This actually explains a lot about modern culture in general. We are having a difficult time communicating with one another and pop cultures emphasis on sarcasm and lack of empathy MAY have something to do with it.
Pop culture is a usually exaggerated but still accurate reflection of modern culture in general. It’s symptomatic. Basically, blaming pop culture for the problems of modern culture is like someone blaming a fun house mirror for them being ugly
Have a different theory. The rise of mass media has led to pseudo-relationships where various details of celebrities are trickled out to give a false notion of intimacy and "knowing" somebody, but it is highly curated and only one way- I may know more about Taylor Swift's relationship drama than even my best friend's, but Taylor only knows me through her accountants and whether she has met her quarterly sales targets. Except now through social media, I am also in the business of pseudo-relationships, trading exposure for likes and 15 minutes of fame or possibly being an influencer. It is simulacra writ large on interaction and media divorced from reality.
gigantes imperator They’re an exaggerated reflection though. Blaming them is kinda pointless because they are a superlative reflection. There is a lot of deeper and more complicated trouble. Financial concerns, societal constructs and so on. It’s like how parents blamed rock n roll or DnD for corrupting their youth.
I don't know if "Archer" was deliberately trying to imply that screen time as a child ruined Archer's development, it always kinda seemed that the writers of the show wanted to insert as many pop culture references as possible for comedic effect. The negligent mother and absent father aspect seems to be more important than just the sheer amount of TV/movies it's implied that he watched growing up.
Nah, it's definitely implied. Mostly because of the fact he didn't have friends; we see throughout the series the troubles he faces socializing and coming across as a functional person while talking to people. He knows it, too; he even says it to the minor girl who wanted to seduce him: he overcompensates because of insecurity and ends up coming across as a snob.
Just because it's not intended doesn't mean that its not there. Those two common elements make the show make so much more sense. Art is more than the artists intent it is also the viewers interpretation.
@@Mvenven oooh, that's so true! Art can be breath-taking but it really is amazing how it brings people together and how the same thing can be interpreted differently by people with different experiences. The sharing of these perspectives truly enrich knowledge.
I see what you're getting at, but I think the fact that Archer himself is almost always the one making the pop-culture references is important. No-one else in the show drops them with the sheer density he does, and it's often used to call attention to the fact that people don't understand him. So this reminds me of something I read about Stranger Things, which uses pop-culture references to make a point about communication as well, but does it both ways. In Strangers Things the kids often communicate in pop culture references (DnD, Star Wars, etc) but most of the adults don't get it - like, when the kids tell the police they took the "Murkwood" path (a Hobbit reference) the police are confused. The one exception is Joy, who regularly communicates with her son Will via pop culture, most notably with the lights on the wall (a Poltergeist reference). Pop culture is used to show bonding and communication. What I'm getting at here is that I think Archer deliberately uses pop-culture references to highlight an inability to communicate, not just for comedy, and whether it comes from TV or neglectful parents is kind of secondary.
What would being raised by youtube mean though? More natural but weirdly impersonal speaking? More low brow humor and hysterical laughing? Randomly asking people when they ask if they can help telling them follow their social media?

"He's learned how to be human through observing what he's seen in fictional programming meant to entertain not educate." This may also explain the impact "reality" TV has had on recent generations and the resulting decline in civility in American public discourse. Now, what sort of mass psychotherapy do we need in order to correct this?
Well, in the 17th century the Enlightenment caused any form of entertainment to be judged by how realistic it is. The Enlightenment, if successfully made into going through a renaissance, might solve this issue (and cause some neccesary democratic revolutions along the way).
One reason that archer behaves the way he does is because Apparently he’s actually autistic and someone to say people have a real hard time communicating and social boundaries and blurring the lines between reality and TV
it's just edited like that though. for the first several seasons (and all the way through the present, as far as I know) the actors record their lines separately and then everything is stitched together afterwards. if you think about it, it'd be really hard to have dialogue that snappy even with a *lot* of takes and rehearsals.
