My piano teacher explained me that those crazy metronomic indications are the maximum speed at which the etude is an efficient exercise. When you get to a faster tempo than the indicated one, you're just wasting time getting your fingers to hurt.
@@MiScusi69 I had a really interesting talk with my piano teacher and she pointed out that the tempo tells you the character of the piece. You should practice the movement of just the arm in that time and concentrate on the harmonic structure. The fingers should just them use minimal movements to pluck the keys while the arm is moving. You shouldn't even listen to the indivudal fast notes, but the underlying harmony. She said to absolutely not practice them slowly, because you will lose sight (well- hearing I guess) of the underlying harmony. It's been an interesting experience practicing that way. I'm only a week in and by no means 'good', but I am already playing the first two at more or less at tempo with a weighless arm and I can do this for easily an hour without any issues or tiredness. @@unnamed_boi you are totally wrong! The books I mentioned make a musical and technical ridicule out of the chopin studios that I consider super boring and overrated.
Czerny was a very good composer along with being good at writing studies. Dear teachers! If you have pupils with difficulties in moving fast with or just keeping "horizontal" hand-position and free movements. Do consider, that they may have rotator-cuff syndrome, which is not seldom at all. 4 short, strong muscles control the shoulder joint and may be so tight, that they make rotation very difficult. These pupils should be offered an operation, which is done by removing a bit of bone mass in the shoulder joint. I know so, because, i have "been there" and got the operation. Now I have totally free rotation and more relaxed shoulders while playing.
A great video that gives acknowledgment to Czerny’s exercises and a big slap in the face to those anti-Czerny people. Both Lang Lang and Yuja Wang learned Czerny. Needless to say these etudes are useful?
Thanks Lang Lang. I was wondering if it's a great idea to practise Czerny or not. I was taught with a/the Bayer method and eventually enjoyed it. As you indicated, if the pianist makes it fun, it will be fun. Inspiring! I couldn't get away with a suit like yours but I'm definitely going to try to bring a spring to my playing :)
Czerny has more difficult works than the one you mentioned, for example his first piano concerto dedicated to Mereaux, requires more virtuosity than what is seen in the score, even so his exercises Op.364, 369, 365, 388, 779 and others are extremely difficult than any Prokofiev or Liszt Study
The historic metronome usage was different than from todays reading. It changed at the end of the 19th century. Now we are confused about the metronome marks. Czerny published his teaching material for regular students, not for god-like virtuosis...
@gdudas, I am sorry for my inadequate English. Both ancient sources and our kids shows us that the theory that you mention don’t fit the music of C Czerny. In Czerny’s op 740 no 13 Czerny himself mention 15 notes per second as a roughly maximum speed. Here on RUclips we find a number of children, some of them younger than 10 years playing Czerny op 299 much faster than the virtuoso Czerny himself. That is of course completely illogical.
