I tried to explain this song to a couple of younger people the other day. I just couldn't make them understand. I had to see this again to show myself I really did remember this song this way. Glad it's here in 2024. Glad I'm here, too.

Todd in the Shadows sent me here. Maybe it's not their best album, but even during his review I could hear how incredibly catchy this song is. Can't stop listening to it.

    • @gamerguy425

Yeah I think this is a solid track and at least sounds like what you'd expect out of CSNY, doesn't have overblown harmonies or anything. The rest of it just sounds half-baked or mishandled at best though just off what I heard in the review.

Neil also quickly disowned the record too. He called it, “songs for balding baseheads”! His songs were the best thing on it. Aside from the title track, they weren’t his top shelf songs either.

Yeah, I heard live versions before American Dream. I did like NY’s contributions to the album, but I still don’t think they were his best. Just like on the next CSNY record, Looking Forward, Neil’s song were much better then the others. So much so, that his Silver & Gold Live came out rather quickly with the solo versions of the CSNY songs. Very beautiful renditions. Always felt that CSN was more of a distraction towards Neil’s creative momentum than a benefit. Need proof? Look at their output solo or together the past 50 years. Props to Croz, he’s been on a roll lately.

I don’t care what people say, including Neil Young, and I’m a die hard Neil fan, I love this album and to me there were so many great new songs on it. Think of CSNY meets 80’s culture. This Old House, Clear Blue Skies, Got It Made, Name Of Love, Drivin’ Thunder to name a few. Anyone else agree that it’s a better album than others say?

  • @KOHF34

It’s nice watching David Crosby in this video looking sober and healthy, and looking like he has a new lease on life. It’s a shame he fell out with Neil, because Neil Young told him that if he sobered up, he would get the band together again, and he incentivized him to get sober. He did just that.

The album was not a flop, it went Platinum and Top 15 and was Neil’s biggest success in the 1980s.
In fact this video premiered on MTV along with Comfortably Numb from Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound of Thunder on the MTV show Now Hear This. I felt sorry that the Winger video that was premiered was mercifully overshadowed

I really like the tranquil transition at 2:23 (of 2:05 - 2:42 segment), going from chaotic to serenity. I think it’s that one chime that catches me. The chime chorus at 1:58 and 3:18 is mellifluous, when you plus/minus a couple seconds. Also, such a powerful statement “Don’t know where things went wrong. Might have been when you, were young and strong.” Can’t recall where I first heard this, may have been on one of those VH1 specials about past music or about the 80s. Great video too, I like the revolutionary soldier uniforms.

RIP David Crosby. Died in January of this year (2023). Lived to the ripe old age of 81, which is incredible given his lifestyle and years of drug addiction. He genuinely has a strength that went faaaaar beyond how strong most people are. Being addicted to drugs like heroin, cocaine and alcohol, and managing to get himself off these drugs and break the addiction, was truly herculean feat, he was a superman to manage to do that. Most people can't.
Neil Young only agreed to do another CSNY album, this one called American Dream, if Crosby could get off drugs. It wasn't a particularly good album (apart from this title track), but that doesn't matter. Ultimately, this album was the reason Crosby got off drugs, and so it doesn't really matter how good the music is, it saved his life and probably added decades to his eventual lifespan.

If only the Democratic voters realized that their party is doing it exactly the same way. We learned in 2020 that there's not two parties or you weren't paying attention

I hadn't thought of this song in three decades, and then it suddenly popped into my head about a week ago. It took me until now to figure out what it was. I could hear the flute part and the guy's voice but couldn't remember the name or the lyrics. And then I suddenly remembered the band's name.

Well very few of us Canadian's that live in Southern Ontario have any hard feelings about our "American friends" We are alot alike our Great Lakes neighbours say from the great States of Michigan and Wisconsin:} Being in close proximity likely why we get along well a good neigbour we enjoy having or visiting

The only time I called a radio station was to complain . When this was released, our local ‘ ILR , Ocean Sound Portsmouth/Southampton , Amazingly amidst it’s constant Michell Jackson & Billy Ocean usual tunes , played this - but the DJ crashed the final third to fade ...having just smoked one my bliss was turned to fury and immediately called the number given out by the Cheesey sod ( I reached the switchboard only ) . After the next record had been allowed to finish , the DJ - with all the Sarcasm and Ire he could muster announced through gritted teeth “ The next time I play American Dream by CSN&Y, I promise to play it all...EVERY LAST NOTE ....” - Victory over the station previously known as ‘ Radio Victory ‘ , which played The Tubes rather than Wham or ABBA. Love from wessexshire 🏴😇🍄 Footnote - Ocean Sound was swallowed up by even cheesier super - wankers , Capital ....