Its not just being raised by a TV its being isolated a lot throughout childhood. Wether a person isolates themselves, or are isolated for other reasons, its not healthy to be alone for a long time, especially if you are also still going through psychological and physical development. Its not only bad for your mental health its bad for your physical health too. If you are isolated and inside a room/house all the time
So in a way archer is like Jim carry in the cable guy, he’s mom and dad were not there for him emotionally, and was raised by television. So much of charaters ideas of human interaction, espionage and how the world works is from it.
I just thought that the writers wanted to include a lot of reference humour, but trust Wisecrack to make me feel like an idiot by explaining how a show I've been watching for years is 10x deeper than I ever thought it was trying to be Also, is Jared back?
It's crazy, I didnt expect this video to be so relatable. I had a really hard childhood growing up, and the TV was my only friend. I was completely socially inept because I never had any example of social cues as I didn't have any role models. As a kid, I couldn't differentiate real life from TV shows. I thought people bragged, flirted, fought, and acted badass in real life the same way they did in tv shows. (Obviously it ended up driving people away more than often than not). Thank you for this vid, I didnt know I needed this, it made me understand my childhood better
It reminds me of how Jean Baudrillard wrote in Simulacra and Simulation, that we humans in general prefer signs and representations of things, than we prefer that actual thing itself. It sounds strange... and is, I suppose. People prefer abstract symbols of donkeys and elephants over concrete political platforms, with sets of policies prescribed specifically to address defined challenges. Sometimes we carry that forward through many layers of abstraction apart from the real objects. A gold prop microphone is a symbol representative of a regular microphone, which is a symbol representative of the activity done by a talk radio host upon who's desk the gold prop microphone sits. Welp, this turned into a real tangent! Who would have seen THAT coming?! Keep it in mind next time you're on Jeopardy, I guess!
David Stinnett my example was the most popular show based on popular culture You know clusters Shaping popular culture Unless you think Big Bang is the same as Senfeild , Married with children, all in the family , etc Unless I’m off about the “Easter egg” and “reference” style of humour when it comes to Gen z? Archer reflects Gen x “latch key kids” raised on tv with Gen Z humour why don’t you watch wisecracks video on Big Bang theory to understand my point based on their analysis of that sitcom.
Robert Mishler I compared the real life audience who watch Big Bang theory to the character of Archer when it comes to their references based humour. Following? Still offended?
Most RUclipsrs record a backlog of content in case they go on a month long vacation so they don't miss their weekly upload. Recording was also more casual during Covid-19, so Jared was probably able to get a decent backlog going that editors are still working on.
God damn it... Now I now why I like Archer so much. We are the same. p.s - I did watched the gilmore girls when growing up. (and ER, friends, and whatever Aaron Sorkin made)
I met some of my little sister's friends and I realized they talk like people who learned social skills from online forms and memes. The conversation didn't quite flow. It was like each person was trying to introduce a new topic when it was their turn to speak. They were having a good time, though!
I was raised by tv! & Video games! Basically fantasizing habits & distorted view of the world is what I got. Not interacting & experiencing the real world caused severe social odd behaviours, thoughts & thinking patterns that I've been discovering & fixing for a few years now. Seriously distinguishing between the fantasy, fictional world (yes even books) from the real world, real universe is quite important as I have realised so I avoid them all as much as possible. I hate it that instead of living in the real world, I was living in fantasy basically doing nothing for most of my life. REGRETS!! Now when I tell people I was addicted to films, music, gaming, they laugh. I wish I could effectively tell them how serious it in fact is but I guess they don't care or are ignorant so I guess I will just let them suffer & learn from their own life even if it will be like getting hit by a whole train of bricks of regret about wasting life. Or maybe they just want to die in the matrix 😂complaining, whining & asking all the wrong questions or just want to live high (matrix) life without ever seeing the reality as it is. It's like seeing through the phone with a beauty or some fantasy filter on & acting like it without seeing the real ourself & the universe.
I find it pertinent the video doesn't address that Archer's theoretical dissonance is further exacerbated by the fact he exists in such a permissive environment. He doesn't just act like a super spy, he is a super spy, and on some level in an environment where normal people come up against structure and restriction, he is rewarded for his behavior even though he desperately wants to be stopped.
