I’ve been looking for that perfect “personal item” bag for budget airlines. I’ve tried duffles, backpacks, and underseaters. I’m obsessed with TNF so when I saw this size online on sale (and in a cute pink color), and after watching your review, I knew I had to snatch it up. It looks like the perfect duffle/backpack combo. Thanks for reviewing this bag
Thanks for the great review, and for showing those awesome eagle creek packing bags. Im now purchasing some of those myself to go along with my XS duffel!
Thank you for this review on the XS. I have the medium and 2 larges, and been wondering whether to get a S or XS. REI has stopped carrying these small sizes so can't touch/feel them where I live. I think XS is what I will go with. Thanks again!
Got an XS one for my birthday (based on your vid) - it’s great! I do wish it had a single carry strap across the top, and a pocket on each end cap for better organization but it’s a nice addition to the collection!
Hey Daniel! That's awesome! Glad to hear you like it. You're right and the pocket it does have is super small, which is probably my biggest complaint. Thanks for sharing and I hope you enjoy!
Hi Jempol, that's great! That was my first thought too, I thought it would be too small for what I needed. Now it's the bag I grab first when traveling. Take care!
thank you for this great and insightful review! best one out here. you've definitely helped me on this and i'm convinced to get one for my upcoming trip!
@@ChrisU I appreciate the effort you put into this and your other reviews. It is clear to me that you want to give a comprehensive overview from a user's perspective. I'm picky about my bags because details do matter, and you are doing an amazing job in pointing them out and in your vids you're hitting the nail on the head. And for that I salute you, my good Sir! Happy travels!
Hello, love your review! I have the same bag and I have the feeling that the two handles on the long sides of the bag are not the exact same size. Like the one on the side where the little pocket on the outside is is a little smaller and more difficult to grab. I wanted to ask you how that is on your bag. Take care!
Hi Speeding777! I've not had a chance to look at the Gregory Compass 30 in person. I like your idea, I may have to pick one up and see how it compares! Take care!
Hi Gabriel! That's a great question! I've not had an opportunity to look at the North Face in M yet. It appears based on the North Face website that it is a 71 liter bag making it larger than the Patagonia 60 liter bag. From my experience with the North Face duffel in XS/S, I feel that their back pack straps are more comfortable and I like the arrangement of the exterior grab handles. On the Patagonia, I love the internal compression straps to help keep your items compressed and stable. The North Face duffel in XS is probably my favorite bag I own based on its versatility, even though it is a smaller sized bag. With that being said, both Patagonia and The North Face make a great product and you can't go wrong with either. I think it comes down to how you want to use the bags and if you need 71 liters of space. I'm sorry to dance around your question but it's a tough one to answer! Thanks!
great video chris!!!!!! big thumbs up bro. i am torn between TNF basecamp small vs. xs, may i ask if what can you recomment to get, i am 5'6 in height about 150lbs. and ill be needing for everyday commute bag, and things that ill put in there is a pair of gym shoes, weight lifting belt, protein shaker, toiletries, maybe a few pair of change clothes, and a towel. thanks again for amazing review of this great duffle bag.
Hi awel! Thank you! The base camp XS is one of my all time favorite bags. It should be able to handle everything you've mentioned. I think the size also makes it more suitable for a commuter bag. The issue though, is you will not be able to "add" any extra space in the bag. What I mean by that, if you ever want to possibly travel or use the bag for other purposes you may like having a larger bag. So for me, if I need a commuter/gym/short trip bag, my choice would be the XS. If I want more of a "do all" bag to include longer trips, I would choose the Small. Both are great bags and I completely understand the struggle of trying to decide : ) I've uploaded a size comparison video if you want to take a closer look. Feel free to check it out. ruclips.net/video/gUO-LCadT6E/видео.html Take care!
I hope you can answer this comment... does it goes under the seat of the plane? I don't know if you have said it, unfortunately english is not my mother language and I'm not sure if you have said it...
Hi Michschnei! Yes, this will fit under the seat of a plane. I've only done so on US domestic flights though, but I've used it multiple times. Take care!
Hey The Everyday Vegan! I just looked up the info on the toiletry bag. I purchased in 2015 from the REI outlet for $7.73. It's the REI Co-op Micro Shower Kit, item #8851530001, in Dark Jade/Kiwi Blue. Unfortunately, it appears that REI no longer carry's the bag. It appears that REI carries a small toiletry bag but I'm unsure how it compares, REI Co-op Travel Kit - Small, item #127992. Hope this helps! Take care!
The new version of the base camp duffel has a really thick material, too thick imo. Makes it difficult to zip and use. Do you know if his old version is also very thick?
Just wondering, how tall are you ? I ordered the Small version since I'm 6'4 (193cm) to use it as a backpack, but I'm afraid it might be too large ? What's your opinion ? Thanks for the review !
Hi Young Dro, I'm 5'9. I actually ordered a small sometime back and loved the size. The size was in between this bag and say the Patagonia Black Hole 60L. Being 6'4 you may actually like and find better use for the small. The XS is a great bag so it may depend on how you'll use the bag. I'm currently on a 3 day trip we're I am limited to a personal item 18x14x8 and the XS has worked with no issue. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Chris U thanks for quick answer, i'll mostly use it for daily commute to work + gym gear/clothes. I need an all purpose backpack for everyday use that van also be used for 3-4 day travels :)
I'll mostly use it for everyday commute to work with some gym clothes/gear/shoes inside it. I also want to be able to use it for long weekends away from home with my GF. Have you had any experience with taking the S size bag as cabin luggage on a flight ? Thanks for your quick reply by the way !
