Hey from a 17yr veteran roofer who’s working on becoming a first generation farmer. You can do a lot if you keep low personal overheard and point your pretax business income toward the land. plus property values in a lot of rural areas connected to blue states are dropping pretty significantly, so even lower cash offers are going to be considered. I’m kinda in that situation and it’s looking like I could get a good chunk of farmable land a little sooner than I thought.
Stay focused, stay the course and it will happen. I've been in the medical field for over 35 years. I too, will be a first generation farmer and I am half-way there to pay cash down to purchase my homesteading acreage. I have been researching homesteading and watching land in several states for three years but I stay focused on the dream and the dream keeps you going. Don't give up!
I was in the Army for 12 years and have been a mechanic, manufacturing and retail in management positions. I keep dreaming about having my own small farm once kids are adults. Thanks for the video!
I just ran across your videos today. I grew up farming, Grandfather had 180 acres, and couple cows, My Father had almost 3,000 acres, 150-200 head of cattle, farrowed and finished pigs so around 1200 head sometimes more. It was a lot of work. Grandpa passed away, And dad retired . I bought 20 acres and slowly getting back into farming over the last 6 years. It's a great life and would never give that up. And no I did not inherit anything from my family. Started a construction company and retired from that. Your videos are full of info to help people understand what it takes or what to expect beforehand. Great job !

Cow calved about 2 months ago. 1 bull and a 6 month old calf that will be bread and used for milk when old enough we have meat chickens, butchering in 4 weeks. 12 layer chickens. We have 10 goats but gonna get rid of them. 4 pigs 1 heading for butcher next month. To hot to do it here. Garden will provide enough to can to get us through till next year. Sometimes we do purchase extra from Amish friends. Mainly strawberries ,sweetcorn. We have about 15 acres that neighbors allow me to cut for hay. Just because it keeps them from having to mow it. Did plant truckers favorite corn this year only small plot to see how it does. Have another family friend that I set up with to purchase or trade meat for corn when needed. We have a couple of springs ,a clear spring fed creek with waterfall plus a spring fed pond. We harvest rainwater for our house and at livestock building. We have several fruit trees ,apple ,pear, peach and plum as well as persimmons and wild cherry. We have 15 blueberries. Blackberries and wild Blackberries. I may have left something out. But gives an idea of what we have going. We started out with about 4 acres of woods the rest open. Lived in camper ,built our house and out buildings over time. We have 2 old tractors we we bushog, bale and finish mow with. An old JD diesel 4x6 gator and an old four wheeler. Numerous other equipment and repair parts. Seems like it never ends. Lol but wouldn't give it up for anything.
I work a 12hr shifts, and only scheduled for half the yr. I make about 70-75k a yr, i am not happy, with my career/work life... I’ve always loved being outside and love animals especially farm animals. I love working with my hands
I was planning on buying some land and starting a cattle business right off the bat but I was hesitant because I wasn't sure if it would be worth it. I'm not in it for the money, I just enjoy that lifestyle. Right after you said to start small and then grow your farm, it gave me peace of mind and more confidence to go for it. Subscribed. Thank you

Hoo boy John, I had to "turn off" some of the things I learned as an architect when I started farming. Mainly the impulse to nitpick the details about everything I built. It just takes too long to get it perfect!
Crazy how many architects turn to farming...I myself did many orientation test and would always come to architect but never was too passionate or fully interested into it but I love putting much details into what I do and am super orderly. Recently my wife and I discussed the option of starting up and farm and our whole life turned around. I've never experienced such joy in farming and I was always raised into a city life.I depend upon the experience of the experienced farmers to guide me and watching video tutorial like you guys have done. Thank you so much for all your help friend.
Pete - I just ordered your book. I am really looking forward to reading it. I don't know that I want to become a farmer, but man do I need something new. Work for me is just a chore and and doesn't bring any real joy. I am 50 years old and getting awfully tired of it!