Archer was not raised by TV. He was raised by a heroine addicted British WWI veteran valet to at least a homosocial RAF pilot. And his dysfunction, such that it is, is in sync with his environment which is a parodic spy TV show. And ever since Neil Postman and David Foster Wallace nerdwallah dudes have to see the great American syphillis is the boob tube. The references are far and wide, and frankly only accessible at their most obscure to someone with an Ivy quality college education or Google/Wikipedia. As with Postman and Wallace, this analysis says much more about the analyst than the analyzand.
That's just soo true for my experience, growing up. I indulged unrealistic cartoon for most of my childhood years. As I have grown up, I can't tell you how many fantasies I have till today 25 years. And that fantasies usually spills over my worklife and personal life.. it sucks!
I feel like this might be a bit of a stretch. This isn't to say that I don't think that Archer's heavy use of references isn't leaked to his trouble connecting with people, but I don't know if the one is because of the other.
2:30 - "For the past few seasons, he's been in a coma" - And that's exactly how long the show hasn't been good. Hmm, coincidence? There's a reason that nobody likes to hear other people's dreams, because they're boring. This is no different. 🤦
@@sethiddings7293 yeah I'm kinda with you. Hearing how others' dreams are chaotic but so different from your own is fun. There's a reason some people are dedicated to controlling their dreamscapes
Yeah you're definitely projecting. Archer seems like a TV show because, news flash, it IS one. Pay attention to the other characters and you will see how wrapped up they are in the cultural references too.
I feel like I learned English as my second language through RUclips videos and TV shows entirely. Maybe that’s why I feel odd talking to native speakers sometimes even though I speak English very fluently and almost without an accent:((
Hmm, maybe that's why I have such a hard time dealing with other people: everyone seems to not be able to distinguish reality from fantasy. When I was a kid, I spent all my time playing outside. When inside, I was playing with Lego or reading. I barely watched any TV or movies and watch practically none now either.
6:30 Can you really separate your professional life from your sexual life? People don't stop having sexual desires at work. They also don't necessarily stop having work related responsibilities that they worry about during sex. 10:50 Sterling has no facial or body hair. He has more in common with modern male models than with Burt Reynolds when it comes to looks. 12:35. The most popular commercial of last year didn't have a sex angle. adage.com/video/amazon-alexa-not-everything-makes-cut But yeah. I was definitely a TV baby. I am the only person I know IRL who has seen Time Squad and Megas XLR. But saying that TV ruined Archer, is a stretch. The people he had to interact with IRL during his formative years where all substance abusers and relentless bullies as far as we know. The people he saw on the screen don't really seem to have been any worse than the people he saw in person.
Some of my most embarrassing moments as a kid were when I tried to say a line from a show, game, or heck, even a commercial. Every time, it fell flat and people were like "what's wrong with you?". Ugh, hate it so much. Thanks for reminding me of that.
I'm so glad they brought it back for one last season, in the latest episode when Archer got the robot suit I kind of hope the secret organization they was going against, I wish they would have made it to where Archer when he in the coma that he secretly woke up and they use mind-controlled to have him work for them and that's why I spy agency was so good that would have made the show way better have an arch as being a double agent spy being mind control fighting against his old teamand then finding out he's being mind-controlled would have made the show great
Wrong. Archer vicariously lives through fiction, trying to make fiction become reality. While Abed can tell the difference, but chooses not to act on that difference.
Screenwriter: Hey guys this is "phrasing" thing is a good catchphrase! We should keep using it! Wisecrack: Archer is an empty shell that need meaningless sex to compensate his lack of parental love
Interesting, this puts a whole new perspective on the character for me. Definitely shows the creatives abilities to build a character with such layered nuances.
His dysfunction has nothing to do with television. His dysfunction arises from his upbringing involving a distant, absent mother who barely showed him love, a lack of friends or proper socialization, and the amount of trauma his mother forced him to endure as a child.
Hey, Archer was raised by Woodhouse, and he did his damned best.
I think that if they reveal who Archer's father is at the end of the series, it should be Woodhouse

Now, what sort of mass psychotherapy do we need in order to correct this?
A giant space squid, maybe?
