One aspect of this game you missed. Ezekiel was indeed a real person. When i went through the first time, the player i met was great. We learned to communicate using the chirps and went through it together. I almost cried when he fell at the end before i did and walking into the light with a stranger you experienced such an emotional bond with was breathtaking

also, length of scarf = number of glyphs collected this round, trim on cloak = number of murals read and finally white cloak = mastery of the game. This is important to know when you see another player, it tells you where he is at in his journey.

Yeah man Journey was special. I had this when I was still in college. There were some good stories about it that I still remember when it was newly released, about players who by the end drew hearts and other sychronised figures on the ground for each other before they departed. It makes the experience all the more personal and spiritual because the game never tips you on the other players' usernames. It's just you, your thoughts, the world, and a nobody who you'll never meet again. It's a deeply soothing experience

Hey Mati! love the videos so far this year!! Here are a couple short game suggestions: 1. Limbo 2. Inside (these two are both puzzle platform sidescrollers from the same developer with a similar dark/horror-adjacent vibe!) and 3. A Night in the Woods (a charming sidescroller coming of age story focused mainly on story and dialogue with some simple exploration, cute art style and great characters) ! check em out I think you'll like them! Limbo and Inside in particular could make a great back-to-back 2 episode thing. I might also recommend you check out the respective predecessor and successor to SotC: 1. Ico and 2. The Last Guardian

Hands down the most beautiful game ever made, and the music complements the game so freaking well. I think you would like the game "Abzû", it is about the same in length but instead of running through a vast desert, you are a diver. It's not by the same company, but it sure has the same feel and look to it.

Alright, since you clearly fuck with Shadow of the Colossus and Journey there's another game that I know you would absolutely love. It's called Inside and it's pretty clearly inspired by Journey. But the atmosphere is way darker. Where Journey absolutely nails capturing that sense of wonder, Inside absolutely nails capturing that sense of dread. I highly highly recommend you play it if you're down for a horror game. It doesn't have any jump scares whatsoever. Just deadly vibes.

I had someone with my through my entire first playthrough and was lucky enough to just have that one person. I cried at the end and still sometimes think of my little friend.
Not quite at the end of the video yet but basically: The Lore as I assume it is - The game is a cycle of death and rebirth and all life goes to the mountain to be reborn. The area beyond the mountain were you die is the afterlife. As each time you finish the journey and play again you keep learning the same story, completing the same trials and forever drawn to death. The glyphs are basically souls (every player has a unique glyph). Which are the scarf fishes, dolphins, whale and you (and your friend if you had one). Eventually the Light dudes learned to control life and use its energy to build a great civilization but they got greedy. They took it too far, ensnaring and destroying life to make more power. Power they couldn't control eventually. Which were the machines that hunt and consume all life to power themselves leading to the end of their civilization. Hindering the cycle of rebirth as the machine chase you until the end. I think the Light dudes help you (and everyone) at the end as redemption for the disorder they caused.
Edit: The Tower and the cutscene after shows your journey and your end. If you had another player with you, which you did most of the time but didn't notice lol
Eventually, when you find all the glyphs/souls in every level and die you will become kind of like the Light dudes. By helping the souls you are redeemed and you can regenerate your own power without the help of the other souls.
That is my interpretation. Also EZEKIEL was a real person lol

You start the game alone, meet a random person and have no idea you are, play through the whole game with that one person, becoming attached and eventually wanting to help the partner you’ve never met or thought you’d really care about, and by the end of the game, start tearing up when it’s time to say good bye. The journey ends, and you know you’ll never know who the person is you went on this journey with. I’ll never forget my first time playing this game.

The first time I played Journey my interpretation was that it felt like a metaphor for living with depression. Some days you’re doing great surfing along in the sunshine and out of nowhere bam, darkness. The only way to get through is with help from others. Even in your weakest moments when you feel like you can’t make it, you can with help.