Farming doesn’t have to be about $200,000 tractors and half million dollars combines. My biggest word of advice is don’t get in over your head. Keep track of spending and don’t get caught up with having to have the new and best equipment. At that point your working just to pay the equipment costs & you’ll never get ahead. Love your videos. I grew up on a small ranch I've already seen all the issues. A few years ago a big winter storm blew in I would work at the water department in the day feed cattle at night. One time I had ice my beard and my job called me to fix a water leak. I'm in the guard and every deployment I miss working the farm so after this deployment I'm gonna start my own ranch.
I am where you are right now.. Working in the airforce but I keep feeling this calling to farming... my work actually benefiting me, my community and my family at the end of the day... other then just money..
I became a farm manager on a million dollar plus farm, that's not counting the animals. 6 broiler houses 2 herds of cattle (250 give or take and 300 give or take), 375 acres doing hay and it had 14 ponds but didn't harvest the fish (except for us). In one year we were ranked 9th in state, I loved it but it was a lot of work for me and the wife. I still want my own farm just not that big and demanding.
I'm very late probly but I'm new. And I'm glad you said books cause I'm always on the internet looking things up. I didn't think books had a such thing with farming and live stock. I know the struggles of not having money. I'm here right now at my lowest. But making some progress cause I just got a job a few days ago. So i gotta save up money for this. Wish me luck!

I'm planning on starting a similar venture and the farm will need to pay for itself if I'm to be able to do this. My hubby is okay with the rat race and with really young kids, we're already living on one income and able to save. So the info you're sharing is so, so valuable, crucial even. I grew up around cattle. My dad is now gone and can't share the business side of things with me. All I know are the daily chores lol. Thanks for stepping into those shoes for me. I can't voice my appreciation enough.

Hey Pete, Just found you! 10 months on our farm and so many truths. Year 1, we made decisions not to invest a lot of funds. So thankful we didn't, just keeping ahead of unexpected costs. Come August, year 1; we will start to invest in equipment and any animals, if any this year.(Now have a cat! A must!!) Starting slow is such wisdom. Totally agree with you. Thank you again!!

I like this video, I am thinking of doing the same. At the moment I work as a Software Engineer, but I dislike more and more just sitting behind the computer all day watching a screen. And every software issue the management wants us to make is always in a hurry. At the moment I am looking into the options of raising chickens and ducks and what I all need/costs.

Thank you for this different perspective as I am looking to do this as a side gig. I currently have chickens, plan on pig pen and cattle before summer. Currently have HUGE garden, rows are 320 ft long. Also have a green house. Last fall I put up over 500lbs of potatoes up for fall harvest and didn't run out until January. Hopefully my spring Garden load will last till fall and fall last till spring harvest. Planting 1 extra row this year of them. Still have frozen and jarred vegetables from fall garden.
Pete, I'm a machinist outside of Rochester, Ny. I'm 35 and I've been at my company for 15 years. After watching you're videos I see this is possible and my soul is screaming to do it. I hate working for someone else. It's depressing. machining is a wonderful trade but I've lost my love for it and the routine of going to that place to work every day has become depressing. There's 130 acres of family land with a nice barn not being used for anything in Mansfield, Pa. I have a 2016 3/4 GMC, a 12k trailer, a Super M, a Super H, a '63 GMC 4000 dump truck and there's a '53 Ford Jubilee down there that my great grandfather bought new. I have a log splitter that I built, several Stihl saws (including my ported 044 that I'm in love with hehe). So I have a few pieces of equipment and some land to get started with. I'm gonna give this some serious consideration. Thanks for the inspiration, and I wish you and yours well. Happy farming!
Just found your channel. I'm 55 just made decision to make a life and career change. Bought 40+ acres and have always wanted to do something similar.. life is an adventure so next year will be starting a homestead farm for semi retirement. Great videos keep them coming 👏💪😉

You can sum it up pretty well by understanding that you should not go into it blind. It's a business and you need to look through the lens of running your farm as a business and not a hobby. A business plan forces you to sit down and take a really hard and serious look at what you intend to do and how it will make money for you. If you can't prove the profitability of the business on paper, then you probably will not be able to do it in real life either. You have to know how you will land on your feet after you take that giant leap. Good luck.
I always looked into cattle farming because auto mechanic was a main job but I didn’t always want to focus on that. I have a HUGE goal, owning a shop and farming hobby. I really want my life to be surrounded by land and not buildings. Wish me luck
I like his teaching, im thinking of doing something but I'm apprehensive because I'm 65 and feeling older, I have 20 acres mostly pasture but all over grown so do I want to do it, I don't have a tractor and I'm on a fixed income. So much to think about. But I have to do something to keep moving and enjoying the process,

