Neat thing about the Apples Ryuk is always eating. - In Japan, it's not "unacceptable" to eat the skin of an Apple, but it is very uncommon among native Japanese. Japanese people don't eat the skin of apples, nor of Peaches, Plums, and even Grapes (they actually make grape peelers). - So for Ryuk to be eating apples the way he does (a Western way), his actions are seen as very abnormal when compared to the common person in a Japanese person's life; making him seem that much more other-worldly/inhuman.
this vid was super! i love when you have a more analitical approach to the literary or art, as opposed to grabbing a single issue and just telling us what you find.
Your vid helped me to understand why a lot of people were pissed at the Netflix version. I saw it without any prior knowledge and thought the concept was dope. After seeing your vid, I want to take a look at some of the original stuff. Thanks!
The original manga and even the live action 2-movie set from Japan are so much more nuanced about two super smart people playing cat and mouse. It's longer so the tension builds much more deliberately.
21:30 Yeah, something like that. If I'm not mistaken the Chinese Zodiac consists of 108 stars. That number pops up in anime all the time. In Fist of the North Star (one of my personal fave manga), the rival school, Fist of the Southern Cross had exactly 108 disciples, and the TV anime series went 108 episodes, not counting the 109th recap episode. 22:55 We all need more Sake.
you should cover golgo13. tons of tropes in there. also, he's my fav. it's refreshing to have the protagonist be a cold blooded killer. he doesn't even have to rationalize anything. his stare is bone chilling. in fact i am sure that's a trope
Thank you for making another manga video! Another winner. Might I suggest for a future video Rumiko Takahashi who is popular not only in my homeland but also internationally as well??
Remember the death note movie? That took place in Seattle I was so excited about that “one of my favorite animes getting adapted into a live action movie”… and then it sucked yeah but I love this video I never rly thought about the psych thriller parts at all watching iy
That manga just has so many interesting themes, while still being a thrilling cat and mouse detective murder story at the same time! It is top level stuff!
Watched the anime twice. I read the first 2 volumes of the manga. The anime and manga are basically the same. You just choose which medium you prefer. Definitely a classic now. I take a potato chip! AND EAT IT!!! :P hahaha! Full Metal Alchemist next? :)
I don't know, I still think Light lacks a sense of humor is the real problem. I mean, not a single death by banana peel? Also, L is smarter than Light, just at an informational disadvantage.
I'm really only familiar with the Anime and it is AMAZING, it is one of those show you keep wanting to see another episode of at 3AM when you have to be up early next day for work.
I always wondered if light wasn't so cocky and kept everything under tight wraps and didn't make the whole Kira persona & if he didn't tease L, how would everything go out?
Have heard a lot about Deathnote, but with 108 volumes, it's a bit daunting to try to get into. But one thing I'm really curious about, how do the cops know to even look for the killer/Kira? If these victims are dying of heart attacks and such, wouldn't it seem more plausible they think it's some health thing, not a killer?
108 chapters but only 12 volumes. It's not THAT massive. The reason the authorities suspect someone is behind the deaths is because of the shear volume of the deaths and the fact that the majority are around Japan. It's not hard evidence, but it's enough to justify a small task force.
That's why Light is not as smart as people think/say he is, it should be easy to use the death note without anyone suspecting a thing(at least for a long time). There are so many people in the world that even a few thousand dropping dead over the course of a few weeks should not even be noticed, if it is done right. Light's mistake was focusing on where he lives, Japan. If I had it, people all over the world would be dying. But since there are over 7 BILLION people on Earth (and growing)it would be a drop in the ocean. Over years it might get noticed but so what, it should still not be able to be tracked down, not if the possessor of the death note is careful. Of course staying totally unknown would not make for a very interesting, drawn-out story (maybe a short story) and Light WANT'S people to know that someone is doing this to make people fear 'the punishment of God' for being a bad person.
The idea of killing all around the world is quite ludicrous. How do you expect Light to have intel as detailed like the ones he get from his father on criminal across the world? Especially if you don't speak the language correctly. He would be forced to kill high level target that are well publicised therefor leaving more traces of himself in the process.
Oh man is there a pros & cons stream where he talks about the Netflix adaptation? Seeing him so hopeful here..I know he must’ve had something to say about it lol
Hey Chris, I would love, and I’m sure others would love it too, if you were to do a review of the shonen manga “Berserk”. Of course if you haven’t read it, it’s very long and unfinished so I understand not wanting to make the time commitment, but if you have or are interested I know you’d make a lot of people very happy!
Elinico Ritale you’re right, I was tired and mistyped lol. It’s like THE definition of a seinen manga lol. I gotta stop typing comments at 4 am and go to bed lmao 😂
I don't know anything about this comic, but listening to you, I picked up on somethings. I have porphyria. Sunlight will instantly start maiming me. The gut pain is horrific. I have to eat glucose to suppress those things as much as possible. To suppress Light, L is always eating sugar.
Well, I should say Bakuman (my favourite manga, re-read it 6 times already) is more of the Slice of Life genre, and doesn't feature a particularly realistic artwork, specially compared to Death Note which is way too realistic (by manga standards). It would be great if you could do an episode of Bakuman; it's an amazing piece of work and is filled not only with tropes (The Yoshida-Hiramaru villain/hero interplay is too awesome) but LOTS of meta as part of their storytelling (ie: "switching genres" episodically to better illustrate the feeling of that particular chapter)... besides, it got a bad reputation due to ignorants saying it's "horribly sexist", perhaps you can do proper justice to this great work...? Here's hoiping you do it someday!!
22:16 - context is mostly the same, so no, it's a perfect example of whitewashing (or a blackwashing if we talking about L in the Netflix version). BTW, in the end that movie sucked hard and have no sequels^^
thanks, I'll definitely go watch them :). This was the first video of yours I watched, and I like your commentary style and way of exposing ideas. I'll subscribe.
Big mistake L is much smarter than Light but his willingness to not believe in shinigami was why he admitted defeat and told his name to see if it was true
Man they really fucked Death note with that second arc. It should've ended with Light winning and then it flashes years into the future and we see light in his prefect world and he is sad and bored and reflects on what L really was to him, a friend or a foe? The second arc feels more like a reaction to people really loving the manga and it wasn't as planned out as the first arc, which happens to so many creators like Akira with the Buu arc and Kentaro Miura with everything after the Golden age arc in Berserk in both cases they aren't bad but they aren't as focused and you can see how they aren't as well planned out as that beginning was. But I gotta say recently Kentaro Miura has gotten himself out of that rut and it seems with all the time he has taken away has been planning things and might deliver something as good as his first arc.
These videos are great except for the fact that he was drinking and then at the end says he’s leaving to buy more. Not that it’s any of my business but alcohol can sneak up on you. Hope it did not go any further than that. It’s not a judgement on his character, anybody can fall into that trap.
Shonen is different than Bishounen. What you're explaining is the latter one. It's more of a character trope rater tan a genre. Shonen means BOYS, hence Shounen Manga is a manga with boy-ish story and caracters, mostly with hot chicks and power fantasy. Please pin this so there's no more word misunderstanding
Please no, Dathnote was one of my least favorite Anime's. If I wanted to constantly be told someone is a genius only to have him act like an idiot, I would have gotten into politics. I'd recommend Code Geass where the main character actually is intelligent and isn't a douche-bag from day one.
My wife always said I'm like L. As I type this I'm chewing on a starburst perched barefoot on a chair my elbows resting on my knees and I live a very Spartan life by choice. She thought it was uncanny. As much as we loved death note it became very awkward for her to watch, even my hair is identical. This was all completely coincidental.
Even though I love Death Note, I really hate how people say the character of Light is so smart or a genius. If he's so smart why does he come close to being caught? Or even suspected? If I had the Death Note I would just find and write names of people who deserve to die (yes I know that's subjective) without getting embroiled with the cops in the first place. Of course I'd have to be careful how I got the names, looking people up on the internet can be traced.
So there can be a story. "If the Flash is so fast why doesn't he just beat every villain in one page?" "If Batman's so prepared for everything how does he ever have trouble with the Joker?"
Netflix has (had?) an anime version, something like 30 eps. I started watching, thought it was good, but got bored somewhere in the 15-20 episode range. Haven't finished it. I _did_ watch the live action version on Netflix and enjoyed it. Maybe not as faithful to the original material as the anime, but they only had two hours to tell the whole story. At this point, that's enough of a time investment for me. Moving on to something new.

