That animation was so good! And honestly, looking at everything that went wrong, from his car breaking out at that crazy angle to the armco giving in and the roll hoop pivoting him to come to rest in such a bad place... It's like every safety measure implemented since 1994 (the monocoque, the HANS, the halo, the new suit) worked to counter that and save him, until, in the end, it came down only to his strength of will. It's like Lauda, Senna and Bianchi stood over his shoulder as guardian angels to give him a chance.
The driver would have been decapitated had it not been for the Halo. The guardrails need to be constructed so that the car cannot go under them. Maybe soft walls like at NASCAR could be useful for this.
Yep, it would have gone something like this. Ok, I`ve put the fire out Mohammad, he looks well baked, you take his helmet off Muhammad. What helmet, hang onamo, where`s his head!

That was a 53G crash fellas. Fifty-three times the pull of gravity. Equally incredible he REMAINED CONSCIOUS. Even with the halo - he should not be with us.
According to Wikipedia the all time record a human has survived was an estimated 200G crash also in a race car. I forget the details though. Absolutely mind boggling to even conceive how that could be survivable.
The halo saved his life 100 percent because it protected his head from getting the full force of the impact with the guardrail which would have knocked him unconscious and he would have burnt to a crisp. I used to hate it honestly but now I have respect for it. But I still think its not perfect because it could trap the driver in certain situations.
@@ivank.9525 In that exact same race, Stroll flipped upside down and was able to get out easily due to the shape. It's lower than the Engine cover so it won't obstruct exiting the vehicle, even when upside down.
It's mental. I'll be honest, I was against the halo when it was introduced in 2018. I felt like it looked disgusting, and I thought that the chances of it saving a driver from a piece of debris (like massa in 2009) were very slim, and even massa himself said it wouldn't have saved him. And this had been enough evidence my irrational past self to believe that the halo wouldn't save a driver, and that it wasn't worth the horrible things it did to the looks of the car, not to mention that it spelled the end of open cockpit racing. However, what I hadn't thought about was accidents like this one, or an entire car hitting the driver's head like Leclerc in 2018. And it didn't take too long to get used to it, either, and now when I look back at pre-Halo era cars, I think "Christ, did those guys really drive those cars?". Now that it's saved so many lives, it's time to stop moaning about the (not actually too bad) things it does to the aesthetics of the car.
It also saved Tadasuke Makino from Nirei Fukuzumi’s Arden in Barcelona 2018 in F2. Fukuzumi’s car climbed up on Makino’s Russian Time, and brushed against the intake. Then it brushed along the halo, before falling off and sliding into the wall.

This is true. I very well remember his time in the states, as a race commentator, being very vocal about car, driver & track safety issues. And agreeing with him 100%.
Jackie Stewart has never forgotten how this day of 1973 october the 6th died his friend and team partner François Cevert at Watkins Glen (USA) and fought all along his life, after finishing his race career, to improve security to share pilot's life. As someone who's finishing a mechanical engineering baccalaureate, I have to say, I thought this was made for and by an actual investigation. This is insane!
I’ve said more than just years of technology development in these racers was protecting him. Also gives a glimpse into how he survived the 56 G’s from the impact. With the car spinning and tearing apart, he would have likely taken the G forces front to back thru the chest. Similar to pilots and astronauts in their centrifuges. He took them while in the spin of the cockpit, which would have helped shed G forces. Never again in 1,000 repeats would a driver walk away from that. Hope he bought a couple of lottery tickets. All the luck was on his side. And a copilot on his shoulder.

