    Lyrics
    "Cleanin Out My Closet"
    Where's my snare?
I have no snare in my headphones. There you go
    Yeah... yo, yo
Have you ever been hated or discriminated against?
I have; I've been protested and demonstrated against
Picket signs for my wicked rhymes, look at the times
Sick as the mind of the motherfucking kid that's behind
All this commotion emotions run deep as oceans, exploding
Tempers flaring from parents just blow 'em off and keep going
Not taking nothing from no one give 'em hell long as I'm breathing
Keep kicking ass in the morning and taking names in the evening
Leave 'em with a taste as sour as vinegar in they mouth
See they can trigger me, but they'll never figure me out
Look at me now; I bet you're probably sick of me now ain't you mama?
I'mma make you look so ridiculous now
    I'm sorry mama!
I never meant to hurt you!
I never meant to make you cry; but tonight
I'm cleaning out my closet (one more time)
    I said I'm sorry mama!
I never meant to hurt you!
I never meant to make you cry, but tonight
    I'm cleaning out my closet
Ha! I got some skeletons in my closet
And I don't know if no one knows it
So before they throw me inside my coffin and close it
I'mma expose it; I'll take you back to '73
    Before I ever had a multi-platinum-selling CD
I was a baby, maybe I was just a couple of months
My faggot father must have had his panties up in a bunch
'Cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye
No I don't. On second thought I just fucking wished he would die
I look at Hailie, and I couldn't picture leaving her side
Even if I hated Kim, I'd grit my teeth and I'd try
To make it work with her at least for Hailie's sake
    I maybe made some mistakes
But I'm only human, but I'm man enough to face them today
What I did was stupid, no doubt it was dumb
But the smartest shit I did was take them bullets outta that gun
'Cause I'da killed him; shit I would've shot Kim and him both
It's my life, I'd like to welcome y'all to "The Eminem Show"
    I'm sorry mama!
I never meant to hurt you!
I never meant to make you cry; but tonight
I'm cleaning out my closet (one more time)
    I said I'm sorry mama!
I never meant to hurt you!
I never meant to make you cry, but tonight
    I'm cleaning out my closet

The man had a hard life. No amount of fame or money can erase that. He always got a lot of slack for his music but the man is super talented. No one can deny that. And I so respect him for how honest he is about himself and how he feels.

    HEADLIGHTS! HEADLIGHTS! HEADLIGHTS!
YOU HAVE TO DO HEADLIGHTS NEXT! It is the same story from the other side of growing up. It is no longer the "anger of youth", but the "reflection of age". It really lays out just how a bad relationship can have life-long impact on people. And even Em admits in the song that it is an "apology" over the fact the relationship with his mother is a difficult one.

When Em gets into this "heart on the sleeve" type of pen, it simply STUNS you at how emotional it can get. Especially when he is basically laying out his entire background for the world to see on full display. It is a talent that is extremely rare to find in ANY genre. But when you do, you can't help but latch onto it because of how amazing it is to come across.
And it should be pointed out that Em had to get this off of his chest because it was simply eating him up inside by not expressing himself. He clearly didn't want this to be considered a "dis against his mother just to dis her". He knew that talking about her was going to put her in a bad light, but he had to get through it for his own well-being. A case of "someone catching shrapnel", but not a "direct attack" against her.

If I’m remembering correctly Em’s mom sued Eminem for defamation, but Eminem had records proving that what he was saying/rapping about was true from his medical files to I think police reports.
It’s heartbreaking to hear someone who’s supposed to love, care, and protect you tell you that they wish you were dead instead of someone else. When I was 6 I heard a mother (one of my former neighbors) tell her 6 year old son “you’re the one that should have died not the dog” and my heart shattered for the boy because not only did he realize his mother didn’t want or care about what happened to him, but his only source of affection was gone and never coming back. It still bothers me 24 years later.

