Just to state it a little stronger, only check the oil level when the bike is at full operating temperature. Put it on the center stand or hold it straight up during the test (not on the side stand). Run the bike until the fan comes on, then you can check the oil level. Otherwise you risk overfilling it because the top tank won't have all the oil in it.
Thank you for the video. A suggestion for catching the oil from the filter -- I cut a plastic tennis ball container that hold three balls in half (length wise) and notched the end for the spout. It fit perfectly.
Thanks for the video. i just bought a 2006 F650Gs with 25,600 miles and it runs strong. I look forward to changing the oil with the info you supplied. Greg, AKA lubricator,, in Sacramento
rode BMW since 1978../2-R1100RS...have a '97 F650..an about 9 or 10 other model's...well done vid...I was a Service manager for 12 years for BMW Motorcycles...really nice vid!
AWESOME video, thank you! I have a new to me 2009 G650GS. Got it last November, rode it maybe 30 miles, and just got it out a couple days ago. My nearest BMW shop is a bit over an hour away and mostly open when I'm at work. I may look online for the kit. I'm still a newish rider (rode a bit when I was 20, just got the endorsement over a year ago). The BMW is my 3rd bike in a year and a half (rode a 250 Suzuki for 1200 miles, got a 'big' bike, Honda Shadow Spirit of 750, but it's too short and too loud, I love the BMW!).
I have the same bike, same year! I'm also a newish rider, and this is my first bike (got it a couple years ago). Want to learn some basic maintenance. Did you find the kit and do your own oil change? I'm going online now :-)
Great video, it has now given me the confidence to do even more on my bike. Scared myself by thinking over-tightened sump/drain plug due to a collection of new oil film on it over next few days, until I realise I spilt some when filling header tank and it took a few rides to travel down and gather on the lowest point of the engine!
St RUclips! I learned how to fix my bicycle here, how to swim faster, how to speak English fluently how to..... And of course how to change oil in my BMW! That's really amazing if you think about it.!! Thanks for the greak video ❤
@@Ruacasa but he's talking about the upper tank I think, not the pan. I think I'll try it right now, side stand for upper tank then center stand for the pan
Awesome DIY, thanks! I just purchased a 2004 F650 GS Single which has been standing for little over a year with 15,000km (9320 miles) on the clock. It was last dealer-serviced in 2011 on 10,000km (6213 miles). Everything still runs fine, but for peace of mind I will be replacing the engine oil, brake fluids and thoroughly clean and inspect all the other components. What oil do you recommend I use? Synthetic / Non-Synthetic? Grade?
Nice vid and good job pointing out some of the fine details. I just bought a 2006 and there seems to be some kind of noise in the engine while under load in the 2700-3300 rpm range that I suspect might be the clutch. But I'm not sure yet.
Thanks for doing an excellent video! You've made me forget about a F650 GS...too much crap to pull off just for a simple oil change maybe I'm overreacting cause I sure like the bike.
I’ve had both this bike and the vstrom 650 , both same vintage. Vstrom was better bike imho primarily for stuff like this and just cost of maintenance in general
Thanks, great tutorial,as always..love my 04 f650 gs......great little bike...but want to learn how to service and repair it myself as much as possible. Mechanics are expensive.
Every time I see one of these F650 oil changes I wonder if it would not be easier to just suck the oil out of the reservoir. I know this is a three year old video but still it makes me wonder.
I've got a 2005 F650GS Dakar ABS and my battery won't stay charged, I figure the problem has to be with the Generator/Alternator/Regulator/Rectifier but I'm trying to find a video showing how to pinpoint and fix the problem. The same thing happened years ago on another bike I had and I had the generator sent off and rebuilt for about $250.
I have a question for anyone who has the knowledge to answer. Up here in Fairbanks the local dealership had their BMW mechanic go south for the winter. That’s a pretty typical thing for such a cold climate. Should I change my oil before the deep-freeze or in the spring when My mechanic returns from his migratory route and I haul it in for its 12,000 mile scheduled service?
One of the best DIY videos out there. Keep up the good work. One question though: In the BMW oil filter kit there are 3 washers and one O-ring. O-ring for oil filter cover, large copper washer for sump plug. What are the remaining 2 tiny washers for? I haven't been able to figure this out yet, after 2 oil changes on my G650GS Sertao.
I have a 2001 gs I took the fairings off of it to have them wrapped and it ended up sitting 4 years outside. I cleaned her up and put her back together and she just wont idle right I cleaned the injectors, replaced damaged fuel lines etc. I still cant get it to idle right with out dying any suggestions?
Thanks! Been looking for a G650GS oil change video for my wife's 09 G650GS. Did not realize the single F650GS is the same engine....more or less. Know of anything special on a G650GS I should be aware of?
Could you please me part number for that oil filter? I have a 2003 BMW R650CS having a hard time making sure to order the right one. Thanks greetings from Nashville Tennessee
Hey, love these vids. Clear and direct. AND... I have the very same bike. So, very useful. QUESTION: MY bike won't start after doing my first oil change. Exactly as shown in this vid. And f650.com forum instructions. Has anyone else had this problem? Any common newbie mistakes I may have made?
Hey thanks for your quick reply! Yeah it isn’t showing side stand kill switch symptoms. Not even revving. Just click. And, yes - I charged the battery to full overnight. I’ll look for loose wires/connectors again.
That is some great info - thanks! What do you think of using an oil extractor pump, instead of all of the fairing and reservoir disassembly, for the oil tank on top?
Thanks a lot. I used your other video today to change the coolant, got halfway through changing the oil and realized I don't have a socket big enough for the oil drain plug. What size is that socket? For some reason, I can't find the size in my Haynes manual.
+14wntr I'm going to answer my own question for others in the same situation. I found the answer on a user forum, so I'm not the only one wondering. It's 24mm 6 pt.
Is still someone here? Got a model 2003 and I want to change every fluid before riding a lot with it. But the plug is a plastic one which I can't figure out how to open. Seems need a special tool. :( Thanks for all info, will help a lot for my oil change, once I figure out how to open 😂
Hi there! im having trouble on my 2002 single dakar bmw F650GS the steering lock jammed to the left and im not unlock it,i put some lubricant and now the key turns and only activates the park bulb
it sounds like something broke in the lock. You will need to take it apart and figure out what gives. If you have a spare key you should try that first
The F650GS two cylinder (798cc) was only the 2009 until 2011 model years if I'm not mistaken. During those years, the single cylinder model (650cc) was a G650GS.
This is a little bit off the topic, but I could use some expert advice. The tail light on my 2006 F650 GS is loose and it seems to be an issue with this type of bike. I have checked and carefully tightened the applicable nuts. The tail light assembly is poorly designed and the slightest bump on the road causes it to "flutter". Can anyone help me with this problem?! HELP!!
+gf291162 Sorry it took so long to answer this. For some reason it was placed in the spam folder... My guess is that you need to replace the mounting assembly. Maybe someone else will chime in?
7 years passed, but it's still invaluable. Will go and change my oil filter in half an hour. Thank you for making this.

