  • An overdrawn, emotional exploration of my favorite aspect of Ojamajo Doremi. Arguably the first video on RUclips to talk about the series to it's fullest extent (and hopefully not the last).

I know this vid is 4 years old by now.. But it's seriously one of my favorites. This analysis whole heartedly made me shed a tear at the end of it the first time I had seen it. I began not even knowing what Ojamajo Doremi was, and ended it absolutely charmed by this lovely series.. It introduced me to one of my favorite series of all time, and I'm genuinely really grateful for it, as sappy as that sounds. Hands down, very well done video essay and an insightful look into the wonder that is Ojamajo Doremi! ♡♡♡

  • @ojamajo83
    @ojamajo83 5 лет назад +391

I repeat: this video is perfect. Everything is well explained, argued, and defended. Rewatching some scenes have put a little tinkling in the eye. I have defended and will defend the animated body and soul because it conveys relevant and important messages.
And I'm often cold with most American fans who defend the 4kids Dub, it makes me happy that other fans like you defend the anime for what it really is: a masterpiece of the Japanese animation. I have nothing more to say except:
Thank you for this video and happy birthday to Ojamajo Doremi. 20 years is huge and it is celebrated with dignity.

    • @aikolee
      @aikolee 3 года назад +4

I will say this though I would've never discovered the original anime early in my childhood without the 4kids dub despite the fact that it was ruined by american censorship. As it was I still enjoyed it

    • @DropsOfIndigo
      @DropsOfIndigo 3 года назад +4

@@aikolee As I've grown, I've personally become less of a 4Kids hater. Sure, the censorship was stupid at times and did take some charm from the show, not to mention the poor distribution and marketing that plagues Magical Girls in America, but you have to give them at least a little credit. For a lot of us, it was basically "Baby's first anime." Granted, mine was actually Sailor Moon, but my memories of that are vague because I was so young at the time. Without discovering 4Kids at age 11, I may never have never been introduced to Tokyo Mew Mew, Winx or DoReMi, which I still love to this day. Of course, the original is much better and, as OP said, a materpiece of Japanese animation, but I still give 4Kids their credit for introducing many people to the show and opening the door to the original. I mean, I can't be the only one who started searching for more when it went off the air and then fell in love with the original.
Plus, the voice acting really wasn't terrible, the actors just could have done with a better script.

One of things about doremi’s past is her relationship with her mother. And it’s the fact that her mother wanted her to be a perfectionist at piano. Doremi who was only five had so much pressure it’s probably why she feels useless sometimes because of what her mother did to her. She felt like she destroyed her child’s confidence and I think doremi’s past life is why she lost so much confidence and to gain it back

    • @CaribouCoon
      @CaribouCoon  5 лет назад +49

That's a very good connection I didn't make. I really enjoyed her relationship to her mother too, especially that bond they formed as mothers. I just couldn't find an ergonomic place to include it at the time (probably should've been when mentioning how inadequate she feels). Thank you!

I agree with him on this one that’s such a good explaination of why she is so self deprecating. A scene that I love yet shows her acting like this is in episode 12 we’re she and Seki have a heart to heart about her helping others in the class and how great of a person she is despite her grades and she brushed off the comment like it’s nothing. She does it a lot actually and her past with her mother makes perfect sense that way.

Hi. You might recognize my name from the fansub credits from Doremi-Fansubs. As someone who has been tinkering with this show for the better part of 12 years, I just wanted to say that in this video perfectly encapsulates everything that makes this show magnificent--the characters.
You have done such a fantastic job of breaking the characters down and articulating what makes them not only likeable, but relatable. This show has impacted my life in a way that I don't feel can be properly explained with a simple RUclips comment, but I hope your video will convince others to give this show a chance.
I know the show can be difficult to locate since it only has unofficial English fansubs, but it is absolutely worth every single episode. Onpu has always been my favorite since day 1, but I love how you were able to describe what makes each of the girls special. Doremi really is the glue that holds the group together.
Thank you for putting this video together. I feel that it has lit a fire under my butt in regards to working on the revised episodes.

I’m so excited a RUclipsr is discussing Ojamajo in depth. My sister and I grew up watching this show and made us love anime and storytelling in general. We as 10 year olds watched a few episodes on 4Kids before hunting down all the fansub episodes online on our family’s desktop (this was back in the mid 2000s so it was a hunt!). We infected the computer with so many viruses while watching on those anime torrent sites lol. Aiko and Momoko’s backstories are my favorite storylines.

