Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
Whenever I feel like I hate my life and it isn't fair I watch videos like this and give thanks that I didn't turn out like this. I spent the summer of 2006 on my couch unable to eat or sleep while self detoxing. $40000 in credit card debt after spending every penny on hydrocodone and when I ran out of money I could've either stolen and got heroin or gotten clean and I chose clean. I went bankrupt, lost my house, had no car but I eventually went to classes, started a new career, bought a new house, joined a gym and got better. Still, these people could've been me and I never forget.
Or I could have went to a methadone/Suboxone clinic and continued to get high and not have to go in debt or be around other addicts etc and continue a completely normal life just take your medication daily I choose that over drugs and the life that comes with street drugs best decision I've ever made I'm married have a house multiple vehicles land money etc

I’m glad I’m living in Romania, in a simple village and I’m grateful that I have God in my heart. What addiction and sin is doing to people, is incredible.
I am a recovering heroin addict coming up on 10 years clean. Everyone posts videos of Kensington and it’s sad. It’s like Methadone Mile in Boston where I’m from. I’m thankful I don’t have to live that life day in and day out anymore. It’s a sad existence. Every single day I chose me and not drugs. Stay humble, stay blessed everyone. ❤

I am a Latino living in my third world country. My father lived in Philadelphia in the mid 50's. He studied medicine and became a world class cardiologist there! I imagine he walked that avenue. He sure would be shocked to see this.
I just came across these vids today and I was just wondering where are all the Latinos at here. This is what some of the streets in California look like too. Same thing, a gang of blacks and whites living on the streets in squalor, but you don't see many Latinos on the streets there either. Interesting because I'm pretty sure the Latinos in California are starting to out number the other citizens. They won't be able to call themselves a minority anymore.

I hope all the people struggling with alcohol or any other addiction to break the habit for good. I personally grew up to an alcoholic parents and cocaine flooded neighborhood. I endured many struggles growing up. I was addicted to alcohol during my adulthood years and barely survived cocaine, and I hit rock bottom in all of life aspects financially, physically, relationship, career etc. I'm very lucky that I have met my Muslim neighbor in Brooklyn who saw me breaking down one day and was by my side and never left me as if I'm his brother. I'm very thankful that I decided to go to the Mosque and converted to Islam. I've got my life purpose back now I'm married and I have a beautiful daughter and I'm financially stable and more than ever mentally and spiritually stable. It's the five prayers. It's Allah. Never trust the media and what has been said about Islam. Politics is a dirty business and all they cared about is money. The whole system is set up over the dollar without any regard to your suffering or addictions. Peace and love!! Never give Up.

The accumulated human misery in these videos is just breathtaking. Every one of these sad souls is someone's mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter. The pain and cruelty and inadequacy and abuse that got them to this state is just horrifying.

I had something awesome about the USA before watching this video. I found it totally different. In my country, there is nothing like that even below 1%. The family system in the country and everyone cares about his or her family members. I live far better condition more than 100% than that of it. Now I feel proud.

Hello, I am French, I stumbled upon your video by chance and I am very shocked to see the number of drug addicts in the streets, I imagine the daily lives of the people who live there. I knew that in the United States the image of drugs is very negative but at this point I am really very shocked to see so many, it is not what we are shown in American movies.
In France we do not have streets with people at the edge of the streets in the process of drugging, they hide, we do not see them or very little.
This is not common in America or even Philadelphia, which is the city I was born and raised in, and still live in. Kensington has always been an area unlike any other that anybody has ever seen. Unfortunately, in the past year or so, we have another area of the city, Broad and Snyder (which is not far from where I live), which is starting to look like this, but it's not as bad.

