I agree that iPad is more of a companion device not a replacement. I agree paying 1500 dollars for iPad Pro is stupid. But I think Austin is in a tech bubble of what iPad use case really is. Being able to edit, write, take notes, and draw with the iPad is still the best and necessary for some people’s work. Until apple makes a 2 in 1 touchscreen computer (which they probably won’t), ipad is still vital. iPad is still the best companion device
They won't - Apple hates the compromises that'd be necessary to make a 2-in-1. Think about all the boneheaded UI changes Microsoft keeps making to Windows; they do that because they need to make Windows easier to use for touchscreens, and oftentimes UX design choices for touchscreens are at odds with UX design choices for mice.
I personally love that the iPad is not quite a two in one. I love just detaching the screen from the keyboard when it gets in the way of reading or drawing. I had a two-in-one and it worked really well but the ability to detach it entirely prevents me from going back.
I agree. I watched so many iPad reviews where the reviewer for some reason feels the need to focus on the fact it doesn’t have pro editing software. I mean yeah, it also probably doesn’t have pro CAD or architectural software.
The Mini is definitely a good companion device. It's perfect for the typical personal area network. It's not trying to be anything it isn't. More of this form factor, please. And yes, spring for cellular. Absolutely.
Hope the Mini gets atleast 90 Hz or 120 and more brightness, that's the only thing I don't like about the Mini, everything else is solid about it. Brightness matters more to me since this is a very mobile tablet that you expect to use outside, 500-600 Nits isn't enough.
@@Nova2127UYep. I'd pay a good premium for OLED nits and a high refresh. It's up to Apple to keep me from investing in an eventual small premium tablet from Samsung (if they ever make one)
My Mini 6 is perfect since I use it to read books. I don't notice any Jelly scrolling, even when I basically use Mini in portrait mode, 90% of the time, even when video showing it. Unless they give Mini an OLED screen, I won't be changing it. I bought Mini 6 as cellular, and 256GB. Higher refresh rate will be nice but I honestly will prefer OLED compared to that.
I have used the iPad Pro as my main computer for 5 years and I haven’t run into a website that doesn’t work on it for at least 6 or 7 years. I sold my Mac 5 years ago because I prefer the iPad for music production. I started using GarageBand and some features have limitations compared to other programs on the Mac however the tradeoff is worth it for touch and the portability.
Mate, I don’t know why you even bother trying to justify your thoughts by giving useful real-world experiences from your *actual personal experience* (not just theoretical examples).. Austin is one of the people who believes his opinion is the dominant opinion. Of course, it’s good to be confident in your own opinion, but I just wholeheartedly disagree that the iPad is in a dead spot. The wheels are in motion with the M1+2 processors, important to note that these are they same silicon as used in their other machines. More and more pppl are attempting to use them as computer replacement and the changes in the iPadOS are symptomatic of this. I would also disagree that they have marketed it as a desktop replacement/computer replacement. They are jus two ridiculously wealthy.. that they can be theoretical in their marketing approach, letting ppl play along, whilst remaining in main control of the direction. It’s a theoretical rhetoric, the complete opposite of the MAC VS PC ad campaign they used those years ago. So I completely disagree with Austin’s point about that. Entirely.
Not much else needs to b said than you did there, iPad never been even marketed as laptop replacement, pro versions a more extension that work well between Mac and iPhone. Their stream they did could been done through an iPad as well edited and be just as good but faster if one use 2 devices of course. Never have browser issues on phone or iPad myself. Well a new channel for me and was nothing enlightening at all, though I agree pricing is on a hard place on some models. Like it’s said here it’s a laptop replacement which it never been or stated, but even if it’s not, quite many do manage work with it for work. Longer than expected but well you said most anyways. ☺️👍
Ok this subject I have to comment on. I’ve been working in tech support for years and have worked with so many older people. They think iPads are a laptop replacement. Like Austin said it isn’t. So Austin is right. People think iPads are replacements for laptops and when they go to certain sites they run into issues. Nothing to do with being a tech enthusiast. I feel like it’s quite the opposite. People who are trying to make things convenient and easy by just using an iPad are the ones who suffer because they don’t realize it just doesn’t cut it and just is not a true replacement for the laptop.
