- Multiple-choice tests are very efficient, but when test takers make guesses their score will depend partly on their luck. Dr Martin Bush explains how the impact of guesswork can be reduced -- or even eliminated entirely -- by using novel test formats. For further reading look up Martin's article entitled "Reducing the need for guesswork in multiple-choice tests" published in 2014 in the academic journal "Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education". Martin is a Principal Lecturer in Informatics here at LSBU.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Don't waste your time If you want to improve your test taking skills. This video is for remaking tests for students to score higher.

Obrigado!
thank you 😭
you saved 10 minutes of my life bro.
This is very helpful, at least it gives you another chance to get your
answer in multiple choice question right, better than traditional
multiple choice question which one-way answer.
Professor-X can walk
dirty lmao
I thought this will help us score more!
sorry but multiple choice tests are there to confuse you and not test your knowledge.
Joanna Tomkiewicz well if you know it then you shouldn’t get confused
Depends how the test is set up, and how well you know your stuff. Also, frankly, it depends on how well you can read and interpret the question and the possible answers - this comes down to attention to detail as much as anything.
For example, in his spider question, I'd expect to get a mark for saying most spiders have six legs. That is factually correct. I know that spiders have eight legs, but that means they do indeed have six legs - the question does not say _only_ six legs, after all.

1) This is interesting
2) This guy's voice is extremely soothing
3) Disregard the moronic children in the comments who were looking for a way to hack their way around a test instead of just learning the material
Superb technique sir... Very useful video
This is not helpful for taking tests, only helpful for the redisgning tests.
I think multiple choice question are wrong by nature. The text gives you the answer in front of your eyes and you just have to recognize it, but not thinking an your own. Thinking is the key of learning not recognize pre-made answers
wha, luca. stepping out the box
I agree, if you have a good memory you don’t really need to learn as long as you recognize the right answer.
JEE Advanced is also multiple choice but no one can use work the guess work.
Yes, agree. Multiple choice should never exist at university, high school is bad enough.
It is easier for teachers to grade.
Sounds a great test taking system, but frankly speaking, I do not like multiple choice questions as a formative assessment tool although any test has pros and cons. Especially, in a university setting, multiple choice questions always sound odd to me.
On what basis are the score vs knowledge profiles made?
i think negative marking must not be included i this perspective that somehow lead to unjust so better to move to positivity that can be a better choice for test aims.
Accounting Coach no bro ! it is very important. You look like an indian so as you may know jee, upsc and neet are the main ones using this technique. It makes it easier to distinguish between the one who knows or doesn't. Though are mcq's good enough all in all is another topic of serious discussion......
Did you listen to the video?
You cannot mark 6 legs" as a wrong answer. It is a fact that all spiders have 6 legs. In fact, the arachnid characteristics is 8 legs, but that means they _do_ have 6 legs.
The question does not say _only_ 6 legs...
I have tried the negative marking but find this way much better. To transition toward to fraction marks, I'm thinking I'll try the negative/subset hybrid (5:30) first. I'm just wondering though, if a student chooses just one answer, and it's a wrong one, do I still give him -1?
Where can you find that software/program that Martin is talking about at the end? I'd like to try that out. Please let me know what its called exactly and where to find it. Thanks.
so if in doubt pick C
Actually a lot of people say the mot common answer is c yet it is actually b
What about subset marking (3, -1, -1, -1) but recording any negative mark as 0. That is selects 2 wrong answers they get 0 not -2. These would skew the partial marks upwards and would be well received by students? I wonder if this have been modelled, used, and/or published?
Heisenberg.
😂Breaking bad
Great test taking system, although, the only problem is that next to no teachers are going to use it because they fell hopelessly in love with the traditional exam.
so basically he went through this entire process to find another way to do a test to have the same results we already have? what was the point of that?
I couldn't hear him properly. Sometimes his voice drifts away. I don't want to keep turning my headphones up
This is not helpful.
He lost me in the first 3 min
They are covering 25 subjects millions of information and they just ask us some of them this test their knowledge i don't think so........
well thought
give negative points for wrong answer... 3/4 x -0,5 and or 1/4 +1
I prefer multiple choice myself.
walter white !! is that you?
You goddamn right
Multiple choice is only good for professors, making it easy to correct. Bad for students.
Not helpful. I was looking for a tip....
Wow, 14 minutes if nothing
What a quiet public speaker. All I heard was mumbling
Get your ears checked, it's very easy to understand this man and his voice is pleasant