    • @blinkachu5275
      @blinkachu5275 11 месяцев назад +2

I think that's a good way of interpreting it. There's this huge mountain to scale when you have depression, and the journey to healing is a road of ups and downs, from enjoying the sights to being crippled with doubt. The entities you meet on the way can be seen as friends, family, psychologists etc. that help you along the journey to realize where you've been, what you're worth, that you can do it

This was an absolutely fabulous playthough to watch. I just played this game recently myself and it really is beautiful. I feel pretty much the same about the overlying message of the game, but I also feel like it's also about humanity and the things that cause our downfalls. I think it was trying to show how the glowy people found those scarf things, used them to make energy to power their cities, then the people started fighting & began using the energy to turn on each other, leading to most of their deaths. (hence all those graves) I feel that Journey is mostly about the journey of life as a whole, since throughout life, we also tend to learn about how our history shaped the world we live in today and how we can do better than those who came before us. We may go through challenges, be it because of society or our own personal struggles. But in the end, we all end up at the light at the top of the mountain (death). That's my general take on it anyway.
Anywho, love this video, keep up the awesome work! I subscribed when you started your SotC playthrough (I'm a Fumito Ueda/Team Ico/GenDesign enthusiast heheh) and I can't wait to see what more awaits! I'm super excited for you to play The Last Guardian eventually, and I really hope you can find Ico for PS2. I'm sure someone has likely mentioned this to you before, but in case not, Ico inspired a ton of now-famous game developers to create video games. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the soulsborne series, is one of them. I believe the developers of Journey were inspired by it too if I remember right, but that might not be fully accurate. 🤔 I'm sure SotC gave it some minor inspiration too if that's the case. Something else to note about Ico is, if you play it on the PS2, there's 2 versions. There's the Japanese/European version and the American version. I was fortunate enough to play the European version of it because of PS+ on the PS3, and I'm pretty glad I did. There are a few spots in the American version where the puzzles are a bit simpler and not as satisfying to complete. (I'm sure it's still satisfying, just not as much so) And if you play the European version on new game +, certain text that is in the made-up language runic (the same backwards Romaji as SotC) will be translated, as well as a small bonus in the ending! The game is amazing either way, just felt that's something you should know in case you care about that sort of thing.
There is one other indie game that is very much overlooked but I feel everyone should play at least once if they happen to have a PS3; Papo & Yo. It certainly doesn't have the best graphics or gameplay, but the story and ending is absolutely worth it in my opinion. I feel you'd be a great person to play that game and I hope it's something you can get around to someday. ^^
My little rant has gone on long enough, have a good day. 💜

My interpretation of Journey is that it is somewhat similar to "Journey To The West", in the sense of some adventure to reach enlightenment. It really is such a beautiful creation to interact with and explore. Also, in terms of small indie games. I have a few suggestions. There is Inside and Limbo. Both are really environmentally driven in terms of their storytelling. Both are also quite thought provoking, if that is something you find interesting. Overall though, it really boils down to whatever you wanna make, and personally, I genuinely enjoy what you make. You truly feel like a öne in a million" kind of creator. I didn’t expect this game soo soon! I love this game. I remember tearing up while playing. I have no idea why. The ending/reveal gave me hardcore chills.
My biggest recommendation is «Ori and the Blind Forest». It is a metroidvania plattformer with beautiful visuals, great music and an emotional story. Not too long also.

When the PS3 generation started, I wasn't sure whether I should get a 360 or PS3. I'd had PS1 and PS2, but not many good PS3 games at launch. As soon as Sony announced Last Guardian was in production I bought a PS3! Of course it never came out on PS3 - but it was worth the wait - apart from the f*ckin awful camera!

Absolutely love that Journey resonated with you so strongly. In keeping with that desire to play similar indie “masterpiece” games- gotta try ABZÛ. Made by the same studio and is very much so a spiritual successor. Take the whole Journey experience of cinematography, music and ambiance, but substitute the deserts caves and mountains for a diving undersea adventure. You’d LOVE it!

