  • Since we finally have the backhoe separated into 2 parts I've been able to make some good headway on diagnosing the transmission problem.

Tommy: I can't thank you enough for posting the information in RUclips. Want to pick your brain re: troubleshooting my 1978 Ford 550 Backhoe. Everything work perfect except when I put the paddle shifter in reverse. I have to rev the engine for about 5-10 seconds in order for reverse to engage. Any ideas?

Once it goes in reverse does it pull strong or is she weak? The reason I ask is that it sounds like one of two problems: If she feels like she's surging or slipping I would say the rear clutch rings. If once she's there she's strong it sounds like a hydraulic fluid pathway issue through the blocker valve (or manifold valve if you have that model). If you don't have any issues forward then it isn't your hydraulic fluid pickup screen (had a lot of people try to tell me that was my issue). And it wouldn't be you hydraulic pump (like the issue I had) because you obviously have fluid pressure so you have a good pickup and pump and the pump and torque converter don't change direction. That being said, There is a small chance your torque converter could have an issue pushing fluid back to the rear clutches but the guy who rebuilt mine said that when these models of converters go they pretty much hand grenade and you've got nothing. Hope that helps.

I am thinking of purchasing a 550 that has a issue with the transmission and the owner has started to split the tractor. I am not sure if the price is cost prohibitive. The purchase price is $4500 does that seem too high to purchase a inoperative piece of equipment.

Yeah, without being able to fire it up and make sure everything works (except the transmission) I'd not spend that amount of money. I'd let him know to call you when he gets it put back together and you can come check it out in working condition.

If you would another pic your brain. like you I have not found an abundance of helpful info on older equip. I'm looking at a 70's era ford 4500 loader hoe version. It has the 4 stick shift trans no clutch with power fwd/rev. It was in a family that had a large farm and it was used when needed. It has 2100 hours but years ago the stick shift got stuck in I'm thinking 1st. The tractor set for a few years and the ole guy passed away. They bypassed the neutral safety switch and it starts moves forward and reverse all hyd work as well they have used it like that for a bit. Now they are selling off his accumulations.
I should be able to pull stick shft cap off and the cover accessing fingers correct?
    Best; Tom
