Why Doesn't God Answer Our Prayers?

  • Jesus tells us that if we knock, the door will be opened to us, that all who come to him in prayer will get what they want. But this isn't always the case, is it? Sometimes, our prayers are not answered. What does this say about God, and how do we reconcile this with our faith?

You've layered so many conditions onto prayer that you may as well say that it's either random, not going to happen, or was going to happen anyway - Which means the act of prayer is irrelevant. So why even bother praying?

I was 36, out of the Army for two years, and stuck in a dead end, low-paying job. I regretted leaving the Army. But there was no going back and if I could I would have. Now I was frustrated but worse, truly afraid. I prayed intently to God, telling Him that I made no demands or expectations of Him, but that I would appreciate any help, anything, from Him. One month later, while stacking books at my low-paying job, I received a phone call from my head-hunter. My job interview was successful. I had a job offer at a very good salary, excellent benefits, and restored me to the middle class. More, I now had a meaningful future ahead of me. Was I grateful? You bet I was and I profusely thanked the Lord.

I'm also considering converting to Catholicism. I'm a Protestant but, it just doesn't seem to fit me and who I am. It seems while in the past it was corrupt with greed and evil, now in the present day, it just seems like me, like my path. My journey to eventually going to heaven and it just calls to me. I cannot describe it, but it seems like God is calling me and that Catholicism is the christian denomination that he wants me to follow. Christians can walk different denominations, whether it be Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Non Denominational, or Eastern, or Messianic Judaism, after all for most denominations who are christian, aren't we all just brothers and sisters in Christ? One Family, ko'okahi Ohana, Uno/una Familia? And i say this statement as an attempt to unite all sects in Christianity in love, compassion and acceptance of one and other, after all, we read the same scriptures, we live in the same world, but most importantly, we all worship the same God.

Ah yes, prayer... When something good happens in our life, regardless of who worked for it or how hard they worked for it... its God. When something bad happens in our life, its all us or the work of some almost-god evil thing.
Prayer works on the rate of chance, or worse. Ironically, when tested, there are many times where the extra stress to perform that's put on the person who knows they are being prayed for causes the chance of the prayer being fulfilled to be worse than chance.
Conformation bias at its finest. If I ask for it, and I get it, regardless of how much effort I put into it... "THANK GOD!" If I ask for it, and don't get it... "well, sometimes God says no", or "when god closes a door, he opens a window". Whether people get what they ask for or not, they use it to say God answers prayer. Meanwhile, we have no way to tell if it was God answering prayer, or random chance.

Yeah… where’s the retort to this? (I can just delete my comment… cause this says it better). I’m dying to be on board but this is exact thing I can’t get passed……..
And to top it off, “Blessed are those who believe but have not seen”, ie If you still have Faith and nothing is going your way then you’re even better off than those who have “seen”… a really nice catch-all. And throw in a nice “suffering is redemptive”, covers it all.

Because for some reason, we hold God way less accountable than any human. Imagine calling someone for help who you’ve been let down by soooo many times, and yet people tell you that the problem is you’re not asking the right way....or imagine trusting in someone who you’ve heard all these amazing stories about how he helped other people....just not YOU. I mean, it’s ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, I attend Mass weekly. Confession monthly. I just feel I am more faithful to God than he is to me.

The waters rose to where he had to climb onto the roof, and a helicopter came and lowered a basket. "No, God will save me!" The man drowned, and said to God, "I trusted in You; why did You not save me?" God said, "I sent you a Jeep, I sent you a boat, I sent you a helicopter. You refused them and it is MY fault?"

And then he takes them away before anything can start? I am so confused. I understand they have free will but I don't get it. Why show this person to me and then take them away? What's the point? If he knows that person would just ditch me? I asked so many times to make me forget them then, if they dont want me, so that I can find a good spouse who does. There are a few questions i think we should stop trying to answer. This is 1, another is why do bad things happen to people. There is no good answer. Only God can answer each of us. And I feel when/if He answers, it will be unique to each of us. Unique to our situation, suited to our understanding. I get Him not answering your prayer for your girlfriend to come back to you. However, to me, the explanation doesnt hold for someone praying for a loved one's life or an end to war.

So basically God love syou more then He love me. Well then He can keep his false love, he supposed good deeds, and let me do things my way. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit [d]of itself [e]but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him [f]bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so [g]prove to be My disciples. 9 Just as the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; remain in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.

So, on one of Father Casey's videos from this time last month, I mentioned I was moving across the country, leaving friends and personal belongings. At the time, I wasn't seeing a lot of God's hand in my life. I still don't, not really, but I'm alive, didn't get sick from traveling, and am mostly settled. It wasn't the answer I wanted and the future is uncertain but it's at least an answer to "please get me through this alive". I guess God's Big Picture takes time. Sometimes when you jump the parachute doesn't open right away. You get a few scrapes and bumps along the way but eventually IT WILL open and life will be more "smooth sailing". You have taken the arduous work of overcoming your fears to move across the country. You opened the ground, you tilled it open for God to plant the seeds he wants to plant. That plant doesn't grow into fruition right away. Please still give it time. At least a year unless you have panic attacks or something. YOU ARE BRAVE. You are incredible. Some people say that they don't believe in God because not all prayers are answered, but we most be careful with the standard we want to set. Let me explain:
Let's say all praers are answered, would that lead them to believe in God? Or would they believe in pagan nonsense that the universe arranges itself whenever we have a wish, like if it was a kind of natural law? Would they believe God answered their prayers or they would turn to the Law of Attraction, believing that whatever they think will become a reality?
The fact not all prayers are answered shows something that we may interpret as "arbitrary" (well, if we don't know God's plans nor His reasons, of course it will seem arbitrary), and it's because of that that we can now there is a Will behind it.

God answers prayers in ways we often do not expect him to. God's ways are NOT our ways. He sees what we do not. He knows what we do not. The key in all of this is seeing when those prayers ARE answered--even when it's not the way we would have wanted them answered--but often turn out being better. God is the ultimate parent--one who truly knows what is best for us--even when we do not.

If demons are real, so are angels. If angels are real, so is God. God is very much real! Long story short, once I started to believe in God, the demon’s curse disappeared and when it was time for the demon to almost possess me, my family broke the pendulum that was used to communicate with the demon, and in a nick of time, saved my life. God saved me, even when I didn’t pray to be saved. I’m still currently dealing with evil spirits, but I know in the right moment of time, God will save me over again.

Your arguments are valid. There was a sermon I heard about prayer recently and I can’t remember the readings the argument was based on. I know I will butcher it, but the general theme was: “Prayer is to worship God and thank him, praying for particular outcomes is fine, but is of secondary importance.” God is not an ATM and since he knows all things that will happen, some future is set. Nothing says that prayer itself can’t be the a link in the chain of causality, and that seems perfectly reasonable to me. Take away: be less enthusiastic about praying for specific things in general.
