Jazz has my heart but then I remind myself to not get gear but write music with what I have 👍
1000% I have to remind myself every time lol
I've always been stuck between the look of a Jaguar and sound of Strat... when I found the Fender Sixty six it was perfect
I really like the pacing of this video and the way you quickly mix the playing of both so you can really hear the differences. (I personally think the Jag has the edge on tone, but it’s a tough call. Seems more versatile.)
I think I’d prefer a Jag with the shorter scale length. I love JM pickups and the tone, but Jag sounds cool and is much easier to play. I have short fingers and am disabled with chronic pain, so I’d prefer not fighting to play a JM.
Ideally, I’d like a short scale JM if I had the option. 🤓 👍🏻
Try using 8 gauge strings on a 24 inch scale guitar setup well. I bet that would play like butter
Prob not hard to find or custom order a jag pickguard retrofitted with JM pups tbh, you’d basically have a short scale JM but with the added strangle switch
@@Lomoholga2
Sounds sick but unfortunately the offset trem needs heavier tension to function properly
Have a custom HH Jazzmaster (I know it's blasphemous) that I threw Fralin Unbuckers, coil split wiring, locking tuners and a Mastery bridge/tremelo in. It's absolutely incredible to listen to/play with very stable tuning. The 36th Anniversary PAF/Super Distortion pickup set in the Cobain Jaguar are really good too.🤘
what is a Jaguire? never heard of it 🤨
I thought the same😂
Common North American pronunciation. He apologizes profusely. He meant to say Jag Yoo Ar to please the Brits’ sensibilities, or Jag War to please Ivy Leaguers.
@@SyntagmaStationmore like every human being who can read's sensibilities lol
Learn to speak propper, boyo. They ain't no I in it, duurr.
“Jag-wire” is surely an interesting way to sound out the letters J A G U A R.
“Jag-u-err” isn’t much better, though, limeys.
Worth checking out the Fender Jaguar Johnny Marr signature model which solves many of the issues associated with the Jaguar.
I recently bought a cv squier jaguar now knowing anything about it. Its an amazing guitar and my favourite now. So versatile, the best fender styled guitar to own.
Your playing is incredible. I’d bet you love some good ole 1970s fusion.
As far as tuning issues, I’m not sure where that’s coming from? I have a bunch of offsets and they don’t have any more tuning issues compared to any other guitars I own. Additionally, the controls really aren’t complicated at all, it baffles me how some may think that…they’re very easy once you spend a little bit of time with these guitars. I have a Johnny Marr Jag that I love, but generally Jags don’t have as much sustain and a are more plinky sounding by nature vs. a Jazzmaster. I find Jazzmasters more versatile than Jags, but a lot of that comes down to the player and individual styles.Ripping the rhythm circuit out is a big no no if you’re an offset traditionalist as many offset players are. It’s nice to have the option for more mellow sonic excursions. It can also be very useful for on/off sonic stutters and also to turn the volume off on the guitar with a flick of a switch.
Well said!
Keep the videos coming, hearing the tones and getting your opinion on playability is always nice.
Very good comparison! Complete and well made 👏
The bridge is not a design flaw. With sufficiently high string-saddle friction (string tension, string break angle) tuning is usually rock solid. Mustang-style replacement bridges address the strings sometimes popping out of the shallow string grooves slots in the vintage-style bridge with heavier playing. You mention the Cobain jag - it has mods (tuneomatic bridge etc) that reflect an earlier era when guitar techs did not understand how to set up the rocking bridge properly.
One hundred percent agreed. Changing the bridge also low key changes the sound of the guitar.
Both sound fantastic! I think I like the Jazzmaster just a tiny bit more. Maybe because of how it looks though.
As a long-time player, favoring Fenders with a Strat and 2 Tele's, I recently have been pining for either a JM or Jag so this excellent video is a great help. I only wish that you had played chords and arpeggios on each without effects so we could hear the natural tone.
Also, it's worth a tip of the hat to the guys that originally brought public awareness to each- the Ventures Bob Bogle for the JM and Beach Boy's Carl Wilson for the Jag.
Thanks for putting this together!
Jazzmaster 4 life babyyyy. Love the scale length, love the rhythm/lead circuit, love the pickups.
Back in the day, the jaguar was the most expensive fender guitar. 25% more expensive than a strat. The jazzmaster was also substantially cheaper. I own a mint 1973 jaguar, it’s a cool guitar
Amazing review/comparison, brother. Thank you.
I'd go with the Jaguar
This wasn't the Jaguar, it was the Jag-wire. Or did I hear that wrong?
