YES - I love what he said about limiting his choices of wood and rock and finding a way to make it work. That is what really happens. I have these specific rocks to work with - how to make them look their best. I have these specific pieces of wood to work with - how to make them look their best. What to leave out, what to keep, where to place for maximum impact.

I'm really loving this series of videos. The tanks are all so amazing! I have sort of been "greening" one of my existing aquariums. It's a 75 gallon with a gravel substrate. I didn't even know you could put real plants in one, so I used to have lots of fake plants, but now I keep adding anubias, and java fern to driftwood (and threw out the plastic plants). I was worried that I don't have dirt and sand in it, but now I don't feel so bad about it.

absolutely love this video, i do however have a bit of a nitpick, and its a personal experience thing. I dont think Amano would teach it if he was not certain about it, but any time i have ever had activated carbon in my fish tanks i have had problems. In my first couple of years of aquascaping i had a HUGE problem with Green water. It happened in a season where im busy with work, and did not catch it as it started progressing. I TRIED EVERYTHING. I still have the U.V. Sterilizer i bought which was the biggest one they sold. I dosed hydrogen peroxide, i dosed seachem excel. Any small thing i found on the internet to deal with green water i had tried. On top of all the different products i had to help with it, i was doing 10 gallon water changes almost every single day, this was on a 20 gallon tank so 50% water changes EVERY day. All of it had minimal impact on the production of the green water. It got to the point i nearly exited the hobby. The water changes kept it down to where it was in its formation stage, so cloudy water but i was FED UP!. The entire time i was dealing with it, i had this nagging feeling that it was something to do with the activated carbon in my filter. I dont remember specifically why, but it was just there in the back of my mind. I talked to my LFS multiple times about it, and he was out of solutions to try, and i was at my wits end with the tank. So finally on one of my normal maintenance days, i finally ripped my filter apart and removed the carbon, replacing it with just filter floss. Then continued the regiment of water changes, and treating the water with Hydrogen Peroxide. After two water changes the water was clear, and it stayed that way. I wish i had gone with my gut feeling to begin with, because it would have saved me a lot of time and some money.
I dont know why it worked, but it 100% did. I have not used Carbon in ANY tank since that time. I think that this might be one area of fish tank science that is absolutely ripe for a deep dive, and also is 100% going to be a controversial topic, as the actual results of using activated carbon are obviously not understood. I can though understand how having it in for the first 30 days could be beneficial as a way to absorb access nutrients, and other chemicals that might be getting added at that time. However, i have done at least 10 new scapes after having solved this issue, and none of them ever had carbon in them.
I would really love to find someone who has done a deep dive of carbon in the aquarium.

Someone needs to make a school of aquarium design. Jeff could be a department head professor. I think MD is definitely a grad student working on his PhD, and will likely join the staff as a tenure track professor as soon as he graduates. Right now, he only has a few more classes to go before he can start his dissertation, but once that's all taken care of, he will definitely be tenure track material. Welcome to the department of Aquarium Sciences and Design at King's College, Cambridge MD!

Oh wow!! Thank you MD! This is beautiful! Jeff, I hope you take "copying" as a compliment! After 2 years of research & budgeting I'm about ready to pull the trigger on having my first tank since I was a kid and this style is really impactful and looks like the fish are so happy! Can someone tell me would Apistos or Rams be happy living under those rock ledges AND I'm always up for a good road trip around the Western USA and I've been thinking about "harvesting" my own hardscape but where to go and how to know if a rock is safe or not? All my research said was "no copper"!

Rams are awesome, just remember they like it hotter than a lot of other tropical fish. I keep my Ram tank about 82 degrees, so there are some limitations on what you can do with them. I think they're awesome and will probably always keep some. Temperature is why you'll hear occasionally that Rams are challenging fish to keep... sometimes people don't realize they need it to be a little warmer than the "green zone" on the thermometer 😊

@@maxredd6207 Thank you very much for sharing that, I read several times about their range but it's good to know from someone with practical experience that they like the higher end. What kind of rams do you keep? Have you had them breed? (LOL! I know! Lofty goals for someone who is waiting for Black Friday to purchase her hard goods!)

@@GenXHeart German Blues and Gold Head Electric Blues so far, but I've got plans to keep others in the future! As for breeding, I haven't tried it yet. They're kind of the centerpiece fish in a 45 gallon community tank along with the Honey Gouramis. I may try a breeding project down the road, but I'm going to start with Bettas, which are my other fish love :)

@@maxredd6207 Sounds similar to the tank I hope to create! I love betas too! Breeding them looks like crazy work but has to be SO fun to see what you get! Earlier today I bundled up my strawberry runners and lowered them in the tank similar to how I usually do to root spider plant shoots and my beta cracked me up, checked them out, apparently he approves and has a new hangout spot. lol Like an XL patio umbrella.

Hey md! Absolutely love your videos, I’ve learnt so much from you and put it towards my own tanks. I now work at a Maidenhead too as a result of this! I was thinking a good idea for a video could be looking at viewer submissions of their tanks and / issues, and giving them tips and pointers on how to improve, or any answers to their queries. Kind of like a monthly q and a! Would be really useful

Can you make a scape for clownbotia? I'm very curious what you make and what kind of fish you put with them.
I ask because I really want to have them and hope you can inspire me for a scape for them.
