  • This is my tutorial on how to recreate some of the growls and synths in Skrillex's "First of the Year (Equinox)."
    I use FL Studio, Massive and the WOW filter for most of it.
    BUY FL Studio: affiliate.image...
    BUY Massive: www.native-inst...
    BUY WOW Filter: www.sugar-bytes...
    I realize that Skrillex uses FM8 for most of these growls but I unfortunately cannot afford that at the moment.

    Holy shit, bro. Heard about a second of growl 1 and hit subscribe. Best Skrillex growl tutorial I've seen, and I've seen a TON. Great work.

    Never said before but this tutorial was the most important one in regards to using massive when i started a few month ago. Thanks you mate for sharing these tips i have developed your ideas and made some really interesting original sounds. cant thank you enought!!!!

    just subscribed because you're the first after hours of searching that really showed me these ''growls'' and ''screams'' Skrillex and Adventure Club make. i really want to thank you :P

    Dude... wow. I just followed this tutorial, listened to the original, did my own little tweaks and added some more effects... and now.... I have an almost identical recreation of the drop from the original track. And ontop of that I just learned how to do meanass dubstep growl-basslines. THANK YOU :D

    Oh I will. I just haven't had time...been working on my debut EP and working a bunch. I've only finally "mastered" Massive a few months ago. I'll get there with FM8 but, FM synthesis is a lot more complex if I am not mistaken.

    Yes, and also the effect can be done without using WOW at all, it's just that WOW makes it a lot easier.

    so much love for this vid these techniques are all the building blocks for some kick-ass noises, once you can make these noises just experimentation with these techniques and some fx racks will have amazing results :) Thanks for this keep the vids coming :D

    Great tutorial, nice work on showing the starting points to get some real significant texture, I'm been doin growl bass for a few years now and i think the key here is the layeying of the wow filter and flanger, adds good stereo depth and warmth to an otherwise flat massive

    I actually did purchase it about a month ago. I agree that you shouldn't simply download something. I know the need to support these companies. When I first started using these I found them to learn. Once I could afford it, I purchased them. The same as my copy of FL Studio and my other VST's.

    fun fact, skrillex uses fm8 alot more than massive to make his weird sound

  • @ElliottStanleyMusic
    @ElliottStanleyMusic 11 лет назад

    One tip: Skrillex often uses a vocoder to make his basses. For example, the growl in the buildup and the drop is actually a simple patch vocoded to the chopped up vocals you hear in the buildup :)

    U didnt show us the voicing tab in massive! I tried and if u put on 2 unisono and monophon>legato triller it sounds more accurate to ur recreation!

  • @elitenick
    @elitenick  12 лет назад

    All of those extra tracks are because I am doing this tutorial inside my Skrillex - First of the Year project (since all of the FX channels are already set up and everything).

  • @elitenick
    @elitenick  12 лет назад

    First make sure you have the "Monophon" setting checked (under the Voicing tab). Then, place two separate notes together in the piano roll, BUT have one start slightly after the first one.

  • @elitenick
    @elitenick  12 лет назад

    Just Google "drum samples" or "drum breakdown samples" and you'll see what I mean. There's packs made of just stuff like that, that he most likely uses.
    Then what you do is when you place the sample in your track, you stretch it to fit (or make it less long) your song.

    I have a little hint for you with the Rise Sound ;)
    If you want to let it raise the pitch just use the Modulation 1 - 4
    Then apply it to the 1. Square under the Pitch at OSC1
    Just drop it to e.g. 12
    and then lower the second lvl button of the Modulation you have chosen to 0.
    If you play now a little bit with the decay button you can let every Sound you want raise and you choose how fast or slow ;)

    I'm talking about presets and custom sounds. Massive comes with some, but not all. That is why i want to see someone make cool interesting sounds with the default presets and sounds.

    If you don't know where the signal begins or ends, you'll never know what you're doing. But the root of the problem is creative sound. Many times you sit in front of a synthesizer with a sound in your head, but no matter how long you tweak the parameters you always get that nasally thin bleet. So I would further recommend recreating popular RI synthesized sounds, like horns, flutes, pianos, and strings. from the four basic waveforms. Tri/Sin/Sq/Pul/.

    This tutorial is fantastic and really helped me, I use Ableton but was able to apply the same effect chain as you and came out perfect. I might start to use FL again but I keeped having issues with my controllers so I had to switch back to ableton. I really liked how you covered alot of his synths and it sounds pretty damn close to it even though he uses FM8 for his monster growls. I thing you should tackle the porter Robinson and knife party son Unison and and cover the drop in that :)

    Sonny mentions in an interview that he uses FM8 for his monster sounds. I'm assuming that's what's lacking. Perhaps come back with some FM8 sounds? haha your fucking awesome dude keep it up.

    Great tutorial! If I may make suggestion for future tuts, play sound as you make changes so we can learn how each setting affects it! :) This especial helpful for people (like me) who don't have exactly same DAW and/or plugins so we can adapt to our setup. Thanks!

  • @elitenick
    @elitenick  12 лет назад

    I do on some sounds, just really depends on if I am adding sub-bass to it, or how "thick" the synth turns out to be.
    These could be a lot better, but I'm not gonna spend hours and hours trying to get them beautiful. I'd rather do that for my own sounds.

  • @elitenick
    @elitenick  12 лет назад

    Well, you could just apply 50% chorus and maybe automate some of the settings. The flangus isn't SUPER important to achieving the end sound, all it does is kind of add a widening effect in this case.

    After some VERY short Google searching, i have come to note that TPB has every plugin used in this tutorial, although that is the illegal method... duh... I have personally purchased all of the used plugins as well as many more (and NO I will NOT send out the installers or the SI/Reg files). Great tutorial. never been a fan ofSkrillix really, but I have always wanted to make something like his style to see if I could and I have concluded that with my p.o.s. Dell Inspirion 1525, I have. Thanks :)

  • @elitenick
    @elitenick  12 лет назад

    The flangus shouldn't make a huge difference in the final sound as long as your using the chorus settings in Massive as seen in the video. If it's still not working something else may be wrong.

  • @AeonFlexMusic
    @AeonFlexMusic 12 лет назад

    That's a broad command, you don't just "learn synthesis". Someone reading that comment would probably just get discouraged. I would recommend starting with
    A study and evaluation of Analog and Digital signal flow. Understanding the basics of signal flow within those instruments. Then FULLY understanding how that signal is affected by an ADSR env, Filters, LFOs. These things are critical in understanding when looking at any synthesizer

    Bit crusher does not add vowels, though. Adding Bitcrusher and removing the WOW filter makes it sound worse.
    Skrillex uses FM8, using the built-in options to change the vowels. I don't have FM8 nor do I have the knowledge in FM8 to do it the way he does right now.

    haha i know what he means :] i think he is talking about the env 1 which is attached to the noise oscillator in growl 2, you didn't explain that further, and the lfo8 which is attached to the ring modulation, and there is phase and position modulation too :S it's a shame you didn't explain this further, but it sounds awesome anyway, so i hope it's not a big deal :) don't mean to be annoying about it ofcourse, very nice tutorial!