Jagwire*
Great comparison! I like them both... the JM seems a little warmer and fuller sounding at times whereas the Jaguar can sound more trebly/sharper almost more wiry sounding if that makes sense. I find the short scale length of the Jaguar takes some getting used to. I bought the Squier 70s CV in Daphne Blue. With 9 Guage strings on it it was hard to play and doing bends on the high E string could cause it to want to come up and off past the edge of the fretboard. Had my buddy who's a real good tech and guitar builder give it a good set up (it needed it but for a sub $400 guitar I'm not surprised) and put 10s on it. Wasn't ready to jump to 11 Guage strings. It definitely has its own feel but nothing you can't get used to. I like it because it's different and unique. It has its own voice and it's cool looking and super comfy to play sitting down. I do feel it's more challenging to play than say my Gibson SG and it does force you to play differently, maybe more effort but I think that can be a good thing. Haven't played a nice JM yet but I know I would like it's 25.5" scale length.
I've played a Jazzmaster for 60 years. Long live The Ventures.
Nice!
I disagree with several statements made in this video and I have both guitars. Tuning stability of both guitars is good when set up properly. A neck shim or heavier strings might be necessary.
The controls are not complicated- switch in lead position, it's a regular guitar. Switch in rhythm position, it's a warm neck pickup tone with it's own volume and tone controls. Is that complicated?
The on/off switches of the Jaguar are a bit clunky until you get used to them, but then it's pretty easy. The "strangle" switch on the Jaguar cuts low end more than mids. Most people rarely use it, but it's useful when using the neck pickup.
It's pronounce Jag-war, not Jag-wire, ha ha!
I have Jaguar American Original 60s and American Jazzmaster Pro 2 and both are too awesome. Playing Jaguar more but Jazzmaster still feels to have still much to explore. Nicely different guitars. Jaguar more basic to play, riffs sound superb. Jazzmaster feel bit more sensitive to sound good. Chords sound massive and clean around 12th bar too. No issues with tuning. Perfect tremolo systems. But had to flip 2 screws in Jaguar to avoid E-strings to break. Liking both more than Stratocaster (the newest american ultra) which is still awesome., but quite clangy(?). Jaguar and Jazzmaster have more depth.
I have a CV and Player Jags. They are really great guitars. The CV has the wacky traditional controls and is just great for a vintage early-60s jangle. The Player HS is much easier to use and is really a smaller and simpler Strat that works really well.
Man I have those same guitars in black. Love them both, but I had to swap out the humbucker, and pots on the player series.
@@jordanpratt3821 I bet that turned out really nice. I'm very happy overall with the Player.
I love a Jazzmaster and wonder why they aren't my favorite every time I play one. Then I play the Jaguar and am immediately reminded why it is my favorite.
i love how the jazz master sounds but i like the shorter scale length and on the jaguar. what should i do?
I’ve always loved the the chrome accents on the Jaguar but prefer the scale length and tone of the Jazzmaster. That’s why at this point I only own a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster and a Squire 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster. Both of these Jazzmaster have their own distinctive tone.
I have the Kurt Cobain Jag and I absolutely love it🎸🤘🏻
@Jackie_Rosewood I had that one too! Great guitar!! I wish I had kept it! \m/ Zach
I bought the perfect (for me at least) jazzmaster, MIM blacktop made from 2010-2015. Humbucker at bridge, standard jazzmaster pickup at neck and no rhythm section also black pick guard on sunburst looks awesome
I’ll take that white Jaguar and enjoy playing some Beach Boys music
I have a jazzmaster jr from Japan. It’s a jaguar with Jazzmaster electronics. This should be gold standard. Jazz smooth plus short scale neck.
Nothing compares to a jaguar
Jazzmaster if I have to pick. Love the pickups.
I mean the jaguar is confusing kinda but once you watch like a 5 minute video on RUclips explaining it’s easy. As for the jazzmaster it’s genuinely not confusing at all, the switch is up? You’re in rhythm. The switch is down? You’re in lead. Lead circuit is a traditional electric guitar controls. Rhythm circuit is just the neck pickup with tone dampener to give it a more mellow, darker tone and it’s controlled by two roller pots, they’re pots just like in the lead but they’re roller instead of twist.
