Fun fact: the subspecies of bison native to the US has the scientific name b. b. bison, which of course stands for: bison bison bison

That's a beautiful hunk of wood that you rescued from the fireplace, Tim! The undulating grain rings are what make it great, IMHO. Thank you for making all your interests and expertise seem so approachable, and the barriers to entry so low! Cheers!

American Bison are called buffalo because french trappers and fur traders would sell the hides as "Boeuf" (a catchall for all bovines) which is the same word used for cows and buffalo. They weren't cattle so english speaking settlers translated it to buffalo like the true buffalo that wasn't around. "Bison" was latin for aurochs, the wild cattle that were the ancestors of modern domestic cattle, so it's similarly the wrong name but it was selected for the scientific name so it gets academic precedence.

Good research, makes sense. I was going to say something like "the American Natives spoke a different language". But you said it better.

Say in a Birmingham accent... "What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison?
You can't wash your hands in a buffalo"...

There is one more tool you could use between the band saw and the flapper disk. It is an angle grinder attachment, a disk with chain saw teeth around its perimeter. It allows you to take off edges and corners faster than the flapper disk without the limitations of the band saw. Greetings from Australia.

    Hey Tim!
Bison in North America are believed to have been misnamed Buffalo by settlers who had lived in the westernmost bits of europe, where bison have been exterpated for a very long time. Smithsonian suggests 'Buffalo' was likely either a reference to the french 'Boeuf' or to 'buff' fabrics of the time, the former making more sense to me as the north american interior was mostly mapped by french fur traders. Wikipedia suggests it evolved from the early french name for the animals; 'Buffles', which may have evolved from the latin word used for wild ruminants; 'bufalus'
    Personally, I like 'buffles' :)

Lovely! I like to carve lots of little tiki heads myself, and you're right about keeping it simple. It's so easy to get bogged down with all the unnecessary details that end up ruining the carving in the end when they don't turn out anyway. I'll probably never be a master, but I love doing it and that's what counts.

Was wondering how long before an angle grinder made an appearance as they seam to be used just about everywhere. Big thumbs up for how it turned out and for your thinking how this bit of tree could be used. Safe travels. Ken.

Lovely carving - you have an eye for it. I did notice that you are using sandpaper. Which is well enough, but it clogs quickly and creases in the wrong places and is generally unpleasant to use (IMO). I've started to use Abranet, which is basically abrasive on a kitchen scouring pad and it works brilliantly because the dust just falls through it and it can conform to the surface you are sanding without creasing. You can buy packs with a range of grits for not too much EUR. (No connection, just a happy user.)

Avoid /Needless/ details... Details are an important thing, but only important details are actually important. That's why they're called the important details. Its right there in the name.
Before adding a detail to something, ask whether it is important or what it will add to the finished piece. If you cannot justify that adding a detail will add to the value of the finished piece, then you should be questioning why you would consider adding it to your project.

No idea why americas call Bison Buffalo, bu they perplexingly invented something called buffalo wings. renamed football and than used football for rugby and measure in everything but the metric system. they are strange folk.
As for the carving its pretty much dependent on what the carver wishes to do?
some people ravel in tinkering with piece of wood for days weeks even to make it perfectly alighned wih their vissions some prefer to keep it more naural. both are valid i feel as the joy comes from th shaping of one object to something pleasing to look at if not nexcesarily entirely different. a lump of wood into art in this case.