I can completely respect the fact that Eminem doesn't want to perform this song. This song is extremely real in regards to how Em felt at this chapter of his life, but it's been a long time since then. People can grow and change, and clearly he's a lot older and more mature than he was when he put this song out. I will always love this song for what it is. It's a simple song with a clear message, but it's so emotionally complex that there's no doubt for a second in your mind that he's telling the truth here. Real as can be.

  • @sumonjamal1653

There was a lot of controversy around Eminem's lyrics, regardless of his race... rap music has been a black man's art form (for the most part) and Eminem associated w/ the hip hop culture, period.
His mom sued him for the first 2 records... his school bully who beat him into a coma as a kid sued him... The Vice President Dick Cheney's (in 2001 til 2008) wife Lynne Cheney went before the US congress and CONDEMNED Eminem for his "misogyny" ... LGBTQ rights went after him cos of his use of the word 'f----t'...
So yeah, Eminem had a lot of haters back in 2000 to 2002 when this record came out.

Which is crazy, because before He showed up hip hop artists were talking shit about women, gays, and all sorts of shit and no one batted an eye. It wasn't until Eminems music started getting to middle class americas ears that they started to care.

I wouldn’t say that this is his best song, and I’m aware that he regrets making this song, but I personally feel like this is his most important song that he’s done. You see so much of what made him who he is and what he’s gone through. It gives so much context to the rest of his music. It was also such a brave song to do. How many other artists straight up say “this is what I came from and what shaped me, so deal with it.”? It’s hard enough to open up to a close friend, he did it on an international platform.

Seeing how my wife's parents pulled some similar shit as em's mom did, due to their narcissistic personality disorder... I can totally understand the level of hate he felt for his mother. I see it live in my own home, and couldn't possibly judge. So, this song seems to me just like a creative outlet for his trauma and frustrations. The woman shouldn't even have dared to press defamation charges, when he probably just publicly described her mistakes towards him.

Not sure, if you are aware, the Nathan he sings about, is his half brother, who is 14 years younger than him. When he was 16 years old, he landed in foster care (!) so Eminem gained legal guardianship of his little brother. He goes by Nathan Mathers now, because Eminem might be his brother, but is like his father for him. Eminem took in the child of Ex and of her sister, too, adopted them. Because of his shitty childhood, he made sure, that the children in his life are taken care of and loved. One of his children came out as NB, without any issue, because they knew, Eminem would love them, no matter what, they are his kid.

Eminem is talking about the 1980s and 1990s where conservatives and moderate Democrats like Tipper Gore were yelling from the balcony that rap music should be banned. It happens to a less extent now, but back then it was everywhere. Listen to White America for more about it. And yes, it had a huge racial overtone. For the record, Tipper Gore is the reason we have Parental Advisory stickers on certain albums.

I personally never witnessed the hatred for Eminem cause all my friends loved him and my parents never cared what music I'm listening to ... I was a teenager in 99 though and politicians and mainstream media definitely didn't like him. They were simply using his name and pretending to be outraged for the publicity.
Modern day equivalent would be clout chasing for views. The Eminem was WAY too big though and the hate coming from the people only encouraged us to like him even more!
And he came at a time when we still had a void from Big and Pac dying, and for a lot of people, myself included, we could relate more to Em than we could most other rappers. Like I was a huge rap fan, but I'm white and at that time, white rappers weren't taken seriously. You had to be a gangster, or at least pretend to be, and Em spoke for us poorer, drug addicted white boys.
Eventually though his music reached everyone, and songs like this really resonated with people and widened his audience.

This is one of the songs that hits hard with me. My biological mother was psychologically and emotionally abusive to me. I finally cut her out of my life in 2014 and, as far as I'm aware, she has yet to accept what she did to me. As to whether I care about her crying or hurting, I don't. She didn't care how I felt, so I'm not going to care about how she feels.