excellent animation and level of detail! Halo did it's job. and more importantly, the HANS device kept him awake and alert ready to escape from the crash.
There's an interview with Sky he did where he mentioned that he tried climbing out many different ways before the final escape. What I never realised before that is that he actually couldn't see upwards because of the helmet. He had to try and hope that he can get through that gap.
He just had a 53G impact and probably disorientated. It's astonishingly amazing that he was able to gather himself and find a way out of that fireball hell.
For me, in order of "appearance" the security systems that saved Romain are these: 1. The whole Survival Cell 2. The HALO (that's now part of the survival cell, but an crucial part of it in this case) 3. The HANS 4. The Headrest 5. The Helmet 6. The Nomex underwear and the whole fireproof race suit, gloves and socks. 7. The Medical Car, that arrived just seconds after the crash. Regards
I get goose bumps seeing how fast that car was going during that crash. Knowing the FIA safety measures helped him survive. F1 is the pinnacle of human and car interaction. I am so glad he not only survived but will race again...
what really shocked me was how quickly he could escape from that position... they seem to struggle every time they have to get out in a normal situation!
All in all a very luck guy. Super glad he is still with us. I was very critical of the halos but I changed my opinion before this incident. Lifesavers.
@@Mat-in6gy Not necessarily right behind there, but near it is equally terrifying that nobody knows if the car can spin uncontrollably to the marshall after crashing the barrier.
@jameshisself If I remeber correctly, the other side of that access road was also covered by guardrails. I'm wondering what might have happened if the halo and the roll hoop were one safety structure and this airbox another crash structure that would break away on an impact. And thus just slowing the car down some more in these circumstances instead of acting like a solid hinge, which, if the middle guardrail hadn't deflected the movement, might as well have sent him up and around into a sort of cartwheel motion.
Danke für diese Demo zum Verständnis. Der hat wirklich wahnsinniges Glück gehabt und etliche Engel. Schön das der Rennsport um einiges sicher gemacht wurde und weiterhin wird.
Man that halo is tougher than I thought and truly miraculous he not only wasnt injured by the impact but able to stay conscious and escape the car, guardrail, and flames.
Outstanding animation! It doesn't need to look photorealistic to illustrate every detail of what happened. Thanks for making this! This crash seems to illustrate a vulnerability in the ARMCO barrier. The rails are attached to each other, even after the post is destroyed. Had they been attached only to the post, it seems to me the rail segments would have broken without needing the halo. It's when the rail segments don't break but the lower and middle rails part enough to let the car through that the Koinigg/Cevert-type fatalities occur. The halo saved Grosjean (and numerous other drivers now - I think it's a godsend), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep trying to improve barrier safety. If the ARMCO post is gone, the barrier becomes three sharp blades that are no longer connected. Allowing the segments to separate once the post is gone should eliminate that danger. It eliminates a level of containment, of course, but had the middle rail segment not been separated, the force dynamics through the car would have been very different. Other types of cars might be vulnerable to that scenario. In fact, had the top rail segments separated when the post was destroyed, Grosjean would likely have escaped the fire more quickly. The top rail became a very real trap hazard. I hope smarter minds than mine have looked into this. I remember the fiery bloodbaths of the 70s, and it's been nice these past decades, seeing accidents as something drivers should be able to walk away from nearly every time, and they do. This accident was horrifying, and the first time I saw it, I already knew he walked away. It was still horrifying! It's a horrifying reminder that we can't stop trying to make things safer. Even with the halo, the survival cell, the advanced fuel containment, and all the fire protection, he could have died in this one. His escape was partly obstructed by an intact top rail that didn't have to be there, and I hope FIA took note of that.
If this had happened in the 70s,Grosjean's family very likely would have been receiving a phone call from the crew chief telling her to go the hospital morgue and identify what's left of her husband. This happened to the family of racing driver Francois Cervert,he was driving a training lap when he lost the car on a bend, crashed through a barrier in excess of 110mph. Cervert was killed instantly-his body split from neck to hip.
Just one point, Romain said that when he came to get out the first time he did notice that the steering wheel was missing. How could this have happened? Very well put together, epic job fella 💋
THROUGH the freaking guardrail man not even being propelled over it. Through the guard rail cutting the car in half and him being protected all the way by the halo. Truly didn’t understand how much the halo contributed in saving his life until seeing this 3D animation. It probably saved him from getting knocked out too so that he was able to pull himself out in the end. Amazing stuff.
This is what can happen if you try to wall-glitch. Sometimes you get into a magical realm of invisible boxes where the game would appreciate you not going, and sometimes your car rips in f'ing half. :P
Wow, great 3D animation, very illuminating in what happened. Thanks! I'm wondering if they should make the t-cam structure more fragile, because if that was dislodged right away, the safety cell would have rolled further away, and Grosjean would have been able to climb out right away, and maybe would have not been surrounded by flames.
I feel the split barriers like this (two horizontal strips) are dangerous. As we saw, if the bottom splits the car can continue under the top barriers really stressing the halo. Perhaps it would be better if the top and bottom trips were joined with bolts, or just machined as single pieces of metal that hopefully have a lower chance of coming apart.
I understand your thinking, but a solid object would be a deal worse, I think. And it's possible he could've slipped under _it,_ too, likely trapping him in the car. I think a better way would be for the rails to have a little more give, absorbing the energy instead of redirecting it back into the car (as would happen if he hit a wall... which is what a single-piece rail would become). I dunno. I'm just glad I don't have to think about such things, having the drivers' lives in my hands.
They should make the top part of the barrier breakable and the lower part more sturdier. That way whenever that happens again grossjean wont get wedge inbetween.
even when his head is not squished, he would probably be unconscious, like Massa in Hungary where the spring landed in his face... he wouldnt be able to get out of the car...