It can be though. I have a professional work flow and it works. Safari does force websites into a desktop version in the app settings. The thing is that it isn’t a replacement for everyone but CAN be a replacement for the people that want it or can have it be one.
i just traded my M2 12.9 iPad Pro to someone who was selling their MacBook Air M2 and i have no regrets, the iPad was great and fun at times but only when i would randomly remember i had it and bring it out from under my bed were it was just collecting dust… I do alot of video editing and photo editing and i got really happy when they finally brought out davinci to the iPad but it had a lot of flaws starting off with it not working most of the time and crashing and losing my videos (i even went to settings to change my ram usage and set it to max but it didn’t help) but with this MacBook which is the same processor on the ipad its just completely different, i could actually edit videos and use crazy nodes and color grades and still export in less than 20 seconds! (my videos are usually less than 10 second reels) but all that said… do your research before buying something and make sure you need that product because theyre hella pricey
From the perspective of a student, an Ipad is great as a primary device. Since most of what you do is in a browser and the respective apps, (which works fine, quite nice not to be only in a browser tbh) while having super low friction in terms of being able to both write and type notes, annotate as well as write essays is great. At the end of the day, though, it’s just super easy and more importantly fun to use, with the versatility calling back to the low friction and fun to use aspect. As an all in one device that matches with your iphone well, honestly i’ve not seen an issue really yet 🤷♂️
I definitely can’t use an iPad as my primary device, but I love both my 12.9” Pro and Mini. Great companion devices, love using them for sidecar, or controlling them with my MacBook. I feel like my toolkit would be incomplete without them. I haven’t had any issue with not having cellular on them - It’s pretty seamless to connect to the hotspot on my phone, which is nice
Mine is great for light computing tasks when I'm on the go or in another part of my house other than my office, where I use a Mac Mini. It's my bedroom tv, my preferred reading device, and truly excels at things like browsing and media consumption. I agree that it's a great companion device. I don't try to fully replace my Mac with it, but it slots in nicely between my iPhone and my Mac.
I haven’t owned a laptop or pc since 2017 and have only used iPads as my computer, outside of work which requires I use a laptop, in that time frame. The iPad can work as a perfectly fine computer replacement, it just doesn’t work for people in the tech space who do a lot more with their computers than normal people. My iPad has Microsoft Office, can download movies, browse the internet, and works with filing taxes. That is all I need it for. Edit: I primarily used an iPad Pro 10.5 from 2017 until a month ago when I updated to the most recent (as of September, 2023) IPad Air. I updated it solely because it was on sale and had the M1 in it.
It can be a laptop replacement, but a iPad Pro just does it worse for more money. I paid 600$ for a iPad Air with a 100$ apple pen and 200$ keyboard case so I spent 900$ for a worse version of a MacBook, the MacBook Air is only 750$ on Amazon and a base iPad Pro is 800$
@@johnpoe3012 I think a big difference is you are comparing what you spent buying expensive accessories versus someone casually entering the market. In 2017 the iPad Pro 10.5 was $650 and the MacBook Air was $999, I didn’t need an Apple Pen and bought a keyboard case of Amazon for like $50 so it was around $700. The iPad Air I bought in September 2023 was $500 and again the case was about $50, that still ends up giving me everything I need a few hundred $s below the MacBook Air. I do agree if someone is willing to or needs the extra features it is worth it to get a MacBook, my point was more that an iPad works fine, isn’t price prohibitive, and they last a long time.
@@supme7558 I wasn’t saying the iPad does anything an iPhone doesn’t do, but it does everything I need a pc to do. The biggest difference between it and my iPhone is the size and the convenience that adds when using things like Microsoft Office. It does allow me to use apps split screen, which the iPhone doesn’t. I also used to have a keyboard case with my old iPad and having that case made typing with it and carrying the keyboard convenient.
