Nice, Juliet999. Interesting that you like this, since other Russians keep complaining about it since the actors do not look "authentic" Russian. I'm not Russian, but I know the original Russian version of the 1960's was of course the best. But the 15-hour TV miniseries by BBC in the 1970's,and the 1956 movie (Audrey Hepburn) were fine too. Still, if this new version can introduce new fans to Leo Tolstoy's Voina i Mir, why not? The great love of Natasha and Andrei just shines here.
Ah, now I understand. Some of the ACTORS who appeared in the Russian version were banned during the Stalin regime. It is good that they got cast in this movie. Now they have a masterpiece that will forever define their careers as actors.
I myself think the Soviet version is the best, because it is obviously authentic, and is more complete than other versions (except the long 1970's BBC version, 16 hours, with Anthony Hopkins as "Pyotr No-ears", I mean, Pierre Bezukhov.) But your point is classic. The actors there BECOME the characters, not just actors playing the characters. I don't see Ludmilla Savalyeva, I see Natasha. Vyacheslav Tikhonov is really Andrei. Bondarchuk was a bit old, but he still is good as Pierre.
Maybe, but if fans who do not know about Tolstoy's masterpiece will be interested in reading it, and see other versions - including Bondarchuk's Russian version which is obviously the best - then maybe this miniseries has some value. Of course, if someone asks me, which version must he or she first see? My answer is READ the book, then watch the Russian version. But yes, why did they cast a blonde as Natasha? She's OK, but there are so many beautiful, talented brunette actresses around.
Stalin banned the Russian version? What version was that? Stalin was no longer around in 1968, right. The novel is one of the greatest of all humankind's creations.