  • @LouisDesitter

"Episode 1 features pretty much every one of Doremi's characteristics. From the clumsiness, to the steak." That one sentence cracked me up so bad for some reason.
Masterful video, this series has been a big part of my childhood. I'm French, so we were lucky to have the whole series dubbed, and it's fairly better than 4kids, I can tell you that. There's always been something very comforting, very deep about this colourful show of little girls doing magic. It's always played with my expectations, such as how Season 4 was looking to be very silly and joking around all the time, and when the serious stuff came in, it slapped me in the face so hard, especially that last episode. Watching goofy Doremi crumbling down like that, it was harsh man.
I think what I also liked about the show were the supporting characters, humans or witches. Majo Rika slowly warming up to those noisy children and seeing the good in having the least talented apprentice of all time. Oyadidje finding his true call in life, and atoning for his crimes. And all the students growing up in their own ways, and even having their own little arcs like Tamaki or Kayoko. Pop also had her own shining moments, being Hana's big sister and learning quite a few lessons about maturity herself.
I think one of my favourite episodes was with Pop wanting to learn the piano, and the whole story unfolding of how Doremi learned to play her go-to instrument. Not in the warmth of friendship with Hazuki... but under the bitterness of her mother's crushed dreams. The fact that she manages to pull herself out of that trauma for the sake of her little sister, and to say to her mom that she's okay, that she doesn't hold anything against her... man, that was powerful.
Thank you for doing this video. May it convince many others to give this wonderful little show a watch !

The ending is the most touching thing ever. Not wanting to move onto something new because you're afraid of losing certain things or, even people.

I’ve waited a bit to make this comment, but here it goes. I first watched Ojamajo Doremi as a child, and I loved it. Once I got to have internet, I came to know there were more seasons of it, so I watched whatever I could online. I remember having to move a lot as a kid, and one time - when I graduated sixth grade, just like doremi, I actually had to leave a lot of dear and close friends behind. That made the end of the series hit A LOT HARDER, since it was basically my life too.
Now I’ve graduated university and I’ve become a full fledged adult, and still Doremi is very very close to my heart. I don’t fear calling this anime the most influential on my life growing up.
I come back to this video from time to time, because I love how it goes through each character. It’s very well made, and brings me back to those simpler times.
I’ll always remember wanting to be a witch as a kid. Now I understand the value in choosing to be human instead.

    Great video as always,
From someone that had to move from Spain to the US and then back it's just so strange, when you get there you can only think of coming back home you know that this is not where you are meant to be, but when you finally feel like this new place could truly be the life you are meant to have, it just changes back again to the place you've missed all those years but everything has changed, the people that you used to know they have changed like yourself and you just don't seem to click with them like you used to and that makes you feel so confused and sad, like if you were a foreigner in your own county, you just find yourself there in the middle of this strange place that you swear you used to call your home without any clear idea of what future to pursue and going back to thinking about the life you had............This hit close home is easy to get lost yearning to the pass instead of embracing the present.

Even after I watched it I watched again and again and every time I started to watched it again the more I understand it and that tears that I dropped from my eyes never stops with each time I watch
I even could say that I don’t want this show to stop
I know it’s not that popular but I like to see it...

She is loved. Truly. Truly!!! Oh how much love Doremi gives and how my heart aches to see her distraught. Honestly they're all just kids but life is never perfect, you know? Yet they all persevere.
I will always be grateful that this video helped me find this gem of a series to watch. I'll probably keep coming back to rewatch haha! Happy! Lucky~

I love this so much, Doremi had always been and always be my favorite character, she is so relatable and funny and so so kind and she doesn’t even realize it. Sometimes I feel like the show doesn’t even let her see how truly important she is.
But she’s always so willing to show OTHERS how important THEY are, I saw people describe her as selfish and my reaction is always “you obviously didn’t watch the show” because she is the most selfless character there is! Sure sometimes they paint are selfish for the comedy, but when it truly matters? This girl will always put others first and I admire that

I think Hazuki's sense of humor does stem from how supportive yet vacant her parents are.
She's good-natured and honest, so expressing her positivity comes natural to her. She struggles with being honest when she receives something negatively but feels it was with good intentions. She's understanding, so seeing someone's genuine attempt at humor and getting where it comes from will make her want to receive it well and give her own positive reinforcement that she gets so gratefully.
She might not understand the faux pas of SOS's gags, since she's got nobody to learn it from. She understand it's humor, but she didn't have anybody to act as a model for what's received poorly.
Of course, it's mainly an expression of what an absolute sweet-heart she is, but it's hard not to see in it the influence of how she receives and gives love.