I’ve been using iPad since 2015 when iOS 9 released. Still to this day, on an iPad PRO 11 inch 4th gen with iPad OS 17 I have never came across a website that didn’t work the same way it does on a Laptop. Got through both school and work with iPad OS. I’m not sure how it doesn’t serve as a laptop replacement.
Using an ipad (or any tablet device) for work is really a case by case basis. My current job works out of Microsoft Office suite so honestly my work issued laptop could not be replaced by an ipad nor is most of my work compatible with ipad if I work from home. But we have designers in the design department who’s workflow is ipad heavy. And the most they need from the microsoft suite on a daily basis is their outlook email and teams, which they can add as apps. There really is no universal answer. Some people can work and just own a tablet/ipad without hiccups. Heck, my ‘personal’ laptop is currently a chromebook and for my independent creative (non office work) and at home needs it covers me just fine. A year ago my life and job was very different and I needed a full on laptop.
I like that the iPad is modular and when you don't need or want a keyboard you can carry it around to play games, read, post on social and use a web browser. I have not run into any issues with the browser or browsers on the iPad and websites. You have to understand what you want to do and buy the correct device. iPads are great for most tasks even video and photo editing and have great accessories and modularity. A great replacement for most people.
As someone who has been using an ipad as my primary traveling device for 2 years, I'm perplexed on what websites aren't working for them. I think there have been 2 or 3 times I've had to go to the options and choose "request Desktop website" and that solved my problems. But the device does so many things, and the form factor is just easier to carry around than even the thinnest of comparably powerful laptops. And I can choose whether or not I want to include the keyboard in the footprint. I couldnt disagree with their takes here more.
@@BubbaOfTheZew I don’t understand either. I completed my FASFA on my iPad and applied for a government position on my iPad with no issues at all. Same thing with filing taxes.
I love the Mini - I have a little mount for it and it's just underneath my main monitor so I can watch RUclips and control my lights and use it as a display monitor for my camera. I have considered getting a larger one, but the mini is just perfect.
Honestly I’ve been struggling so much to decide which iPad to buy for weeks. I was leaning towards an iPad Mini already, and this just confirmed what I wanted. Thanks guys!
I wanted an iPad mini but the store near me didn’t have one so I bought a nice gin Wi-Fi version for like 330 bucks and I am in love with it! But the mini looks adorable.
Mini is cool, just wouldn’t have a use for it if I’m rocking pro max 🤷♂️. Fully satisfied with my 10th generation with 5G on it. I’ll take it wherever for streaming sports on the go. If I wanna produce some tracks or game a bit that laptop is ready and waiting.
Exactly i wanted to replace my Dell laptop with an tablet but All of the apps that i use daily are just more optimiesed on Windows or Mac os like word, Power point i just hate those apps like keynote or notes. Maybe it has better performance but i face All of the problems.
I know it's somewhat niche but the release of Logic Pro for iPad was what sold me on an 11' Pro, having a portable musical "sketchbook" of sorts is an absolute game changer
$600 Flex 5 will do the same stuff a lot better. And when you're done with that, you can do some light gaming or edit some video. Tablets are literally a pointless market segment. Some legit use for business and commerce but most people are just sacrificing a bunch of features either to have something a little thinner or, more probably, people buy an iPad to look cool and just settle because a tablet from Apple costs what a laptop does from any other manufacturer. It is the Apple device they can afford and they buy that instead of buying the device they actually need. Then they go on YT and sing its praises because they're just desperate to validate their objectively poor buying decision.
@@SomeOldGamers A $600 Flex 5 will NOT handle a DAW better than an (admittedly more expensive at $800) M2 iPad Pro by any measure. Also, that's why I said it is a niche product, I already have both a custom built desktop and a Macbook, I did not "settle" for an iPad, I got it to make music on the go and to use it as a portable second monitor (among a few other things). There's a whole lot of assuming in your comment.