Rumour has it that the halo has grown on him now.....
If the halo wasn't there we probably would have seen his head on the other side of the guard rail
It's good to know that Grosjean has a conscience. It was also good he remained conscious in the aftermath of the crash.
If that happen 3 years ago, someone must be dead and headless
It happened at Watkins Glen... Helmuth Koinigg went under the gardrail. Just like Grosjean. Since there wasn't anything to protect Koinigg, he ended up decapitated by the gardrail...

Nice channel idea, you should definitely do simulations for other past accidents in F1 (or motorsport in general)
do the Alonso Australia one !
I agree
Do Nelson Piquet Jr’s accident in Singapore. Where Alonso definitely didn’t know anything at all about it. Nope. Definitely not.
I think the Senna one would be interesting
He was actually in there for about 28 seconds. Crazy to think about.
And the fuel cell wasn't punctured. There would've been a lot more fuel if it was.
@@glensgraphix Yeah, no. There isn't enough fuel in the fuel lines to cause _that_ much fire, especially, since there's automatic seals at the various joints. This was 100% a fuel cell rupture.

The fact that the halo ultimately saved his life is insane I gotta say I wasn’t a fan of the halo in the beginning but damn it’s needed

Ironic
If it weren’t for the Halo he would, at the very least, be trapped in the car... and that’s just the best case scenario if there were no halo.

Thank you for making this! I was very curious to see how it actually happened. Well done!
Seeing where the guardrail ended up, I still can't figure out how on earth he managed to squeeze himself out of his seat.
He gave a really good explanation of that this past Sunday. Said he tried like 3 times different ways, gave up, then tried again. All pretty much in about 10 seconds.

Great animation 👍👍👍most accurate one I've seen yet
Amazing how he survived.. that halo done the job

Absolutely amazing render, great job!
Do a video on "the making of" crash animations, that would be super interesting
It’s just 3D rendering? It’s literally in everything
Great job on this! I'm sure I'm not the only beyond fascinated with how everything happened and how he survived!
Everything went wrong AND right at the same time
I have a feeling that this channel will probably be one of the biggest on youtube, because of how long it must take to actually animate everything, and then the cam. angles, and the movement, and finally, the editing. I have a strong feeling that because of the hard work it must take to create these videos, the man behind these videos, in a atter of time, will have lots of respect, and fame. He wouldn’t be alive if it happened a few years ago without the halo. This is why he was so lucky and we are so grateful that the halo was on the car to keep the barrier away from his helmet.
excellent animation and level of detail! Halo did it's job. and more importantly, the HANS device kept him awake and alert ready to escape from the crash.
4:15 Jesus I knew it was hard for him to get out of the fire, but not that hard.
So basically the halo saved his head and provided his escape route (otherwise he might be stuck under the rail).
@@djflugel79 pretty much yeah
How he had the will to feel his way out is just chilling, he would have been disorientated and unable to see. Thank god they introduced halo's

i like this idea for a channel.
For me, in order of "appearance" the security systems that saved Romain are these:
1. The whole Survival Cell
2. The HALO (that's now part of the survival cell, but an crucial part of it in this case)
3. The HANS
4. The Headrest
5. The Helmet
6. The Nomex underwear and the whole fireproof race suit, gloves and socks.
7. The Medical Car, that arrived just seconds after the crash.
Regards
And for any of those innovations, a big amount of deaths
I get goose bumps seeing how fast that car was going during that crash. Knowing the FIA safety measures helped him survive. F1 is the pinnacle of human and car interaction. I am so glad he not only survived but will race again...
Been told 28 seconds in the fire, guess in that case every second makes a difference...
Thanks for all the great comments! Which earlier crash would you like see in a 3D animation?