This show was my life.. i spent my childhood watching recordings of it that my grandma in japan would record and send to the states for me because i loved this show. Rewatching it as an adult made me cry so bad. I also had several halloweens dressed as doremi as a kid. I had so much of the toy merch and i was just obsessed as a kid. This show was my life. I think looking now that maybe the reason i wanted to learn piano as a kid was influenced by this.

With the final hour of Halloween approaching, I originally planned on watching a horror movie.
But here I am, watching an equally lengthy video about a show with not-so-scary rainbow-colored cutesy witches, which as a kid I secretly kept watching at my grandma's house each monday after school, which only happened to be dubbed until Season 2 in my country, and which I didn't even realize had such great themes and characters.
I aimed for feelings of intense scare this evening, but instead got the opposite kind.
Kudos, this eerily good review kept me glued to my seat for other reasons instead.

3 and finally comment you’re so right about hana! She never got annoying even when she was stressing out the girls, her actions were always justified so I never truly got mad at her and because she still had the maturity of a three-year-old I never got upset with her for not thinking things through because a lot of times she was learning the situation, not only as an 11-year-old but as a three-year-old if that makes makes sense. For the longest time I ever wanted to watch the last season because I was so afraid of not liking the gimmick, but they truly did nail it and all five of them constantly worried about hana because they raised her brought them together also. I also love her big sister relationship with Pop because it was so similar to doremi, lol pop was still more mature but hana wasn’t embarrassed easily because she was young minded

This video had me absolutely sobbing by the end. And it marks both your ability to describe and honor each of these characters but also the genuine impact this show has made on those who are lucky enough to even watch a part of the show. I actually got into it after finding an old 4Kids dub dvd. Something about it caught my eye and i fell down the rabbit hole of scouring the internet for at least a few subbed episodes (I managed to find a Spanish dub which i could luckily understand) and it was enough to get me absolutely hooked.

From France here, thanks a lot for this video.
I watched this anime at the french TV for few years during the lunch time (in france we get back home during this time) while I was also in a elementary school (between 7 & 10 yo exactly).
It was just amazing, everything that you said was all the things I felt while watching this anime without being able to describe it all.
Doremi isn't childish, for child yes, but not childish. It is smart, the problems, the sickness, the death (naisho episode make me cry for 2 days), parenthood, siblings, school, everything is here. It helps me a lot in my life and I forgot a bit about it with the year (23 yo now), and you remember me all of that. Why I was loving this anime so much despite the others (dragon ball, card captor Sakura, ...).
This video feel like if I discovered again my child-me. And it felt amazing. I remember the old couch, the opening and ending, the ad in the middle of the episode while I was making my schoolbag for being able to watch the episode until the end, my dessert while watching it, my mom watching each episode with me, every day. God, I miss that. I miss this show. Thank you.

I finally finished Dokkan and watched your video.
    SPOILERS for last episode.
One thing that interesting about the finale, is that Doremi only comes out when Hana put herself in danger by almost revealing she's a witch. Nor steak nor encouragement from friends doesn't work, and it reinforces the most important character trait of Doremi - the ultimate compassion. Even in her weakiest, loneliest, and the most pathethic moment she is still prioritizes others over herself, willing to reach out and help people in need, and this makes her a true magical girl. And another thing that it was only Hana who figures it out, which indicates deeper connection and similarity between mother and daughter that grown over seasons. The series staying true to its magical girl routes thematically while also denying magical aspect of it by making characters lose their powers (which is not new to a genre btw) I find truly fascinating. I'm still wrapping my head around some of its aspects, but I feel like Ojamajo Doremi was able to achieve a lot of things that other series struggling with. But it also really hard recommend it to other people because how much of a commitement and achievement to finish it on its own.
    Also Justice for Pop!

I really liked it, I didn't remember much of what happened in the series just that it made me happy, now I realize how special it was. I'm very late but this series actually has influenced me even more to be able to cherish what I have and it will always have a special place in my heart. These kinds of shows are a bit rare for me to find nowadays because not only do they give light to some problems or issues that a child can have or that it shows how amazing it really is to be when you're surrounded with people who care for you, but it also balances the atmosphere of both its seriousness and its humor, keeping the viewer both entertained yet being able to know them and their experiences.
Another is that all of the supporting characters have a story of their own and the producers made them unique. It's as if that they're dedicating some episodes to let the viewers know more about Doremi and her friends' classmates, families, teachers ans relatives rather than just putting the spotlight on the witch apprentices.
Sometimes when I watch the episodes, it feels like you're witnessing their stories and for some reason you feel emotionally attached to them. (It's probably just me but still) So every time I would watch at least some of the clips from the anime itself, I'll always remember how amazing the producers are to make this a true masterpiece.
    Also just to give my opinion, the dub version of Ojamajo Doremi is so bad it got to the point where I stopped watching it right after I finished the 1st episode, that's all. ;v;

