Saint Lucia | Hiking Gros Piton (St.Lucia)

The best way to make the most of your visit to Saint Lucia is to spend time both on the northern and southern part of the Island.
Hiking Gros Piton was one of the major reasons I decided to visit Saint Lucia. Let’s talk about the hike. My wonderful driver who I had met on my arrival in Soufriere took me to the Welcome center and I made payment for the hike, 50 dollars as a foreigner. I got assigned my guide Nyim. Before heading on the trail, Nyim explained the trail to me using a model, what to expect, the level of difficulty, resting points, etc.
The hike usually takes 2 hours to get up and 2 hours to get back down, this may vary depending on the individual and level of fitness. The trail is very steep as I would later learn with rocks and steps along the way which made it extremely challenging to climb. The level of difficulty is strenuous.
Nyim allowing me to walk my pace was the main game changer for me making it up to the top and back. It’s definitely a challenging summit hike but you rewarded with stunning views of the land and sea.
About the Pitons: They are listed under world heritage sites. You can find them along the Western coast of St. Lucia these majestic peaks of Gros Piton and Petite Piton rise dramatically out of the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean. Gros Piton and Petite Piton are an iconic symbol for the adventurous nature of St. Lucia Island.
This is not an easy stroll along a nature trail. This is a difficult summit hike up 2200 vertical feet. At the end of the hike, you can get some ice cream and light refreshments on site.
Be sure to sign the summit register and enjoy the rest of your time on the Island
Overall, I would highly recommend the Gros Piton Nature Trail hike.

Do I understand correctly that you simply paid the $50 at the entrance and was assigned a guide at the entrance? I will be there next week and would like to know if I should book the a tour guide before arriving?
