Highly recommend Nanlite Pavotubes led lights for cooking shows. The 6s are great for closeups, the 30s great for mounting in the roof. Got magnets you can tape all over , internal batteries, usb c charge, waterproof accessories, mounts, etc.
The bear was nice, but I've never seen adult salmon splashing n a stream and that was so cool - only seen salmon fry released in a stream at a local outdoor classroom.
That 'dream' of Albert Yuen's represented a nightmare to many Islanders who loved the Potholes as an incredible, wild, natural place to enjoy all year round. Large sections of the river would've been off limits to non paying visitors, the planned density of his built out vision, altering the area permanently. When he went belly up for a second time, leaving creditors wondering where $12 million of their dollars went, The Land Conservancy and the Capital Regional District banded together and finally managed to preserve the Potholes for everybody and for all time.
@@therebex23 Coastlines below the mean high tide mark are Crown land, rivers, I'm not so sure what constitutes the border between private and Crown land. In the case of the Potholes access to favourite swimming holes would've required boonie bashing up the other side of the river, or hiking and swimming up the river itself. In any case, I'm profoundly grateful the Potholes are now protected by park status.

In my opinion the shoreline should be pubic access and never private ownership. I was thinking that this resort was destined for failure due to that exact reason. Glad we can preserve the natural gifts this part of the earth has given us through the parks system.
Below mean high tide is federally managed, and there is such a thing as private foreshore leases that extend well out into the ocean. Not just ports etc, but houses with docks fit this category as well, so not all oceanfront is public in Canada. And in BC lakes and rivers can be privately owned in their entirety, and owners can restrict access however they want except for what they call "navigable waters". As in you can't stop people from boating on your part of the lake or rafting down your river (or even putting on waders and fishing in your creek) as long as they don't trespass on your actual dry land.
Ahhhh!!! So thats what it looks like now!!! Learned how to swim in the river below. Right at that spot. The wood was removed due to the building was condemned and potential injuries. I remember climbing around the building when it was still standing. I remember growing up hearing people being injured round there all the time. Spent a many summer days in the 90’s swimming there as it was the only spot for the locals to swim. This was before Sooke had a actual swimming pool. Thank you for showing this. It brought back fond memories. If you follow the trail that leads from there further up called the galloping goose trail as it was called back then. It lead to a ghost town called leech town. I don’t know its open to the public still as there were old buildings there.
I ride by the resort at least once or twice a year while biking. It's changed a lot over the years. The fencing is particularly irksome. The regional park needs to invest some money in making the rockework stable and open it up like it used to be years ago. people used to love wandering around the site. Railings on the rock face stairs would be a good thing.
The bush with the little berries is Catoniaster, a common ornamental. So yes, probably a survivor of resort plantings. Amazing place. Been to Sooke long ago, didn't know about it. I fried bull kelp once but it was much too salty. I bet it would be good pickled.

I remember exploring this just after it was abandoned. There was a huge dance floor (wood) overlooking the river. I remember standing on it and imaging what it would be like if it had been completed. Haha...I remember seeing you buzzing through Sooke on your bike.
Man… Sooke potholes are one of my favourite places on the island, close enough to Victoria but wild enough to enjoy spectacular scenery and spot wildlife all year round. Watching this video from 2 years ago also reminds me how far you’ve gone in your story telling and film making craft since then. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but your recent videos from Alaska and Haida Gwaii are just on another level. Great work! ❤
I like how when he pulls up you can see the big stone chimney in the background behind the fence and the fence has "KEEP OUT" signs posted every 5 ft and then all of a sudden we see Dustin at the ruins behind the fence lol. You certainly didn't break any rules there lol.

Haven't seen the place since the 90 s probably the coolest building site I've seen recognized the fire place instantly .the wood beams and stone work were amazing glad I saw it the way it was to bad about the spray paint in Europe you wouldn't spray paint a castle .I'm a Mason by trade so I guess it made an impression on me thankful the video

My wife is a student at Western (WWU) in Bellingham working on her marine biology & biology majors w/ geography & cartography minors. We are entrepreneurs, "lazy preppers" & overland aficionados lol. (You should see my Barnävit Designs SVT Raptor!) But yeah, she's WAY cooler than me: I'm just a mechanic obsessed with physics & history with a bad habit of volunteering, lol. We could use some cool recipes that use our local NW flora & fauna on our forest-service road x-country adventures!