Prepare for a very long comment.
First before anything, I love how your voice started cracking at the very end lol I died laughing.
This video was absolutely incredible. I saw it and just watched the whole thing in one sitting. It breaks my heart how many people have never even HEARD of this anime, or if they have then they either don't like it, don't remember it or only watched the first season on 4Kids. I grew up watching this anime on 4Kids myself, and when I was older I learned that there was more season with subtitles, so I watched it all and OH MY GOSH. I love this series so much it's not even funny. I have a Dreamspinner and a Hadzuki figure XD I'm working to collect the other porons and taps but you know, they're all like a billion dollars so it takes time.
I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE POINT MADE IN THIS VIDEO. I really love all of these characters and they just have so many layers to them that I feel like many people don't realize? Especially if you only saw the 4Kids version. I'm actually a little surprised though that you didn't add Pop into the video too.
PLEASE. PLEASE DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND MAKE MORE OJAMAJO DOREMI VIDEOS. I would love to see a video on the ships in the show, or like a 'top 10 most heartbreaking moments' or even just a video talking about some of the side characters.
Also, I can't BELIEVE you talked about Onpu and barely touched on what happened in the final episode of season 1, I was totally expecting it and it just didn't happen lol I personally feel like that was one of her best videos even though she's...technically barely in it.
Personally my favorite character is probably Momoko or Aiko just for their tragic backstories, but Onpu and Hadzuki are close seconds for me. Don't get me wrong I adore Doremi and Hana as well, but I do prefer the others over them.
This comment is so unnecessarily long lol but I just had to rant. I've never seen a video talking about Ojamajo Doremi so much in my life, it's almost relieving to know that there's still fans of the show out there.
Thank you so much for making such a beautiful video, it was...perfection :)

      Glad you loved it!
I didn't include Pop ultimately because I consider her a supporting character for the whole run of the show, just as much as their classmates or Seki sensei who I think are worth their own segments.
I have at least one more Doremi themed video I'd be interested in making but I much prefer covering different series so it wouldn't be for a while.
Yeah like I said about Onpu, her progression in season 1 could be expounded in more detail but I wanted to keep the video at a good pace. Plus while I do cover a good deal of major spoilers, I didn't want to spoil EVERYTHING if I didn't have to.
And yeah neither had I seen anyone talk about it in this much detail, part of why I wanted to make it. Thanks for stopping by :)

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for covering this show. I have loved this since I was a kid and watched the dub of it, and still love it now. I love Aiko for being a tomboy like me, and Hazuki for loving animals and being a vegetarian like me. I like Momoko for being just as strong and loyal and fascinated by Japanese stuff. I like Onpu for her growth as a person. I like Hana for being goofy and loving. I like Pop for being stubborn and constantly trying to prove how mature and capable she is, even if she falls short. And I like Doremi for always going the extra mile for her friends. Well I think I'm at the point where I am brought to tears by a video. This series is special to me for various reasons and it will never leave my mind. I got into this show when I was young with the 4kids dub which I will say now is in no way as good as the actually Japanese version. But as a child I knew there were series outside the 1st. I even watched it but I was to young to watch anime without it being dubbed and so I never looked back till 2018 when in the summer I thought of rewatching this show from the beginning with the dub then watching the sub and the rest of the show and I fell in love. I will say it is in no way my favorite show but it is one which means more to me than most. I have been rewatching the show for about 2 years straight at this point once with my first watch then rewatching all the character and plot episodes then now this year watching it from beginning to end and once again I love it. From the charming beginnings of 3 witch apprentices passes test and being friends. to the shaking up of Onpu to even the ending. Then falling in love with sharp from the growth of the girls to the enjoyable new characters and there bounds to 46 which is the only one of 2 episodes I have rewatched 6 times in these two years, to the heartbreaking end of sharp, to the entertaining and funny motto which introduced my second favorite character in Momko, to Dokkann which is the season that ended everything well to the point tears wouldn't stop to the ending which I have watched about 6 times at this point and soon to be 7 once I finish Motto again. through all of that I have loved cried and smiled for these girls, their friends be they magical or not, or even their adult figures like teachers mentors, and even parents. This show is a masterpiece of character story and everything else. I only wish it was more popular here in the states. It deserves to be which is why I have said since I finished in 2018 to make It dubbed in English by someone or even port it with sub titles on to stores but nothing seems to work. I just wish with the 2020 movie to be able to finally get this show into the states. However to all of you who have found this video please watch this show. Show the support to this show it needs so Doremi can be loved by so many more kids and adults alike.

