Not 2 hours ago I had a lady ask me if I was hungry. I was just standing by my truck smoking. Homeless is everywhere and she thought I needed help. Bless her.
For years I thought there were few if any homeless in the UK. Then I visited in both 2022 and 2024. I found out there are people who “sleep rough” there in every big town and city. I saw them in Bath, Liverpool and Edinburgh. The difference is they are not allowed to set up tent cities on the streets. They just come out after dark most places. There are big cities in the US that have similar laws like Miami and Dallas where public tent camping is illegal. Once a city allows permanent encampments everything gets out of control.
I agree that many of the homeless are mentally ill and/or drug/alcohol addicted. But, there are others, regular people, like me, who worked my entire life & had a normal home & lifestyle. Then in my 50's a back injury made working impossible. During the over two years of fighting with social security disabilty for the benefits I paid into as an employee, I ran out of money & lost my home. I would work if I could. I don't do drugs other than medical prescriptions. But, now I have horrible credit & no one wants to rent to me. Once you're knocked down it can be very hard to get back on your feet. My income is half of what it used to be and rent in Sacramento, CA is high. I know this is a long rant, sorry, but seeing comments like every homeless person wants to be homeless, is lazy, or is an addict is unfair to a growing population of "working class" people, familes some with children, who are facing circumstances beyond their control. Have some empathy. But for the grace of God, it could be you.
The USA has challenge w/ homelessness and gets a lot of bad publicity, but on a per capita basis it's not above the mean on a global standard. According to Habitat for Humanity other first world nations such as Germany, France, the UK, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand have higher rates of homelessness per 10,000 people.

Here is the honest truth about homelessness in the US. The homeless here want to be that way. I have offered food and work opportunities to people. They don’t want it. They want money. Money for alcohol and drugs. I understand that most are mentally I’ll and dependent on drugs. I can’t help them. I do have compassion and empathy for them but I’m not funding their habits. I don’t know what the answer is but they have to assist in their own rescue. That’s my opinion

They may search to insure no drugs enter. That may keep some away. There are over 5,000 homeless. There just isn’t anywhere for many to go. It’s also illegal to sleep anywhere in public. People have to sleep. Plenty of vacant land could be turned into camp sites.
Many of the idle that advertise "will work for food" ALWAYS seem to refuse a job offer... it's impossible to fine one that will exchange a days labor for pay. The majority of those sitting on the street will only accept cash "help"!!
Where I live in Detroit. the homeless sleep during the day because its so cold at night, many have died while sleeping. So they move around and walk at night to keep body temperatures up.
I can confirm those San Francisco and Sacramento ones. I had a homemade encampment down the street from my condo and one guy across from my condo. I will never forget when I visited San Francisco and the guy fussed at us for walking on the sidewalk and he was trying to sleep.
These cities have a large homeless population because they offer more resources to the homeless. Not every city has a homeless shelter, or even a food pantry for that matter. So when somewhere has multiple homeless shelters, food pantries, ECT thats where they go. Also, in some cities/towns it is illegal for homeless people to ask people for money, as many localities have ordinances banning "panhandling" or aggressive solicitation in certain areas. Sleeping on public property is also banned in areas as well.
If the biggest social welfare country in the world can`t solve the problem, its not an easy problem to solve anywhere: France has an estimated 300,000 homeless people, which is double the number in 2012 and triple the number in 2001. The greater Paris region accounts for 44% of the homeless population in France.
That should be a mortgage payment towards a mid-sized house not rent for a 1 bedroom. That is just insane, I don't know how some property owners justify it.

I don’t really believe anyone chooses to be homeless. It’s really sad but people who are homeless are usually addicts, very poor or have serious mental disabilities which should never happen here in America. It upsets me so much that our government takes such good care of illegals but not our precious veterans who have serious mental issues or drug addictions because they just want to numb everything. I’m praying this will all change soon here in the USA and around the world. There’s absolutely NO excuse for homelessness, especially here. It breaks my heart that we don’t take care of those who fought for our freedom but come across the border illegally and we’ll help you live like a movie star! Unbelievable!!!💔

Reality is the elites own everything and in turn make it so that they get richer and the result is everyone else stay just above broke or poor. Even if they don't mean to effect everyone else, everything they do effects everyone else.
Yes trickle down economics was a flat out scam, the wealthy have only gotten wealthier and income for middle class only stagnated or declined, the poor became even more poverty stricken. And that's also the time when the budget for mental health services was gutted. Later, add in a wave of opioid addiction (that's combined with tranq now coming from china) and how are people the least bit surprised?
This is one of the richest countries in the world. No one should have to be homeless. It shouldn't even be an option. I think maybe one reason they sleep in the daytime is because they can get attacked and their stuff gets stolen at night. It's very sad isn't it.

You are right I’ve heard them talk about which shelter didn’t make them follow rules or if they’d rather find a spot to sleep somewhere.

Same thing is currently happening in Honolulu. Around 5k homeless on the island of Oahu.