That you can find little moments of joy like these in an hour-long gaming experience is just wonderful.
    3 recommendations for you:
    1. Inside. Seen it recommended in other comments - it's really one of a kind.
    2. Little Nightmares. So damn creepy with an ending that...well, you'll see.
    3. Thomas Was Alone. A real outlier that's often dismissed, but honestly, this gem of a game really grabbed me and needs to be played.

  • @dheu

This game is one of my favorite. It is so simple and so beautiful and so emotionally brutal. My interpretation is that it is a metaphor of life itself. You start with an easy going life as a baby, you gain confidence as a child, you’re racing through as a young adult, life becomes more a struggle as an older adult and you start to experience more danger and setbacks, and then as you near the end of your life it is such an uphill battle, until finally you reach the end which is so freeing after the struggle. It’s about the cycle of life and the way our ancestors/predecessors inspire our own journeys. Such an incredible experience.

Very cool playthrough. Like many here, the channel's new direction seems very fitting and interesting to me. A couple of recommendations for shorter indie games from me as well. Firewatch (a walking simulator about a middle-aged man who, after a difficult personal experience, takes a job as a lookout/firewatcher in a national park where strange things start happening. It's not a horror game but more of a light thriller/drama). Inside (a dark puzzle-platformer - quite a popular game, likely to garner more views than Firewatch, which is more niche). What Remains of Edith Finch (something between a walking simulator and an adventure game - incorporates multiple game genres). The first two are about 3.5-4 hours long, the third game is around 2 hours. Personally, I hope that maybe you'll consider tackling the new Tomb Raider trilogy (2013-2018) at some point, which is a spectacular action-adventure saga.

This game was an incredible achievement for it's time. Even the sand tech was rivaling Uncharted 3. And it did look absolutely gorgeous on PS3. Despite being made by small team there's so much technical, gameplay and storytelling innovations.
Adaptive multiplayer. The game connects you with a random player who's doing the same level as you and triggered same conditions(ie has same parts of bridge fixed) and disconnects you if you get too far from each other and connect you with another. You've actually missed quite a few players that were near you, every time there was white light on the side of the screen it meant there was a player just outside your view.
OST is one of the best examples of interactive adaptive soundtrack, certain sections trigger only if you do some specific things in the game while staying seamless. Also different instruments play if you play by yourself or if you're currently connected to other player
The story if you're playing single is basically just deconstruction of Hero's Journey, but if you're playing with other people it becomes emergent storytelling that you're creating with other players by helping each other, guiding new players, making sacrifices, etc. Dying on that mountain together with some a person you spent the last hour with hits totally different.

First game that hit me in feels. Others may have already posted this; taller white robe travelers are Ancestors. You can obtain white robe as player if you obtain all pieces and scarf self generates. My takeaway. Our Journey in life. Sometimes people (other players) come into our lives for a chapter, while others stay longer, and rare occasion our entire Journey. At the end of game we are sent back to beginning (rebirth). I’m not religious but this game definitely spiritual or similar. Two Brothers is great game. There’s a remake/remaster (unsure)coming out in few months.

Every time I see a proper remaster of a blast from the past title, I just wish Rayman 2 - The Great Escape would get the same treatment as well.
It's probably the most influencal and inspiring game I've ever played. I feel like without Rayman 2, I wont like the same stuff I like today, including Souls titles. It just changed who I am. I believe that the day will come when I can experience it again in it's pimped up glory, alongside everyone who missed the best title of the PS 1 era.
Speaking of PS 1 era, the true Tomb Raider trilogy's remaster is coming out in Feb 14. Highly recommend it to everyone who's interested in the real Tomb Raider experience.

Fun fact, the last song is called "i was born for this" and the singer is speaking a different language for each verse in the the song. Look up austin wintory, he is the composer for the whole game. He redid his music recently to reflect and add upon it along with his thoughts and comments on making music for the game.