Excellent content! In a few years we expect to transform our long term rental property on 4 acres of tropical rainforest into a live on micro farm with a couple of eclectic ohana cottages open for vacation rental guests. In the process of researching our options...planning on developing permaculture type orchard areas considering ducks and other poultry along with a few Idaho pasture pigs or possibly dairy goats. These are the hard honest questions we find ourselves talking about. I am also a Joel Salatin fan. Aloha😃🌈🤙

Hey wait a minute, that seems like...wait for it...WORK! Haha. An old man now, I can't remember much of my childhood that wasn't in the barn or out in the field. That experience has served me well, though. As a broad generalization, I find people who grew up in the city aren't very good drivers, don't do as well with their hands, and are rather clueless about where their food comes from. I played high school football (40miles south of Lambeau Field where Vince and the gang were tearing up the NFL) and, with a few notable exceptions, all the farm boys were stronger and tougher than their city-bred counterparts. We had a high school bully, a body builder, who took to harassing a fellow named Roland P., a quiet, plodding sort. One day, in the school cafeteria, Roland had had enough and in a flash the bully was bloody pulp on the floor crying. Roland just sauntered away. The key here, to my mind, is that Roland got up every morning and milked cows, cleaned the barn, fed the heifers and calves and bedded them down, all before school. One more thing: I believe small-herd diary farming is the high art of agriculture. It requires a higher level of management skill and breadth of knowledge, and an enormous commitment and dedication. If you break an ankle and have pneumonia, to bad, the cows have to be milked and cared for every single day. You have to really love cows to do that. Same here sir. It really gives me such amount of peace of mind everytime I pasture my cattle. Soon I'll have my herd. In proper God's time.
The issue with cows are space and time. Do some research on sheep. Much faster turn around and good demand. Broilers work right alongside both.

Keep track of spending and don’t get caught up with having to have the new and best equipment. At that point your working just to pay the equipment costs & you’ll never get ahead. Love your videos. I grew up on a small ranch I've already seen all the issues. A few years ago a big winter storm blew in I would work at the water department in the day feed cattle at night. One time I had ice my beard and my job called me to fix a water leak. I'm in the guard and every deployment I miss working the farm so after this deployment I'm gonna start my own ranch.
I am where you are right now.. Working in the airforce but I keep feeling this calling to farming... my work actually benefiting me, my community and my family at the end of the day... other then just money..

I became a farm manager on a million dollar plus farm, that's not counting the animals. 6 broiler houses 2 herds of cattle (250 give or take and 300 give or take), 375 acres doing hay and it had 14 ponds but didn't harvest the fish (except for us). In one year we were ranked 9th in state, I loved it but it was a lot of work for me and the wife. I still want my own farm just not that big and demanding.

I'm very late probly but I'm new. And I'm glad you said books cause I'm always on the internet looking things up. I didn't think books had a such thing with farming and live stock. I know the struggles of not having money. I'm here right now at my lowest. But making some progress cause I just got a job a few days ago. So i gotta save up money for this. Wish me luck!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I hope you continue to be a source of information for those of us interested in small time farming. The business part of it is very important. I'm planning on starting a similar venture and the farm will need to pay for itself if I'm to be able to do this. My hubby is okay with the rat race and with really young kids, we're already living on one income and able to save. So the info you're sharing is so, so valuable, crucial even. I grew up around cattle. My dad is now gone and can't share the business side of things with me. All I know are the daily chores lol. Thanks for stepping into those shoes for me. I can't voice my appreciation enough.
I'm here in 2022 and the food market the way it is these types of farms are the future. And the market is supporting that.

Hey Pete, Just found you! 10 months on our farm and so many truths. Year 1, we made decisions not to invest a lot of funds. So thankful we didn't, just keeping ahead of unexpected costs. Come August, year 1; we will start to invest in equipment and any animals, if any this year.(Now have a cat! A must!!) Starting slow is such wisdom. Totally agree with you. Thank you again!!