I appreciate this video so much you have no idea. When I first watched the last season of the show I couldn’t find it with subs. I was that determined, I was happy to find it with subs later so I could understand the plots

It's clear to me why this show means so much to you. Maybe not completely, I doubt I will ever know 100%, but I feel like I have a good grasp on it. I'm happy you finished the video, and it feels good to hear your passion in the last 15 minutes or so. Excited to see the next one

Thanks, I'm not sure if I'll be able to muster this level again for a while since a show like this only comes a few times in a lifetime. But I'm looking forward to the follow-up too ;)

This is my favorite series ever. It was when I was 8, when I started watch it, and it still is. It's so amazing in every way and I'm happy that somebody is talking about it :) So special.

I think the fact that i spoiled some things from this video only enriched my enjoyment in some ways.

I happened to find your video after watching the trailer for the 2020 Ojamajo DoReMi movie. As many people in here apparently, I'm French (the show was pretty popular in France, we had the whole show dubbed except for Naisho). First of all, I'm glad to see I'm not the only man who watched it, it took me years to admit openly that I watched it as a kid.
When I read (around November 2019) about the upcoming release of a movie for the 20th anniversary, it struck me. All these days when I ate lunch as fast as possible to watch DoReMi in secret in my room, ending just in time to go back to school. These 7 girls I grew up with, everything came back in my memories. And with it, an idea came up : I was determined to find every single episode, and watch everyone of them before the movie was released. At first it was easy, because I found a website that had all the episodes in French. But that was quite the cold shower : I saw how the dubbing was horrible, way too childish, and how they messed up everything about the boys students (they had only one male voice actor for every kid...) in one word : bad. So, after a little digging, I managed to find my Grail : Japanese dubbing, with English subtitles.
It took me about 4 months. Normally it doesn't take me that long to binge a show, I've done it quite a lot and with longer shows. But with DoReMi, I wanted to watch it at my own pace, and also taking about one week break between each season. And honestly, even though I loved DoReMi as a kid, I loved it even more as an adult.
What's weird, is that even though I dislike the French dub, I simply couldn't help myself but to use their French names for the main characters. Of course, when it came to secondary characters, in my mind they still are Seki-sensei, Reika, and Kotake, but with these girls, it's not Doremi, Hazuki, Aiko, Onpu, Momoko, Pop, and Hana. Even after all these years, they'll still be Doremi, Emilie, Sophie, Loulou, Mindy, Bibi, and Flora. Because, deep in my mind, that's their names.
I expected your video to be quite a simple explanation of why DoReMi is a good anime, I surely didn't expect to feel, in 1 hour, what I felt in 214 episodes these last months. Thank you.

Hey there, that's so cool that it was dubbed in French! Would you happen to know where to watch the French version? I'm learning the language :) Merci

@@elcreatesthings Sure. Go to ojamajo.moe, youll find everything. But, know this :
-The whole website is in French, but I'm you'll find your way
-Naisho was never dubbed, there's only a fansub (that you'll find on the site too)
-The dub changed all the names except for Doremi. They kept the family names (Harukaze, Fujiwara, Senoo....), but the first names changed, so be aware of that, same goes for all the witches. There's an English wikia where it gives all the translations,it will help you.
-The show was never released on DVD despite its success in France, so its all captions from the TV broadcasts, and we have one episode still missing, in season 3
-And last, but the most important in my opinion : the studio that dubbed the show wasn't fully strict about accuracy... Sometimes they mix up the transformation catchphrases and the spells, they mix boys names, like Kotake and Masaru, or the S in the SOS trio, and same goes for Oyajiide, who's had two different names in the series : Count Philippe, and Alexandre Jaune d'œuf, Jaune d'œuf being the yellow part in an egg, based on the looks he had...
Sorry if I seem to dislike the French dub, but I do. In Japanese with subtitles I had no problems watching every episode, but in French, I know I couldn't stand one season. Anyway, I hope you'll have a good time watching, and learning French with Ojamajo DoReMi, or in France : Magical DoReMi, or DoReMi Magique some times. As I said, not quite strict...

Back when this video came out, this video gave me the kick in the pants to watch the rest of the anime.
8 months later, I actually did it. And I'm still recovering from those final episodes.
Thanks a bunch Mr. Caribou man.
