i'm not sure he is really underrated, it's just that his music is not for all, you need to be tuned to its sublime beauty, you need to feel and accept the blissful pain in it, his immense talent and technique has always been meant to the service of his powerful heart. So, this is difficult, you have to deserve it.
Then, if you haven't already done so Scott F., you must check out video of the 1981 "Live at Montreux" concert. It is presented here on RUclips in several segments that cover virtually the entire performance. My personal opinion ranks it higher than this Nottingham presentation. I don't know whether its the staging, lighting, camera angles and shot editing, or the quality of the sound recording (I'm neither technician nor expert in those fields), but this performance just doesn't seem to convey the same energy as Montreux - 1981. “Mike Oldfield - Montreux 1981 - Ommadawn 1/3” is the title of one segment--I find that it is now blocked in my country (USA)--I hope you are able to view it. Of all the Mike Oldfield performances I’ve watched here on RUclips, “Tubular Bells II (Live in Edinburgh castle) 1992” is my personal favorite. Mike has grown older by then; the music mellower and more orchestrally layered. I find it suits my present tastes quite well. Edit: In 2023, another user informed me that the link I provided to the live Tubular Bells II concert did not work in Germany; and I found it no longer working in USA either. I found a more recent upload from a different source that does play in the USA. Rather than provide a link again, I just urge any who are interested to use the search function to seek “Tubular Bells II (Live in Edinburgh castle) 1992” from their location.

Section from 6:00 is amongst Oldfield’s best improvisory performances in his life. Simply heart stopping, with 7:43 and 7:58 vibratos indescribably beautiful.
I remember taping this off the tele years ago, I was probably about 13, so great to see it again. The Ommadawn section is brilliant, so different from the original but great in its own right
Mike Oldfield has had many fine female singers on stage with him over the years. I sure miss Maggie Reilly though! None of the other voices have possessed the same beautiful tone and bright clarity in my opinion.
Best composer in the world. Period.
Platinum intro is just out of this world! To me, Mike is hands down the best guitarist ever. And an amazing composer!
This Man must come from the outer Space, I cannot understand his talent of a genius.
Mike Oldfield, Maggie Reilly, Morris Pert, Mike Frye, Tim Cross. You guys rock.
Don't forget Rick Fenn (the second bass/guitar player). ;)
Tim Cross passed away. Petty a fantastic musician passed away
No words, a mixture of tears and pleasure. appalling performance, why Mike is so underrated?
It is truly one of this worlds greatest mysteries.Well, he is not underrated in this home at least.

I agree!!!!

Think you might want to look up the meaning of 'appalling'!
@@Mixxathon Not underrated in this my home either.

That intro to Platinum still sends chills down my spine. Oustanding
Mike was in top form here.
Holy cow...this is one brilliant performance...BRAVO!!!!

AMEN!!!! I must have listened to this part of the concert a billion times now. Peak of Oldfields guitar playing. My favourite live performance of his.
Just awsome. The best composer.

monstrueuse performance! Mike au top de son jeu.

You're so right. None other can touch Maggie.
Even with the sound off, and watching only his right hand technique, Mike is recognisable from others by a country mile.
Felicidades.
Oldfield is up there with Page, Howe, McLaughlin, Holdsworth and Fripp. Godlike!
that start,,,wow,,, could listen t that all night
1:00 in and we're already hearing sublime melodies
BRUTAAALLL, UNA DE LES MILLORS FORMACIONS QUE MAI HA TINGUT... + R.I.P. ALS QUE JA HAN TRASPASSAT....
Yes Mike Oldfied is a Brütal Legend. ;)
Maravilloso. Vaya pedazo de musicos
toda una JOYA, saludos.
Got a feeling that *this* tour might have been the best one to catch him live... (age dependent, I certainly could not have!)
SUPERB !
Not often one sees two drummers in one band. Good performance all the same.
RIP Tim Cross (Keyboards) and Maurice Pert (Drums) :(
The Ommadawn bit is deadly !

As a guitar player, i am DYING to know what gear & just how Mike achieved the tone at the opening of this video😃👏👏👏👏👏
😊😊😊
Solo from 5:58 is impossibly brilliant.
👏👏👏👏
VHS memories.
Suena bien
07:24 the Guitar.
does anyone know what song is playing during the 12 minute mark?

Wish I was there... I did go to the Montreux-like concert in The Hague and Nijmegen, but not this one, alas.
VIDEO SOUNDS!
Would love to know what the venue was at Nottingham?
The person who edited and shortened the concert should be put in prison......
Can someone please tell me who is the gorgeous woman singing in this clip?
I think it's Maggie Bell
Thank you Peter. ☺
It's Maggie Reilly - lovely voice!
maggie reilly the best
Maggie Reilly. She also sang later on Mike's hits "Moonlight Shadow" (1983) and "To France" (1984).
Too bad this is so shrotened, is there a full version somewhere? :)
Meseriasul face diferenta ...just do it ...👍
Which nottingham venue was this at?
According to tubular.net Mike performed at Theatre Royal.
Not fluid but a fine melodic player nevertheless!
In French, really sorry: Pitoyable..