I fully agree with this take and advice. I would also implore Apple to clarify when each iPad was introduced, and I should be able to obtain this information without having to enter a tiny-printed model number into a web browser.
The main magic off the iPad is when it’s used naked - no keyboard, pencil or for that matter a case! It’s just an amazing display that’s light and direct. Apple never intended the iPad to replace a mac , it’s a quality of life improvement in certain categories. I love using my iPad 11 inch - it’s the ideal weight, the multitasking is on point and it’s fast. Love reading, watching content and occasionally drawing and note taking on it. I was excited when they introduced the Magic Keyboard but soon realised that it’s stripes away the main essence of the iPad. Honestly I feel the only iPad that should be allowed to have a keyboard is the largest model. The 11 inch is just perfect! Is synonyms to burger melting in your mouth expect here it’s the iPad in your hands Its fundamentals sound and as years go by can morph into anything your life needs - for being a notebook/sketch book, amazing media player, best possible mobile gaming machine to best kindle there can be, best place to browse your photo albums and music. It’s just an amazing screen- first appreciate that. It’s a quality of life improvement and now a days it’s worth the cost since so much of our lives are digital. Your wrist, your eyes and your back perhaps will appreciate it. Next, it’s extremely compatible with your Mac. This is new and is still work in progress. There is a certain movement in freestyle creative apps are are starting to rise- a scrap book kind of aesthetic- that’s iPads forte and post processing can then be done on the Mac. I’ve also noticed that each size of iPad has a certain implicit multitasking gestures that are suited best for each respectively while still being available in all. I think somebody need to dwell into that more. The 12.9 is not the best iPad anymore in my opinion it’s the 11 inch pro - extreme light, fast and nimble
I spent the extra money and got a MacBook Didn’t want to use a iPad like a laptop I wanted a laptop lmao But it’s a trend I’ve noticed at college most students use a iPad like a laptop
Sounds about right. I think tablets are the left handed screwdrivers of the computing world. About as useful as tits on a bull. I have a phone in my pocket that can do everything a tablet can do. Not going to do laptop things on a tablet. They are just upcycling them and selling them for pretty much for what a real laptop would cost if they weren't Apple sluts. Just all part of Apple's strategy to give you less for more.
I agree that iPads and tablets in general are rather the companion pieces instead of the main devices. I use mine to watch YT and Netflix, take work meetings (the camera is much better than on my work laptop), read books and comics, draw, make notes, and browse the web. I actually loved my iPad mini 4 to DEATH (just as I loved my iPad mini 2, but I killed its screen by removing its old case and not having the new one ready the same day) - and I would still continue to use my Mini 4 if it wasn't for its poor battery life after a long time of daily use. And I was going to actually buy the iPad mini 6 after the refresh when I discovered that the version I actually wanted (256 GB, 5G - I always get the cellular version) - actually has the price of a base model MB Air M1 in my country, especially with the purchase of an additional pencil and a new case - BTW, it used to be a LOT CHEAPER for the older versions to get a reasonable mini model. I decided against the mini 6 and I actually switched to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 - and I LOVE IT! The included s-pen, the multitasking, the bigger (but not too big) screen - and even with a case it was cheaper than the iPad mini 6 I was eyeing to buy! I definitely agree that people at Apple should actually consider making the iPad line a lot simpler. And I believe all models should have a ready cellular connection in the base version, with a bigger difference in price between the models. In my opinion, it would be logical to maybe have them in mini + Air + Pro versions - and that's it. The current lineup is too convoluted, pricey, and usually just doesn't make sense.
For me, my iPad Pro suits my use cases very well. As a student, I find myself using the Apple Pencil alot. That’s my use for it, Apple pencil, g docs suite and microsoft’s suite, plus entertainment on the side. I don’t edit videos on the go (and actually I don’t like editing videos anywhere but my home) but when I do need to edit videos I have my windows pc for that. However, I do agree that the iPad does need some sort of a more desktop mode that you can switch to anytime like Samsung’s Dex. That’s for a very specific set of power users, but if Apple wants the iPad Pros to be a laptop replacement then it needs a feature like that. Not everyone will use it but its good to have that feature available for when you need it.