Also I understand not using the rhythm circuit but there’s a couple unique ways to use it. I have a JM Jazzmaster and they come stock with what amounts to p90s not traditional jazzmaster pickups so I put a SD antiquity in the bridge and left the JM in the neck and now I barely use the pickup selector, if I want a bright bell-like jazzmaster tone I stay on the bridge, if I want something a bit louder, hotter and importantly with fuzz, I’ll just flip up to the rhythm and get a really good fuzzy tone. You can also rewire the whole rhythm circuit to do other things, it’s really fun and unique. Like you can make it a phase switcher and use the roller pots as pots for the neck and use the lead pots for the bridge, akin to Gibson
If you like shorter scale lengths (like the Mustang) or super tight sounding strat-like pickups in a different offset package, then go for Jaguar.
If you want a whole different “thing”- or, i.e., something as far or farther apart to a strat than a tele is to a strat- or otherwise just like the classic fender scale length w/ an offset body, then go for Jazzmaster. I personally think the average Fender guitar player should get to know their teles, strats, and jazzmasters… b/c they all offer different things. The Jazzmaster was sadly overlooked for a long time, but when you’ve played one for awhile and are familiar with the other two earlier Fenders, you can kinda feel the evolution or progression with your hands and ears. So- in other words- if you already like teles just as much as strats for how they’re different, I especially would recommend trying out a Jazzmaster.
Never understood the complaints of jazzmasters being confusing. Ignore the rhythm circuit and it is just a telecaster control wise.
Jaguar is more visually pleasing. Personally I can get better tone from the jazzmaster
I own both. The Jaguar is my favorite for sure. Both have very minor mods to my preference though.
Those les pauls in the back look really nice, couldnt focus on the fenders
Can you avoid intonation problems by simply not using the trem?
IDEA : Let Fender make the surfmaster for the Jazzguitarists .😅
I always wanted a Jag....but either would be fun to have and play.... I have to say that Jazz Master is so sweet I am a sucker for tobacco sun burst...my first guitar was a tobacco burst Martin with F Holes..... never been able to replace it....life 😎 happens we have to sell to survive...But those pickups are so sweet... thanks
Nice comparison, although I drew the exact opposite conclusions lmao. Jaguar scale length is much more playable and traditional sounding fender single coils sound better to me.
that backing track is a banger
Jag-wire 🥴🤷🏼♂️
Let me be the cork sniffer to show up in the comments: the bridge is quite easy to address with replacement bridges and a quick set up. I agree that this should knock a few points off on both of them, but don't let this deter people from buying either.
I have one of each, and they're so much fun to play. I play my Jag the most.
Also, it's funny that you mentioned both models but with paired down controls: that literally was the American Pro 1 run of both of these guitars. Jon, you should seriously check out those on the used market, they will make you rethink your opinion on both models.
Bridge and Neck positions on the Jaguar are not matching your descriptions. By that I mean, when you're demoing the bridge pick up, the video shows the neck pick up switch is on in certain parts of the video.
I choose both
For what I already have and what I do?
Jazzmaster
Both are comfortable to play
Same body shape, but different neck
Jaguar or Jagwire
😂
Both are my favorite guitars anyways.
The Jaguar switch is a bass cut, not mids.
I know it is driving me nuts every time he says “Jaguire”. 😂
I'll go with the jazzmaster love the and the sound
What kind of music is he playing? Genre/ year specific if possible? I'm just picking up a guitar after decades of not playing and I really dig this style.
He made quite a good mix! I'd say fusion jazz, with some blues every now and then. But mostly he sounds like a skilled jazz player.
Thanks for the kind compliments. This particular backing track is a static minor chord that I am improvising over. I do like to mix a lot of styles - a fusion of jazz, blues, rock, and funk. Here' s some songs I'd check out if you haven't:
Miles Davis "So What"
Grant Green "Flood in Franklin Park"
Lou Donaldson "Snake Bone"
Wayne Shorter "Adams Apple"
Rollong Stones "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" around 3m mark
You'd probably really enjoy 60s/70s Soul Jazz and Funk. It had a huge influence on Rock at the time too.
If you want a roadmap for jamming over a static minor chord, I tend to live in the Dorian mode, using minor pentantonics as the scaffolding and blending in some chromatics, arpeggios, bends etc. I like wide open vamps because you can do a lot with them but I love that sound I described. The most famous example of this is Miles Davis' "So What." Into the 70s jazz evolved away from more complex chord changes to more open static type of vamps which left a ton of room for funky and soulful rhythms which influenced not only jazz but also rock. This was hugely influential on rock as well - If you listen to the Rolling Stones "Can't you Hear Me Knocking" it basically out of nowhere opens up into exactly this kind of static funky Dorian jam at around the 3:00 mark.
Thanks for watching and sorry for the book, just thought I'd share!
