  • How to build your rod from scratch. Follow along as Scott Graves designs, fabricates, and assembles another fun hot rod out of a 1937 GMC pickup. Power comes from a 1962 235 inline 6, mates to a S10 T5, and sends it to a pair of 7.50-17 BF Goodrich tires thru the 3.08 geared rearend. Everything was fabricated in the his shop area you see with just a few basic tools.

    I like the way you did the motor mounts too. Those old 235 engines love motorcycle carbs, especially those old Klein Constant Velocity carbs you used to find on early Hondas. Measure your port, and match it up to the carbs. Replacement units for big twins and singles are the best way to go!
    Three Corvair carbs, on a manifold like you built works really, really well, too! Remember to put in a balance tube, or you'll go through six layers of Hell getting it to idle!

    I too noticed the super clean shop and came to the conclusion it had just been finished. I also noticed how it became more and more cluttered as the project went on. I also noticed you are damn good at sheetmetal fab and fab in general. Nice job, and that's a fine lookin boy you have there.

    Great slide show. It shows how much work goes into it. I like the axle in front of the radiator, it's like a chopper with 4 wheels.

    Thanks!
    To quote my hubby's previous replies on his father's rod - "The floor of the cab is channeled around the frame rails to match, cab just sits over the frame, rubber bushings at mounting points for isolation."
    Yes, it is street legal, licensed and driven. What he did to get it that way- you ask? He built it as seen above & applied for a hobbiest plate offered here in WI - that's it as far as I know. - Leah

    i own and operate a restoration street rod shop,i do it all except upholstry.i know how many hrs it takes so dont feel bad.theres times when i wish was threw for the customer,because it gets crazy at times,with many many hrs.im doin a 55 chevy straight axle gasser.full race,no street for this car.just tail lights,and ignition wires.gutted and it still has 100's of hrs invested in it.ive got about 500 in it now,its gonna take about 8 hundred to get to the top of the hill.good luck,dont give up!

    Well The only thing I got To say He's got to be a Youg fella . Any one over 55 would never get out of it or in it with out a rubber pad to throw out on the concrete to get in or out on ! "Good job on the truck" .. "It 's one to be proud of" ! Al

    So he has a clean freaking shop! Big hairy deal! Its his freaking shop! He can be however he wants in it! Go build your own freaking shop, and be however you want in yours!
    Love the truck, love the concept, love the engine choice, LOVE that crazy header / intake manifold combo!
    Its obvious you have no small skills in fabrication. Automotive fabrication needs a clean shop and a level floor.

  • @cpmotors
    @cpmotors  17 лет назад

    Not sure if you can see it but the floor of the cab is channeled around the frame rails to match. It leaves a little more leg/head room for when the top gets chopped, and makes it a little more comfy on the legs instead of being stretched out straight in front of you.

  • @cpmotors
    @cpmotors  16 лет назад

    The main reason not to use the original frame is it would probably be alot more work to Z it low enough to get the look, and its not as rigid.
    Thanks for the comments!

    Some absoloutley superb fabrication there!!I know its a rat rod,but I think the cab would look far better painted,even if it's just satin black,love the interior and the aircraft seats,I have all the tooling and the experience to build,but alas no longer a garage or my health.

  • @SuperKONR

    I'm learning a lot while restoring it, it's actually a lot of fun. I'm doing everything myself. I promised myself that my next car is going to be a rat rod so I won't have to worry about bodywork haha. Sounds like a cool project you're building, I've always wanted to build a gasser. Good luck with it, sounds awesome!

    Yup, wider is better XD
    I doubt it would be unstable, it just looks better with the wheels out farther than the sides of the cab IMHO. I can appreciate the work that went into it, I've been restoring a 65 mustang for the past two years and it's still not even clost to being done lol.

    It depends on the amperage of the 110. Most small 110V powered welders can weld upto 3/16" thick steel at the most, so that could be a limitation.

  • @Mr1963chevy
    @Mr1963chevy 12 лет назад

    @waterwart My dad owns a 1945 studebaker bullet nose, we bought it in junkyard condition and fixed it up, We have a 289 small block engine inside of it with a few mods and it pumps out 450 horsepower
    We had a very hard time trying to fit it inside, we have to re locate the radiator because the 289 is nearly to big for inside the hood

  • @cpmotors

    The buckets are the original steel bases out of his '51 GMC , as is the axle. The spindles are '51 GM passenger car. I'm not sure about the springs.

  • @cpmotors

    That's an interesting question Owen. I'm not sure what an engineer would say about it's braking/engine position, maybe it could be classified as a mid-engine chassis?! Brake testing has gone good, no mishaps or issues so far. It actually stops pretty good. What in particular are you wanting to know?

  • @cpmotors
    @cpmotors  17 лет назад

    Ouch!
    Have you looked at the video of the '31 roadster on my channel? That was his first attempt at a "real" hot rod. I guess I didnt realize pre 35's are the only thing counting as real hot rods. The fascination, as you put it, for him was the price of a 37 GMC, which is just a *little* less than any A tin.
    He is looking for an A sedan at the moment, have any laying around?

    Hell yes! No stupid computer controlled electronic roll litigation. No traction control. No nav system. No computer controlled climate. No park assist. In fact, no anything that allows for a total idiot to be able to drive. Apart from that, no external plastic crap that is being passed as automotive fashion, like fender panels, ground effects, bumpers, and skirts. Automakers need to take a clue from you. No everyone wants to drive a computer with a cheap plastic body on it. New cars suck!

    Nice work. Is there a reason you didn't Z the front frame rails? I have a 37 Chevy with a 59A flathead I built in '06 very similar to your truck. I Z'd it three inches just behind the firewall so I could mount the radius rods under the frame. Not being a dick, just curious. The stovebolt looks sweet. Thought about a straight 8, but I had the flat motor laying around so I figured I'd put it to good use.
