In November 2011 at Nazaré, Portugal, extreme waterman and ocean explorer Garrett McNamara managed to surf a mammoth 78-foot wave - the largest ever recorded ride in history. Since taking the official Guinness World Records title for Largest wave surfed (unlimited), Garrett has had to battle back from a near-fatal 50-foot wipeout which left him seriously injured. Rawdie Chadwick might help you get air, if there isn’t 1-2 ft of foam on top of the water when you go to take a breath. Then once you’ve pulled it there’s also the danger that you can’t swim under, which means you’re going to be taking 50+ ft waves straight on the head.

I was surfing Naz in the winter of 07, finally the really big stuff started blowin in, monsters so big that even the big boys didn't go out. I talked my mate Brian into working the jet ski that day, he said I was crazy. We hooked up on what turned out to be the f ing Godzilla of waves, most likely over 100' of crushing death. I was scared but I committed, the speed was like nothing I've ever experienced, I was carving the water almost as fast as my heart was beating, but then I saw the shadow of it coming down from behind me, I was going to hammered. Suddenly all went white and blue, I felt the flood of warm water on my waist...wait, warm water? It was then that I woke up from my dream, oh no, that warm water I'm wet with didn't come from no damn ocean water.

Hi Jerson, good question. We have another category in this area, titled 'Largest wave surfed (paddle-in)'. Unlimited means that the participant is not permitted to be be towed into the wave from a jetski or boat - it allows the surfer to catch waves which would be too large/fast/powerful to be caught by paddling in.