Opioids were legalized as prescription drugs by the government itself with the FDA, then as the legal drug was denounced as addictive and forbidden, the victims were then thrown into the street to deal with the drug dealers, no help from the state other than despise. What I have noticed is that homelessness and poverty can trap anyone. The people in these videos are from many different cultural backgrounds, and of all ages, from teenager to very elderly. I have listened to many stories from people who find themselves living on the streets. so many of them where living a normal life, earning a good living or living at home, until a fall out. An injury. An illness. A job closures. Economic shift. Natural disasters like flood, hurricane, fire, A death of loved one etc... Any of these things can take a person out. I have not met someone homeless because of laziness or because they were bad people. Life is tough for many.
I noticed that most of these are taken in the same location, but it is still a large area of the city, and getting worse. What will they do about it? This should not get into a political blame game. It's here and needs urgent attention from some gutsy people, who will understand the real issues and be dedicated to actually helping.

This is truly heartbreaking, no human being should live in this kind of conditions, the pain and suffering behind it is monstrous. It hurts to see how drugs can take over your life and reduce you to this. I wish society took more seriously these situations, these people get dehumanized so much when in reality all they need is help.

@BEHEDETY Trust me I know,to be transparent I was one of those people stuck in that cycle for 13 years living on the streets,under overpasses,or in abandoned buildings until I woke up one day and decided my life was worth more.Its not something anyone could of ever done for me or you can for someone else.I was on Macklemore Obama special Presciption for change,I'm in University of michagans Criminology Texts and you can Google some of my story on Getty/Google by putting my Name although spelled wrong Reggy/Camden NJ.I got clean In Kensington on one of its most notorious streets (Somerset).An ex addict who just wanted to help bought an abandoned building their and let's anyone with a desire to stay clean stay here,which is far from extravagant.Literally an abandoned building the patrons fixed up ourselves for somewhere safe to lay our heads.I spent first 6months sleeping on a hardwood floor with 2 blankets and had to walk across the street to soup kitchen for meals bc of course using his own money the man couldn't feed everyone.i have been to rehabs up and down the coast but none worked or rather I worked them pretty much into getting whatever Presciption drugs I wanted at the time *oh I have anxiety need xanax,have bad hips so I def need methadone etc.* it wasn't helping I always ended up back on streets weeks after release from rehab or jails.It takes an immense will to change and finding that shred of self worth and building upon it which happens very slowly at first but gets way easier as time passes.Today I am 9 years clean and sober,have am adopted 7 yr old daughter,engaged,became a machinist and been same company (in Philly still) for past 5 years.And this past week we just bought our first condo far away from the madness in suburbs of NJ.So some of us can and do make it although I'd hate to say I am the rarity,more often this ends in prison overdose and death.Just love the people who matter to you and be their for them wo encouraging or promoting their addiction in any way no $ no shelter whatever.Until they hit rock bottom and have need to change they won't as long as theirs an open faucet so to speak we will bleed that well dry.But this is 100% a personal,mental,struggle where we put handcuffs on ourselves and we are the only ones with the key to get them off!

I lived in a plyboard house growing up, heated water in a 55 gallon drum with wood that we had to cut up to burn. Poured water in a silver galvinized tub, and shared it with my sister for our bath. Cooked outside, went to the bathroom in an out house. My life was not perfect, and always felt without. I had a choice to take drugs or get a job at 15, to help my family and make a better life for us. I sure didnʻt choose drugs. I made a choice to not ne selfish!

By every measure the world is better today than it's ever been before. Fewer people live in poverty than ever before, people live longer than ever, infant mortality is lower than ever, access to education and creating personal wealth has never been greater for women and POC. But all that positive stuff is boring. The media and liberals won't get your dollars if they don't create division and pit us against each other. There will always be challenges to confront (opioid crisis, climate change, the media, etc.), but as long as we stay centered and work together (instead of blaming each other) we can really help these poor folks.

Sometimes when I see these people it seems so surreal that it feels like a movie. It looks like the film's director is going to say, "Cut..." and the actors get up, take a drink, and let's go to the next take. Terrible...horror, to say the least.
