  • Today, I wanted to talk about how Dark Souls and Elden Ring changed my life. The souls series along with Bloodborne and Sekiro really gave me the confidence and ability to think about my life differently and avoid fear of failure. Dark Souls truly changed my life and taught me to embrace challenges, and I can't thank Fromsoftware enough for their incredible works of art.

I remember being invaded in Dark Souls 3 the very first time I got to the Ringed City. I was very bad at PvP, so I just sat down, hoping that the invader would leave. Instead they waved at me and showed me the safe path through the ghost archer guys, all the way to the next bonfire. The most wholesome moment I've ever experienced in online gaming.

Nice. A lot of souls players do this. At some point it is just no fun to win from a player that is relatively new to the game. They want a challenge.
I’ve been playing souls games since demon’s souls and 3vs1 invade is just so awesome. That’s why some souls addicts invade, not to kill someone who “barely” knows how to play the game.

    The moral of the DemonSoulsBorneRing series is to not give up. Giving up complete means going hollow. But also;
    - You shouldn't be afraid of failing.
    - Taking a breather or putting something aside and taking a breather is not the same as giving up.
    - Mindlessly throwing yourself at a problem again and again is akin to insanity and means you're not thinking clearly.
    - And most notably, learning to focus on and keeping a steady breath through intense situations is key to a successful outcome. Keeping a level head and accepting humility will net your rewards

Honestly, I'm just glad you didn't let the community gate-keep you. As a kid when Dark Souls first dropped, it taught me very early on that challenges are not something to shy away from. I practically spent half of my childhood on this series, and Elden Ring feels like an idealized version of Dark Souls, combined with their knowledge gained from Demon's Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro, and I felt that gratification that the Souls formula had reached its peak. Watching this series grow with me has been a great experience.

It's wholesome to see that a video game opened your mind to understand that practice is everything. I'm playing these games as an adult (turning 31 soon) and it's so rewarding once you understand this is a game of patience, planning, analysis. Elden Ring got me hooked hard.
Just my story (long rant): grew up being told i'm talented at drawing and, as such, i drew a lot because i liked being praised. But didn't actively put much effort into it. And then met other people who drew better than me just because they practiced more. And then met people who initially were told they're lacking talent but got there anyways with practice and love for it. This is when i learnt there is no "talent", just what YOU like doing and the amount of time spent on it. If you like something enough, you will get good at it, but having patience with yourself is the hardest thing.
I grew up poor and a girl, so I played video games at my friends' place only or just watched them play. I sucked at most games, but always did research and practiced when i could, hoping to beat or at least be a challenge for my friends.
Skipping 15 years ahead, i encouraged my partner (gamer since an early age) to buy DS3, seen videos of it and we knew it was hard, but gorgeous. He died 15 times to Jundex Gundyr and gave up on it, his ego too hurt to learn the buttons and attack pattern. Seeing him fail so badly scared me and we didn't touch the game for 3 years. January this year, i quit my job and in that darkness and stress, i promised him i will help with DS3 to be his guide. I wanted something to do. He beat the entire game and all the bosses within 2 weeks, Jundex Gundyr within 5 tries and Vordt on first try. I was watching playthroughs, memorizing the path and enemy spawns as well as invisible walls and tricks and essentially back-sitting him where to go as his sense of direction is much worse than mine.
Elden Ring came out, i got a job and bought him a copy with the promise to do the same thing. Which we did for a month straight. He finished it 4 times and then bought me a copy as well, so we can play together. Thankfully, i remembered how much he struggled in DS3 and dying to Soldier of Godrick was just a bit hurtful (as i chugged all my estus by accident before, trying to roll). My partner always let me face the boss on my own and, if i die early, he wouldn't finish it off, but have me face it again until i properly dodged attacks. Needless to say that we both platinum-ed Elden Ring and it brought us so much closer to one another, letting ego aside and accepting feedback from one another. We'll look to play all of their games together, as soon as they're on sale.
Long story short, i love this community and what FromSoftware created. It feels like these games are for mature audiences.

Thank you for making this Ember! Dark Souls (1) is probably the only game I've played so far that not only met my expectations but went above and beyond them. The music, the characters, the monster/boss designs, all of it seemed to fill a hole I didn't really knew I had. Like many of us it taught me how to keep pushing forward, get creative when stuck, and be intentional in every action I take. It's lessons we can apply to our every day lives. We will face astounding adversity, but no matter what we shouldn't give into despair- it may not be as epic in our every day lives, but overtime it makes a difference.

I’m 13 and was introduced to the series by my older brother, who is 19, and boy am I glad he did. This game restored my humanity and changed gaming for me as a whole. Before the souls series, I use to play ongoing shooters such as Valorant and Apex Legends. I was at the point where gaming just didn’t feel fun anymore. I’ve now played DS1+DLC, DS3+DLC, Elden Ring, and got the platinum for Demon’s Souls. After I beat DS2, I’ll move onto Bloodborne and Sekiro. After playing DS1, I became so eager to play so many games. This series truly is a wondrous experience that is worth dying and losing your souls over and over again for. Thank you, FromSoftware.

I remember my buddy got my ds3 as a gift for my 16th birthday. I tried so hard. And I couldn’t beat the game. I put it down and then a couple months later, I was so mad I couldn’t beat it. So I beat it, then I went on to ds1 and then elden ring then sekiro, I learned to never give up just through games. Then I joined the army, broke my leg in basic training and they tried to send me home. And I spoke to my 1sg with the complete intent to go home, and he said “do you really wanna be here kid?” And I said, “if I stop now I would disappoint myself and my future self; I need this, you will not get rid of me” my leg healed and then I completed my forge. (It’s 40 miles in 4 days while learning to clear rooms and all sorts of shit) it rained everyday. But I refuse to give up. My feet were tired, my leg was sore because I didn’t do physical therapy. I fought like hell. I lost 60 pounds and now I’m in the real army. And soon I will be deployed.
Don’t you fuckers ever give up.

These games teach dedication and commitment that can stick with you your whole life. I was so depressed when I first played Dark Souls and I was trying to find a game to distract me from the struggles of real life. By the time I overcame the struggles of the game that at times felt impossible, I learned I have it in me to overcome a lot of struggles IRL. Obviously you don’t have to like Dark Souls to be successful in life, but I think it’s likely that people who gave up on Dark Souls are the same type of people to give up at everything else when it gets tough.