Thanks for Uploading. I'm new to BMW. Looks like it takes easily twice as long to change the oil, as compared to the bikes I had before.

Many Thanks sir! Great video - buying a 2005 F650 GS soon so will no doubt be hitting you up for more info!
next spring i want to try to do it by myself :) i've seen the video without the audio but you make it so easy :) thx
I always place the bike on the sidestand when draining the oil tank, saves some work :)
Full drain occurs on center stand. The pan is not sloped to the kick stand.

***** do you have slink on where to get one as its near impossible to buy for a 2014 G650Gs ?

lol...never call a BMW Technician a "mechanic"..especially a Master tech..they don't take it well!!
Thank you. Great informative Video. Its giving me some inspiration and confidence to Save a bit of money and do it myself.
Just picked up one of these bikes- thanks for the info
Dont take off the oil tank !!! just lean over the bike and oil will drop out !!!
Hi, Please could you show me where the oil pressure switch is on my FS650CS and how to replace it. Many Thanks for your excellent video.

+TrueBlogge777 Great info. Thanks!

Great video. Just a question, did you warm the bike to its service temperature? It's in order to make the oil more liquid.
It is always a good idea to warm it up to operating temp first. The oil will flow easier for sure.
Cool video... What weight oil do you use??
Good work, greetings from Germany
I use non synthetic 20/50

If not in a hurry can you let drain for a day or two and get all the oil out?? Without having to take apart??
I have never tried that
Please say the tool size of the torx or Allen screws and sump hex!
I don't know why you undo and tilt the engine oil filler tank, why not just undo the oil drain plug....?
Thats exactly what I was thinking. I mean, all that stuff is connected, so yeah, it might take a little longer to drain, but saves removing panels.
When you change the oil filter ,you put 2,5l ,is that right?
Handy vid. Just about to do mine. Some thumping tunes too
An old school raver no doubt!

Which oil should I use? What's the better? Tks for the video.
+Marcelo Ferreira I go with whatever the book calls for.
Hey, nice video.
I have a question: do you have any idea why the oil smells gas?
I have the same model.
Thanks
Your injector may be leaking down and contaminating the oil. Run some cleaner through it to see if that helps.
@@kirksmotorrad Thank you for your advice.
I'll try it an see what's happens .
¿synthethic oil would be a good option for this bike? I heard synth oil causes the clutch plates to go bad ¿anyone has had a problem?