The bottom floor was pretty creepy back when the wood was still there. I can remember comparing it to Dracula's castle but the main floor with that huge fireplace was so cool .
Love the vids and that bike conversion. I will have to look up how you did that. A couple things with ur pickle, if your jars cool down b4 you can seal them properly put all the closed jars upside down in the boiling water for a minute no more then pull them out and turn ride side, tighten some more. You want the air to contract so a vacuum is created and the lid pops in. Then you can store w/o refrigeration.
I've also read a few articles that mention it being built in the 80's, but as a young kid hiking with my mom in the late 70's I recall it being built. I remember all the construction equipment in ok condition abandoned with the windows smashed in. It's too bad they didn't get the entire roof on; they were so close too. That would have added many years to the structure and perhaps more investment to completion. The rockwork still blows me away to this day
When I lived in the area the wood log structure was still up. It looked a lot more impressive back then. The dirt bags can't wait to spray paint everything.

I was there 30 years ago and haven't been back since. The timbers were still in place and nothing had been defaced and ruined by vandals. It's disgusting and sickening to see all that horrible spray can graffiti all over the place. None of that was around when I first visited. I think spray cans should be banned.

The architecture is cool. Almost looks like a dream level for Tony hawk if you added ramps. Really like that fireplace. I do like to see updates on the older video sites. I was sad to see the island burned. Figured not to many people have the nuts the use the wire to cross. Beary happy to see a friend enjoying the stream.

Last time I was up there the wood framing and roof where still intact, and there was a suspended steel beam assembly that extended out over the cliff that was perfect spot for a scary lunch break.
We always called the kelp sea onions haha we don’t eat them but we do stomp on them and whip them around with their heads off so they make fun sounds Very cool video from the ruins to the MoHo cooking show. Also I’m not against tasteful graffiti but it is sad to see ruins like that littered with it - especially when the stonework itself was so beautiful!

A certain canvas and a certain artist will create a beautiful piece of art, and this location has many. I would actually be so happy to see this location utilized as an art venue. It’s the pointless spray can vandals that drive me crazy.
Since my home has been Victoria for my entire life I was able to see the resort (that's what it was suppose to be had it been finished) before it was torn down for safety reasons. It was a very large log and heavy timber building that was pretty much just a shell. Best part was the massive fire place that was most likely in a grand room.
In early 80's we would hike up there the roof was still on it.there was some heavy equipment still there. Used to light a fire in the fireplace down stairs. I never trusted the walk out on the cliff. I think it was built in the early 70's then the guy ran out of money. Now there's a road up to it.
I just recently went here last weekend as well as to one of the old military bunkers on the South Island. I was blown away how close this was to the road. I initially drove right past it and didn’t realize until I drove back out of the park. I didn’t stop to make a video but I will next time.

I grew up in sooke, you should have seen it with all the timber frame still standing. It was and still is the place to go swimming in the summer.

Also I’m not against tasteful graffiti but it is sad to see ruins like that littered with it - especially when the stonework itself was so beautiful!
Very well written comment, thank you. These ruins are so nice, it is a shame to see the graffiti. I completely agree with you tho, about the art. A certain canvas and a certain artist will create a beautiful piece of art, and this location has many. I would actually be so happy to see this location utilized as an art venue. It’s the pointless spray can vandals that drive me crazy.

Since my home has been Victoria for my entire life I was able to see the resort (that's what it was suppose to be had it been finished) before it was torn down for safety reasons. It was a very large log and heavy timber building that was pretty much just a shell. Best part was the massive fire place that was most likely in a grand room.
In early 80's we would hike up there the roof was still on it.there was some heavy equipment still there. Used to light a fire in the fireplace down stairs. I never trusted the walk out on the cliff. I think it was built in the early 70's then the guy ran out of money. Now there's a road up to it.

I just recently went here last weekend as well as to one of the old military bunkers on the South Island. I was blown away how close this was to the road. I initially drove right past it and didn’t realize until I drove back out of the park.
I didn’t stop to make a video but I will next time.
First time I was here I had a hard time finding it as well. Hiding in plain sight.
