As someone who has visited Germany over 20 times I find it very sad that so much of pre-war Germany no longer exists. What a pity that the Germans of the late 1920s and early 1930s could not foresee what would happen to their country if they voted for the Nazis.
the war destroyed many big cities but the time afterwards destroyed even more buildings because it had to look "modern" and "street friendly". More buildings got torn down after 1945 than what had been destroyed in the whole war...let that sink in

After the war the city was in ruins and the Soviets had no interests of rebuilding it because it would have taken forever and it was cheaper to reuse the bricks for Stalinist flats and or clear way for concrete blocks. The Soviets "only" annexed the Northern half of East Prussia, the southern half was taken by Poland (with the consent of the Allied powers)
