  • Movie director Roberto Rossellini, representative of post-war neorealism, made his name with "Rome, Open City", followed by "Paisà" and "Germany, Year Zero". Astonished by his movies, actress Ingrid Bergman wrote Rossellini a letter asking to work with him. When the two met in Paris, they immediately fell in love with each other and started an affair which caused a huge scandal when Berman moved to Europe. She left behind her husband and daughter as well as her Hollywood career for Roberto Rossellini. Even though she became pregnant after she moved to Europe, she was still starring in the movie "Stromboli".

Bergman had already appeared on the screen in films by Swedish director Gustaf Molander. She had her breakthrough in Hollywood with her role in "Intermezzo: A Love Story". David O. Selznick had seen her in Molander's film and brought the actress to Hollywood for the remake under his direction. Warner then cast her with Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca", in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "The House of Lady Alquist", for which she won her first Oscar.
Rossellini turned out to be a big egomaniac and possessive partner. Bergman was now supposed to work only for him. When the French director Jean Renoir invited her to appear in "Elena and Her Men", she fled to Paris. Rossellini and Bergman broke up and she returned to Hollywood where she presented the Oscars with great applause and soon received another one herself for her role in "Anastasia". She continued her career also in Sweden, where she starred in Ingmar Berman's "Autumn Sonata".
Contributors to the film from the "Iconic Couples" series are Isabella Rossellini, Pia Lindström and Tag Gallagher, author of "The Adventures of Roberto Rossellini. His Life and Films". Also Guy Maddin, director of "My Dad is 100" with Isabella Rossellini, David Forgacs, author of "Roberto Rossellini: Magician of the Real", Paul Duncan, editor of "Bergman. Movie Icons", Charlotte Chandler, author of "Ingrid. A Personal Biography", Grace Carter, author of "Ingrid Bergman", Nino Bizzarri, director of "Rossellini under the Volcano", and Fiorella Mariana, director and niece of Rossellini.

Pia is a very smart woman, trying to understand what has happened. All the while she probably suffered a lot. It is good to see that level of understanding. A very intelligent and gracious woman.

Don't make it too mythic or iconic. Their union was a disaster, totally incompatible personalities. In the end Ingrid said 'Swedes and Italians do not mix'. She was looking for an escape from Petter's dominance and fell into Rossellini's dominance, possessiveness and jealousy. Ingrid probably has been looking for some sort of father figure all her life. She was a very heavy drinker and a very heavy smoker. She might have wanted to fill a void in her, all her life. She missed her parents who died young, leaving her an orphan at the age of 13. Ingrid had a lot of affairs too, starting with Edvin Adolphson in Sweden. She stands out for her courage but paid a hefty 'price' for that 'courage', the affair with Rossellini. But nevertheless, she was an incandescent beautiful woman, who inspired love and therefore was loved. Roberto was a philanderer once saying to a friend (while he was in a relationship with Ingrid) 'Let's go to a bordello'. The friend replied: but you are with one of the most beautiful women in the world!' He replied: 'Yes, but she does not do what they do in the bordello'.
