold. Peaceful, yet claustrophobic.
Every theme in ToS is perfectly tuned to a feeling or emotion, and this one is a perfect example of it.
Exire is a prison. A prison built to simulate freedom. These people have no land, these people can't build new homes, they barely have room to walk. The amount of people who've probably slipped and fallen, I can't even imagine. And presuming they somehow survive the fall, it's only to a world that would stone them simply for existing.
The people of Meltokio's slums at least have the opportunity to grab a sword and go on an adventure, or try to become a Mercenary.
The Prisoners of the Church have the opportunity to do dirty jobs for the Pope or King to earn their freedom, and even if they return to a life of crime, they still have their freedom to do as they please and go where they'd like.
These people aren't living their lives for their own sake, they're practically waiting to die.

This is such a sad melody. This City, well first of all the name is obviously a play on the word "Exile," but the melody just evokes the feeling of just "it's over" or "hopelessness." Sure, they escaped to the skies, but, well this city isn't in the best of shape. Things are in very poor condition, and there's kind of, nothing they can do about it. And in reality it's likely very cold up there all the time. Must be hard to grow food. Crippling isolation. And I don't think they mentioned any way to get down from the floating city, even if they wanted to. So, they're kind of just, stuck there. Safe? For sure. Worth it? ... I don't know man.
I don't even remember if there was a reason to visit this city in game, or if anyone mentions it. Most players, like me, probably find this place by accident just from flying around.

I simply love your work on Exire's panoramas here. (The actual song here is "Forgotten City", it's a variation of "Serenade of the Elves" which is Heimdall's theme.)