Well, in the 17th century the Enlightenment caused any form of entertainment to be judged by how realistic it is. The Enlightenment, if successfully made into going through a renaissance, might solve this issue (and cause some neccesary democratic revolutions along the way).
Jared: Let's take a look at who raised Archer...TV.
Woodhouse: Am I a joke to you, sir?
Woodhouse: Am I a joke, to sir?
One reason that archer behaves the way he does is because Apparently he’s actually autistic and someone to say people have a real hard time communicating and social boundaries and blurring the lines between reality and TV
I think that Archer has Asperger's, and one of his special interests is television, just like his obsession with guns
I watch this just because I enjoy listening to Jon Benjamin and the cast bounce off each other.
it's just edited like that though. for the first several seasons (and all the way through the present, as far as I know) the actors record their lines separately and then everything is stitched together afterwards. if you think about it, it'd be really hard to have dialogue that snappy even with a *lot* of takes and rehearsals.
If you are isolated and inside a room/house all the time
What I love is that the coma seasons actually worked, what could have been a shark jumping moment actually turned out great
So in a way archer is like Jim carry in the cable guy, he’s mom and dad were not there for him emotionally, and was raised by television. So much of charaters ideas of human interaction, espionage and how the world works is from it.
I just thought that the writers wanted to include a lot of reference humour, but trust Wisecrack to make me feel like an idiot by explaining how a show I've been watching for years is 10x deeper than I ever thought it was trying to be
Also, is Jared back?
It's crazy, I didnt expect this video to be so relatable. I had a really hard childhood growing up, and the TV was my only friend. I was completely socially inept because I never had any example of social cues as I didn't have any role models. As a kid, I couldn't differentiate real life from TV shows. I thought people bragged, flirted, fought, and acted badass in real life the same way they did in tv shows. (Obviously it ended up driving people away more than often than not). Thank you for this vid, I didnt know I needed this, it made me understand my childhood better
Are modern people like Archer?
... Big Bang Theory, with its "references only" humour would indicate - Yes.
Your example for real people being like a TV show is...another TV show?
David Stinnett my example was the most popular show based on popular culture
You know clusters
Shaping popular culture
Unless you think Big Bang is the same as Senfeild , Married with children, all in the family , etc
Unless I’m off about the “Easter egg” and “reference” style of humour when it comes to Gen z?
Archer reflects Gen x “latch key kids” raised on tv with Gen Z humour
why don’t you watch wisecracks video on Big Bang theory to understand my point based on their analysis of that sitcom.
Comparing archer to big bang theory is like comparing apples and AIDS.
Robert Mishler I compared the real life audience who watch Big Bang theory to the character of Archer when it comes to their references based humour.
Following?
Still offended?
You've figured out the ideal music volume level to play over talkover!! Fantastic.
But... Why is Jared here?
With faith, Jared is always here.
ARE YOU COMPLAINING?!
(and ER, friends, and whatever Aaron Sorkin made)
“THE LAST OF JARED”
So happy you did an archer video while still around, Jared
Remember when a character like Archer was a comedic character and not a possible description of a person?
I don’t know. I’ve met a lot of people that eerily resemble these characters.
@@Ken9284 No you haven't.
I love how the ad into this was for Archer's newest season.
I'm gonna miss ya man. May your road be nothing but awesome and epic!
i dont appreciate being called out like that
Archer strangely has a connection to video games as well
I met some of my little sister's friends and I realized they talk like people who learned social skills from online forms and memes. The conversation didn't quite flow. It was like each person was trying to introduce a new topic when it was their turn to speak. They were having a good time, though!
Phrasing.... wait. Are we not doing that anymore?
Seriously
I am NEEDING to use that IRL!
Speaking two different languages doesn’t help...
XD
Woohoo Jared did you tell us that you had some videos made before leaving? What a gift 🎁
"Edible Complex"? Is that a subtle Community reference?
@@katianovakk - Never really heard people say Oedipal instead of Oedipus, threw me off when I heard it a second time from Jared.
That's just soo true for my experience, growing up. I indulged unrealistic cartoon for most of my childhood years. As I have grown up, I can't tell you how many fantasies I have till today 25 years. And that fantasies usually spills over my worklife and personal life.. it sucks!
