The reason she attacks you is because you are helping tattletail in the gradual process of summoning the devil to kill mama and send her to hell.

Mama killed the people, because they were getting too close to her children, which is why she was pulled off of shelves (it's in the website for Waygetter, if I'm not mistaken).. she's just a really messed up toy, and the Baby Tattletails know that, so they banish Mama for good with the help of the player.

The things I find scary about this game are the creepy af music, the atmosphere, and the distinct lack of jumpscares when compared to some... *ahem*... other games.
There are jumpscares though, that compared to some... other games... occur when you die.