@@PlayandTradeGuitars I don't know if my previous comment went through so apologies if this is a repeat! Thank you for taking the time to break that down for me. Do you have any recommendations for books to learn blues, funk and jazz guitar? I'm looking through amazon and they have quite a large selection to choose from.
I once owned an original ‘63 Jaguar, and ‘65 Jazzmaster.(wish I’d never sold them, but being a monumentally STUPID kid at the time….hindsight is 20/20) Loved them both, but the Jag was my main #1 goto, the Jazz definitely had more case time despite being in NOS mint condition.
So you want the Troy VanLeeuwin Jazzmaster model. FYI it’s pronounced Jaguar not Jagwire
I would love a decent offset
I like the shorter scale Length but the Jazz master pick ups sound nicer to my ear …I really do wish I wasn’t such a complex wee guy 🙄😁
Dude just wants a normal guitar lol, these guitars aren't for you obviously. The switches and versatility of these guitars are why we like them.
0:00 wheezer
Jaguars are a beauty, but Jazzmasters are less thin and thrill sound
Who is Jack Wire?
Is there any difference between these two guitars if you are a finger style player?
I have never even held a Jaguar, but I have always liked the look of a Jazzmaster a little better.
Jaguar..
Yeah, I'm usually for the American made guitars but..... I'd go with that MIM Jaguar. It just sounds better to me.
This was a helpful video but could have been a lot more helpful. The sound comparisons started out great: Apple A/Apple B, Apple A/Apple B. Then it was like Apple A/Orange B, Apple A/Tangerine B, Apple A with Tangerine B actually still playing over Apple A, Fuzzy Apple A with Clean Grapefruit B playing a totally different riff, sigh. I often get the feeling with videos like this that the person decided which guitar they like better and are trying to convince others to like it better also.
After having a jaguar for a while, I realized I hate Fender's standards scale length.
is that a jazzmaster pro 2? the one in the video has a bound fretboard
I’m pretty sure it’s the vintage 2 since you mentioned the fretboard
I have a Jazzmaster. For me it's a like a slinkey strat. If that makes sense.
Is that a good thing personally I like a less tension feel is that what you are referring to?
Both
Jag-uire?
The one I really Wish for is the Kurt Cobain Jaguar. Some day it's mine.😉
Jazz Master for me!
Can you review the meteora in silver burst? It’s an offset
Would the Mastery bridge and tremolo replacements fix those problems.
Yeah, the Mastery is a great upgrade to these guitars.
I want both so the Squier Jagmaster!🤣🎸👍
If I had to? Jazzmaster because its sound is furthest from what I already have.
Jaguar
The Jaguar's nut width is too damn narrow for me.
The answer is both.
Sorry about the potentially sensitive reaction to your pronunciation but every time I heard Jag-WIRE, I wanted to scream.
Perhaps rename your channel to "Play and Trade Gui-Tires"?
JAGUAR
One time a Jag, never go back to Jazzmaster😃
In an era of superprocessors the size of our hands it puzzles me to hear about the "wacked" controls of a Jaguar.. come on man, it's not so difficult. Just stick to the lead circuit and a JM becomes a Telecaster, while the Jag can become 2 telecasters whether you engage the strangle switch or not. It's not rocket science.
Same here I’m constantly searching for sound. Sometimes the selector switch just doesn’t have what I need. Why would someone describe this as whacked?
I keep hearing Jaguire 😆
What amp did you use?
Fender '68 Deluxe Reverb Kemper Profile by M. Britt, with my custom settings. Thanks for watching!
What's the difference between a Jag-wire and a Jaguar...?😉😉🤣
What does the tone circuit/midcut do on the Jag?
It’s supposed to cut the higher frequencies but I don’t really hear a big difference
Great video. I just wish I could get behind the controls. :( I love how J Mascis and Thurston Moore make the Jazzmaster sound.
I own one of each that are Squiers.
05:51
I want to buy both because they arent the same
Jag-u-ar 👍😂
Went to GC and the kids there couldn’t help me decoding the controls. I expected to like the Jag more , wanted to like the Jag more with my preference on those single coils and an ease of play expectation about the shorter scale length,… but the Jazz felt better. Ultimately felt frustrated not really getting the controls. I picked up a Strat, and it never felt so simple, intuitive and accessible by comparison.
The JaG wIrE
Diluted in possibly the worst possible choice of effects, this could have been a great demo but instead it’s absolute fuzz shit.
Jag. Period.
Fender Jaguar
I have both and play both frequently. If I had to choose, I would probably choose the Jaguar for the plink.
Why do you say Jagwire???
Jaguyaire ? : )