I know this is late, and maybe down the comments someone has already said but, when Em starts off by saying, have you ever been hated or discriminated against? I have, I've been protested and demonstrated against, this literally happened and hundreds of thousands took to the streets to protest against him worldwide. What they didn't get, and what many fairies today definitely don't get, is just because you don't like it, doesn't mean you can trump someone's free speech and right to express themselves.

My man please listen to Chris cornell! His lyrics are always deep and beautifully written, he composed so much amazing instrumentals in his music and his vocals are powerful, sludging, beautiful, haunting, powerful. Soft, metal, clenching, blues, desperate, pop, love, loss, garage, everything you could want from an artist he was! Please please dive into him and you will be amazed every single time you listen to him. Decades of new and diverse sounds and melodies. His covers of other artists were amazing and he would cover HIS OWN music in a new and different way time after time! Your musical journey will forever be incomplete with Chris' voice, art, and humble loving beautiful personality painted over your heart and mind!

People went after him because he was bringing more white people into listening to rap, and since he also had violent or explicit lyrics, a bunch of white parents were getting mad. Same way that they were about rock 1 or 2 generations before that.

I'd never heard of munchausen syndrome before I heard this as a kid and honestly, abuse in all forms is horrendous but to be constantly told your sick, sometimes even being poisoned, drugged or having things broken to gratify the person who is supposed to be your care giver. To make them look like the angel who has to look after such a burden of a child. That stuff is next level fucked

At like 3:10 you start talking about how you can't believe the amount of hate Eminem got from the public when he started out, and you figure that cause he's white rapper in a predominantly black industry that he would be praised for that, but that shows the amount of growth society has had since Eminem first blew up and that's amazing to see, but also sort of sad that we live in a society where we recognize if your'e a white male then it shouldn't be hard to succeed (and not to get into all that, but is true in literally every other case aside from Eminem). You also said that you don't' want to make it about race , which I get cause it is a hot button topic, and no one wants to ever come off racists, but sadly that's exactly what it was about. Back in the late 90's early 00's rap wasn't widely received like it is today, it wasn't what we call "mainstream" but it was starting to make it's way into pop culture more and more. Even still rap was ultimately sort of an underground thing, and essentially every rapper was black (when you look at people who were making it big at that time, aside from maybe 2 others). So when this skinny white kid with bleach blonde hair came onto the scene people looked at it him like he was a joke. The public basically said he was trying to appropriate the industry and had no place doing what he was doing and there was no way he could be even a little good cause he was white. Then there was the whole "rap is all about violence and killing" so parents of white kids really lost it cause they automatically assumed that cause he was white rapping about what he was that their kids would do exactly that. Like I remember when he did blow up seeing it all over the news parents protesting his records, (and a ton of other musicians) and that eventually pled to parental advisors going on albums.

The fact that Eminem was white was exactly why he got so much hate from conservatives in the late 90s, early 00s. If I remember right, Tipper Gore (Al Gore's wife) was particularly raging a campaign against him and Marilyn Manson. We can look back on everything now and think about how overreactive everyone was, but back then, these artists were new and we'd never had people push such boundaries in music before. The Eminem Show album gets into politics a little more, especially since some of it was his response to how 9/11 was handled. But the song White America really talks about how people hated him. "See, the problem is I speak to suburban kids..."
The controversy just made everyone love him more lol

in his early years, he didn't give a shit.. he went in on gays, big time, he rapped about how much he hated women, that's why he had 'protests and demonstrations' against him, true af.. he was banned from radio stations, one of his songs had him arrested (Kim I think, I'm going off memory here, I was like 18/19 when he blew up)

I remember the hate. Like I'm from Ireland so definitely in the 90s there were very few black people in our country in the 90s. And there was kind of a backlash against his music because of the content. I feel like it just made us want to buy it more. Nothing sells albums like a bit of controversy. Also the 90s was a time when music got blamed for everything, then they moved on to video games AND music. Not parenting or social situations.. Because of course no one wants to blame social situation because that would fall back on the government yeah..