what really shocked me was how quickly he could escape from that position... they seem to struggle every time they have to get out in a normal situation!
I believe he said he got out so fast because of his family. Adrenaline plus an external drive can do ridiculous things.
Yah..
Great simulation. One small detail missing: how the steering wheel was ejected from the car on impact as he mentioned in an interview
Yup, and did he really hold hes hand on steering wheel or braced for impact, like they are tought
All in all a very luck guy. Super glad he is still with us. I was very critical of the halos but I changed my opinion before this incident. Lifesavers.
I would never said that the camera could be such a threat.
Well maybe if he slipped through the barrier he would've killed a marshal or ended up upside down while burning
@@Ateblade_ there was no marshal right behind the barrier over there
@@Mat-in6gy Not necessarily right behind there, but near it is equally terrifying that nobody knows if the car can spin uncontrollably to the marshall after crashing the barrier.
without the roll hoop the drivers would be in more danger, more often
@jameshisself If I remeber correctly, the other side of that access road was also covered by guardrails.
I'm wondering what might have happened if the halo and the roll hoop were one safety structure and this airbox another crash structure that would break away on an impact. And thus just slowing the car down some more in these circumstances instead of acting like a solid hinge, which, if the middle guardrail hadn't deflected the movement, might as well have sent him up and around into a sort of cartwheel motion.
Amazing. Great job. Why does this chap only have 227 subs? It should be 100k++

Only thing you forgot to mention is that the steering wheel was gone when grojean climbed out.
If there are parallel universes, 99.9% of all the Grosjeans did not make it out of that. Wow.
do the Alonso Australia one next pls !
I mean it goes beyond 99.9....so there were a few but luckily he was one of them.
2020 almost took another person away from us, thank you halo
This animation was amazing! Good Job ❤️
Hell, if this had happened in 2017 the same call would’ve gone out. The halo saved his life, pure and simple.
Even if 90% correct this is amazing. Well done
This is wonderful. Came here from Twitter. Great job, really well explained
Just one point, Romain said that when he came to get out the first time he did notice that the steering wheel was missing. How could this have happened? Very well put together, epic job fella 💋
Because Grosjean obviously doesn't drive with a steering wheel.
The impact was so hard, that the wheel and the stem went down between his legs.
It's by design. In cases of hard head on impacts, the wheel column collapses forward to make driver enough space for quick exit
@@penusliski sweet thank you for that 💋

THROUGH the freaking guardrail man not even being propelled over it. Through the guard rail cutting the car in half and him being protected all the way by the halo. Truly didn’t understand how much the halo contributed in saving his life until seeing this 3D animation. It probably saved him from getting knocked out too so that he was able to pull himself out in the end. Amazing stuff.
As one to another fellow 3D artist, well done man!
I’d like to see an animation of the Mercedes double stack tire shuffle.
Finding the gap put him in danger but also finding the gap saved him
Incredible work recreating this.
Excellent video. Every major crash should be analysed like this if at all possible.
Conscious is the word. You put conscience.
As a video game dude, I can tell that he clipped through the wall.
This is what can happen if you try to wall-glitch. Sometimes you get into a magical realm of invisible boxes where the game would appreciate you not going, and sometimes your car rips in f'ing half. :P

Hate the halo but no one will ever question it ever again. Great analysis, the physics looks pretty spot on from the footage I saw
Terrifying and beautiful animation. So glad he survived
That he was likely to hit marshalls
More terryfying than watching it live!
Good job. Can you add an animation of how he escaped the car?
Grateful that Romain is still with us today.
I really was so curios to see this in slow motion. I thank you, i mean we all thank you
Perfect simulation! Thank you
I feel the split barriers like this (two horizontal strips) are dangerous.
Keep in mind... This all happened in less than a second!! Inertia was over the top in this accident!
I'd love to see a 3d G acceleration graph.
It would highlight the safety mechanisms behind the rail technology combined with the halo.
Awesome vid =)
They should make the top part of the barrier breakable and the lower part more sturdier. That way whenever that happens again grossjean wont get wedge inbetween.
Ромка больше всех критиковал Halo, а оно спасло ему жизнь.
Imagine the cell had landed upside down. Damn.
Yeh, don't think his helmet could withstand that force. Don't think he'd get decapitated though, just squished.
Probably dealt the damage like Bianchi's got 6 years ago.
even when his head is not squished, he would probably be unconscious, like Massa in Hungary where the spring landed in his face... he wouldnt be able to get out of the car...
Been exactly 1 year. Still amazed he survived that.
Perfect! This is what i'm looking for how Romain’s get out from that stuck barrier. Good job nice animation.
imho the T-cam should be made out of "basic casted" aluminium - it would give up and won't trap the monocoque
yeah, I didn't realize it survived the crash... it seems like it didn't do him a favor
I'm surprised that you're the only one who noticed that yet. That the first thing I saw as you did.
In past t-cam structure prevented driver's head being crashed during rollovers, that's why it is built strong
@@pr0ge Thanks, I did not know.
Yeah but I think if he went straight through the barrier then the m monocoque would have taken out a couple of marshals, though.