Can the rivalry between Light and L be compared to the one between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty? Two sides of the same coin?
For sure. It's just that for this story we're aligned with the Moriarty point of view. But there are certainly similarities.
Quiro Pretty much. It's not too surprising considering that, at least initially, L was based on Sherlock Holmes.
ah, so thats where it comes from...

How did this video, the greatest crossover event in RUclips history (ComicTropes X Death Note) not get like twenty times more views than this

Death Note is so good that it can make a Japanese high school student eating a potato chip both riotously funny and unbelievably tense.
I got 2 more comic tropes for you. Berserk and Jojo, you won't be disappointed and if you are then I failed.
Jojos would be interesting bc the whole book is based around tropes lmao
This is one of my all time favorite manga. I reread it frequently.
Also, you should have eaten a potato chip for every trope.
13:25 He uses the Korean poster for Death Note.
like spongebob ingrained into my mind, when in doubt pinkey out chris!
Death Note, especially in the early volumes, is my favorite manga.
0:44 108 chapters* not Volumes. There were 12 Volumes with 9 chapters each.
Other than that little detail, great video!
Personally i despise Light as a person, but he is a good character and really makes the comic as good as it is.
Might be my favorite episode lol
I always wondered if light wasn't so cocky and kept everything under tight wraps and didn't make the whole Kira persona & if he didn't tease L, how would everything go out?
That’s like the fatal flaw of the character his ego and hubris