Young Dro, I unfortunately had to return the S bag after having it a few weeks. From my brief experience though, I feel that the S bag would make an ideal carry on for most airlines. Either bag would be great for the gym. If your daily commute involves public transportation with lots of people, the larger size may come into play. The S bag does gives quite a bit more room than the XS, which may work better for you. For shorter trips or a more restrictive airlines such as Frontier or Spirit in the US, I've found the XS to be perfect for my needs. One last thing, it's always nice to have too much room opposed to not enough. I know my reply doesn't give a straight answer, but both bags are awesome and an extremely tough choice between the two. Thanks!
Hey Nichkhun Maverick! I use the Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Cube size medium. I also use the Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Clean Dirty Cube size medium, which is probably my favorite packing cube. Overall awesome packing cubes! You can find them at Eagle Creek's website, Amazon, REI, Backcountry.com to name a few. Eagle Creek makes different sizes but the medium has worked the best for me. Take care!
Chris U I'm liking the color as well as the bag. How do like the duffel bag so far? Is it uncomfortable when carrying it like backpack? ChedengMB, I love the bag and highly recommend! The bag is not uncomfortable at all when carrying as a backpack. It would be nice if it had a chest/sternum strap. It does lack the organization of the traditional backpack too. Lots of room for it's size though. I'm a big fan of using the bag to travel, especially short trips of 2-3 days. Hi Chris! I'm new subscriber. I like yr videos. I want to know if the back pack straps r hideable & removable. Does this bag has internal compression straps?
Hi The Truth and thank you! Great questions! The backpack straps are not hide able and can be removed with a little work. To remove, you have to pull the ends of the straps out and through the plastic connectors. Not as easy as other bags that have a snap to connect/disconnect. No internal compression straps, only the compression straps on the outside of the bag. Overall, an awesome, smaller travel bag! Hope this helps : ) Take care!
Could i detach one strap and attach the one left on to the tie in point of the one that has been removed in order to wear it with one cross body strap?
Hi Blind side! That's actually a great question. I've not thought about wearing it cross body. That may be possible but one problem you could face is the way the backpack straps are padded may not be as comfortable as wearing as a backpack. Also, the strap may not be long enough to comfortably carry the bag. I may have to give that one a try : ) Take care!
Hey Julia! I’ve used this bag as my personal item (under seat) on United in the past, along with Delta, American, Southwest, and West Jet. Also placed in the overhead bin on Delta. I would have no issue using this bag as either a personal item or carry-on. Definitely one of my all time favorite bags 🙂. Hope this helps. Take care!
Hey Chris! Thanks for replying, your comment really helps. I just purchased this bag and am flying United in a few weeks. So nice to know that I can carry it on! Thanks again! Take care
Chris U I just have 1 more question. How long ago did you fly United and fit this bag as your personal item under the seat? I’ve been reading a lot about United cutting down on the size that is acceptable for the personal item.
Julia, that's a great question! It has been a while, I would guess it's been over a year ago or so. We flew ATL-YYC through Houston. At that time, no questions asked. I was trying to find an airline with a similar size restriction. I failed to add Jet Blue to my original response, which we flew last summer. Their personal item size is limited to 17"x13"x8", which may be the closest to United. Again, no problems, questions, etc. I know it's not United, but we flew Delta and AA end of March, beginning of April this year. On segments of our trip, we flew 2 of their smaller planes and the bag worked for my personal item. For reference, I had to Valet my Away carry-on on both planes. I completely understand your concern! I haven't heard of United tightening up but I guess it wouldn't surprise me. To me though, as long as the bag isn't over packed, bulging at the seams, it should work. Soft sided bags do give some flexibility to fit in tight places when/if necessary. I would use the bag with no concern, but I know that's easy for me to say since you're the one traveling : ) If I come across any additional information I'll be happy to share. Thanks!
Yes, both should work. I’ve only used on US domestic flights though. XS will fit under the seat for a personal item and the Small should fit in the overhead bin for a carry on.
Hi! I'm about 5'9". I feel the S would actually be a nice size. If you have an opportunity to watch my review of the Patagonia 60L Black Hole Duffel, I show what it looks like on me. The North Face S will be smaller than the size of the 60L Black Hole but larger than the Base Camp Duffel in XS. It's a nice size between the 2 bags mentioned and I would not hesitate to take a look at the bag. I previously had the S bag for a short amount of time but returned it. It's still on my radar though and someday I may pick it back up. Thanks!
Hey Teow Hai Way! A 15" laptop will fit in the bag, but there is no dedicated laptop "pocket" in the bag. If you plan to carry a laptop, I recommend some type of case or protective sleeve. Other than that, I see no issue carrying a 15" laptop. Take care!
Hey Cory! Yes, you can pack a 13 in laptop in the bag. The only downfall is that the bag offers no protection, so I would recommend using some kind of sleeve/case for the laptop. Take care!
Hi Bobby! I would keep my eye on ebags.com and sign up for their emails. They send emails in regards to 20%-30% off. I've also had some luck on backcountry.com and rei.com. At this point, the XS has been my go to bag so I think I'm going to hold on to it. Thanks!