I like this video, I am thinking of doing the same. At the moment I work as a Software Engineer, but I dislike more and more just sitting behind the computer all day watching a screen. And every software issue the management wants us to make is always in a hurry. At the moment I am looking into the options of raising chickens and ducks and what I all need/costs.

Thank you for this different perspective as I am looking to do this as a side gig. I currently have chickens, plan on pig pen and cattle before summer. Currently have HUGE garden, rows are 320 ft long. Also have a green house. Last fall I put up over 500lbs of potatoes up for fall harvest and didn't run out until January. Hopefully my spring Garden load will last till fall and fall last till spring harvest. Planting 1 extra row this year of them. Still have frozen and jarred vegetables from fall garden.

Pete, I'm a machinist outside of Rochester, Ny. I'm 35 and I've been at my company for 15 years. After watching you're videos I see this is possible and my soul is screaming to do it. I hate working for someone else. It's depressing. machining is a wonderful trade but I've lost my love for it and the routine of going to that place to work every day has become depressing. There's 130 acres of family land with a nice barn not being used for anything in Mansfield, Pa. I have a 2016 3/4 GMC, a 12k trailer, a Super M, a Super H, a '63 GMC 4000 dump truck and there's a '53 Ford Jubilee down there that my great grandfather bought new. I have a log splitter that I built, several Stihl saws (including my ported 044 that I'm in love with hehe). So I have a few pieces of equipment and some land to get started with. I'm gonna give this some serious consideration. Thanks for the inspiration, and I wish you and yours well. Happy farming!

Just found your channel. I'm 55 just made decision to make a life and career change. Bought 40+ acres and have always wanted to do something similar.. life is an adventure so next year will be starting a homestead farm for semi retirement. Great videos keep them coming 👏💪😉

You can sum it up pretty well by understanding that you should not go into it blind. It's a business and you need to look through the lens of running your farm as a business and not a hobby. A business plan forces you to sit down and take a really hard and serious look at what you intend to do and how it will make money for you. If you can't prove the profitability of the business on paper, then you probably will not be able to do it in real life either. You have to know how you will land on your feet after you take that giant leap. Good luck.

I always looked into cattle farming because auto mechanic was a main job but I didn’t always want to focus on that. I have a HUGE goal, owning a shop and farming hobby. I really want my life to be surrounded by land and not buildings.

I like his teaching, im thinking of doing something but I'm apprehensive because I'm 65 and feeling older, I have 20 acres mostly pasture but all over grown so do I want to do it, I don't have a tractor and I'm on a fixed income. So much to think about. But I have to do something to keep moving and enjoying the process,

Excellent content! In a few years we expect to transform our long term rental property on 4 acres of tropical rainforest into a live on micro farm with a couple of eclectic ohana cottages open for vacation rental guests. In the process of researching our options...planning on developing permaculture type orchard areas considering ducks and other poultry along with a few Idaho pasture pigs or possibly dairy goats. These are the hard honest questions we find ourselves talking about. I am also a Joel Salatin fan. Aloha😃🌈🤙

Hey wait a minute, that seems like...wait for it...WORK! Haha. An old man now, I can't remember much of my childhood that wasn't in the barn or out in the field. That experience has served me well, though. As a broad generalization, I find people who grew up in the city aren't very good drivers, don't do as well with their hands, and are rather clueless about where their food comes from. I played high school football (40miles south of Lambeau Field where Vince and the gang were tearing up the NFL) and, with a few notable exceptions, all the farm boys were stronger and tougher than their city-bred counterparts. We had a high school bully, a body builder, who took to harassing a fellow named Roland P., a quiet, plodding sort. One day, in the school cafeteria, Roland had had enough and in a flash the bully was bloody pulp on the floor crying. Roland just sauntered away. The key here, to my mind, is that Roland got up every morning and milked cows, cleaned the barn, fed the heifers and calves and bedded them down, all before school. One more thing: I believe small-herd diary farming is the high art of agriculture. It requires a higher level of management skill and breadth of knowledge, and an enormous commitment and dedication. If you break an ankle and have pneumonia, to bad, the cows have to be milked and cared for every single day. You have to really love cows to do that.