Would explain his 3 anthology seasons of three eras of television genres 🤔
I got an actual ad for Archer while watching this.
Now that is Flintstone-style.
Welcome Back Jared
He ain't tho
I hope we can say that one day
Enjoy your future endeavors. Thanks for all the great videos and podcasts!
6:37 I got an unskippable HBO ad. Next level irony.
I got an Archer ad! XD
I love hearing people's dreams. Literally anything can happen in them, how is that boring?
@@sethiddings7293 yeah I'm kinda with you. Hearing how others' dreams are chaotic but so different from your own is fun. There's a reason some people are dedicated to controlling their dreamscapes
@@spmil999Or learning that other people have similar dreams which is like having a shared experience.
Yeah you're definitely projecting. Archer seems like a TV show because, news flash, it IS one. Pay attention to the other characters and you will see how wrapped up they are in the cultural references too.
Ayyy Jared's back
"Hei! Jatkat! Tämä sumalainen laskuvarjo klubi?" Gets me every time :,D
I feel like I learned English as my second language through RUclips videos and TV shows entirely. Maybe that’s why I feel odd talking to native speakers sometimes even though I speak English very fluently and almost without an accent:((
Like learning Japanese from anime
For me its that and working in IT. School never helped me much learning English except maybe some basic stuff. What was helping is being German.
Every video with Jared going forward is such a blessing 💖
Did anyone else get an ad for Archer while watching this?
Hmm, maybe that's why I have such a hard time dealing with other people: everyone seems to not be able to distinguish reality from fantasy.
When I was a kid, I spent all my time playing outside. When inside, I was playing with Lego or reading. I barely watched any TV or movies and watch practically none now either.
woahh, its jared
Big props on the Kraftwerk Poster 🤙
I think the title is wrong. ‘How tv makes you a super spy” is more apt.
Just imagine 20 years from now everyone behaves like Archer.
12:35. The most popular commercial of last year didn't have a sex angle. adage.com/video/amazon-alexa-not-everything-makes-cut
But yeah.
I just realized Archer is back. Yes! This is a great show.
I feel personally attacked by this one
Some of my most embarrassing moments as a kid were when I tried to say a line from a show, game, or heck, even a commercial. Every time, it fell flat and people were like "what's wrong with you?". Ugh, hate it so much. Thanks for reminding me of that.
lol
I'm so glad they brought it back for one last season, in the latest episode when Archer got the robot suit I kind of hope the secret organization they was going against, I wish they would have made it to where Archer when he in the coma that he secretly woke up and they use mind-controlled to have him work for them and that's why I spy agency was so good that would have made the show way better have an arch as being a double agent spy being mind control fighting against his old teamand then finding out he's being mind-controlled would have made the show great
season 11 is not confirmed to be the last season.
Alot of kids in modern countries which were in the Soviet Union can partly relate to this.
Archer's animation looks a lot like Henry Cavill
Do not worry, Buffed Cyril can't hurt you:
Buffed Cyril:
So Archer is basically if Abed Nadir became a spy? Nice
Cool cool cool cool cool
Wrong. Archer vicariously lives through fiction, trying to make fiction become reality. While Abed can tell the difference, but chooses not to act on that difference.
So... Archer is basically Abed from Community but as a real spy with a narcissistic complex?
Why is wisecrack playing with our emotions? Pre-recorded or not, the "Hey Wisecrack, Jared here" is still to soon.
11:07 Archer: "Right?!? It’s just like in Gator!"
Screenwriter:
Hey guys this is "phrasing" thing is a good catchphrase! We should keep using it!
Wisecrack:
Archer is an empty shell that need meaningless sex to compensate his lack of parental love
Ayeee Archer!!!
How come not that many people talk about this show?
Completely random fact:
The largest snowflake ever recorded reportedly measured 15 inches (38.1 cm) across.
Some of them are 5-6ft tall.
That's not flake, that's a fucking boulder
14:08 This played during my 9th bathroom break at work. Man I feel called out
It's been 6 months since the start of this pandemic. Is it that hard to start using a good setup with a good camera and... actually stand up?
Lol, no wonder I love this show so much, I was also raised by tv, though it was 80s-90s TV