I use an m1 iPad Air and as a tool alongside my Mac it is great never thought if it replacing my Mac but also with my logic tech keyboard case I can often take it on the go over my computer and be successful with it
I'm in a similar boat. Powerful desktop, strong laptop, and an M1 iPad Air. I have the same Logitech case and find that really useful when I'm taking notes and need to get something down quick. My laptop is mostly around for all the Windows applications I need on the go. If I wasn't an EE major, I could see myself ditching the laptop with relative ease. There are days when I hesitate to bring my laptop.
I use my 15 inch MacBook for editing music videos , producing on MPC software and FL studio , etc . I use my 12.9 ipad m1 for web surfing , causal gaming sometimes editing .
As a pilot, I need my ipad mini because of the form factor. Cockpits are small and the small Ipad is perfect for the lack of real-estate that's available. Personal preference though. (Love the videos btw!)
I edit all my videos on iPads still. The Apple Pencil and lumafusion/Davinci works perfectly. I only need my actual MacBook is for external SSD storage management and using RUclips studio. What’s great about the iPad is that I can throw it in my work bag and easily edit in short moments I have free time. The iPad is a lot more durable than my M1 MacBook. Still, I get what yall are saying… but I’d love for the iPad to evolve further.
I still use my iPad Pro 11" for texting with a physical keyboard since I don't have a MacBook, split-screen multitasking, cropping photos (it's sometimes better than cropping photos on the iPhone), Google Sheets & Keep notes or Google Docs, Canva occasionally, web browsing, & watching videos or shows. I also use it to design car sketches for headlights, taillights, or grill design ideas
I will be that guy and say that iPads are great for creativity! It is so powerful and I use it as much as my computer. However it does have issues such as Apple Pencil glitching out randomly or laggy as hell when I charge it but I still enjoy it! I use my pc and Steamdeck for gaming and my iPad for everything else. And I mean everything.
I have my phone and iPad that are used all the time and I have a PC that hasn’t been turned on in over a year. That tells me all I need to know about whether or not they work as a replacement for me, and I’m using old devices. I’m on an iPhone 8 Plus and a 7th gen iPad. I do have a 2020 SE that I carry from time to time. I have put new batteries in everything except the 8 Plus. It’s at 84% health and still doing good.
Writing, art (obviously) photography with lightroom, 3d modeling (both organic sculpting with texturing and CAD, animation. At this point I more often wish that my macbook pro had a touchscreen more than I wish my ipad ran mac apps. That has only recently shifted with the 12” ipad m2 pro. I haven’t touched the mac in months
For me, the problem with pad computers in 2023 is the same problem they've always had: terrible ergonomics. They function fine, but their in-between size combines the worst of a laptop and desktop, not the best of them.
When it comes to iPad I've only used the 12'' 3rd gen Pro version with the magnetic Apple Pencil. It holds up pretty well and I hardly use it as a companion device. In my use case I used it as a photo editing device(photoshop, Affinity Photo, Lightroom, Linearity Curve) and I used it as a (4K) video editing device with a mouse and with drawing I used the pencil. Apart from the horrible Apple files-app integration it performed pretty well. As a leisure device I use a Samsung tab A device and I've recently gotten an Oneplus Pad with keyboard. I'm not planning to use it as a full blown drawing device but with this device, I see more of a companion-like experience. I can edit 4K with proxy but I wanted to use it purely for small projects and as a travel size device to do some editing on the go. I also find the filesystem on Android devices easier to handle at times.
@@TEAML3ZAR right I’m sure it depends on the specific app or maybe even iPad model, but I know that with my pro I can download web extensions, and I’ve downloaded things from the web. Again though I’m sure your mileage may vary.
Nope, I've never done it either. I've never understood why people do that, even before Bendgate. Same reason why I've never understood why people put their wallets in their back pockets.
@@SgtReaper22 Women’s pockets are very shallow and men’s pockets are very deep. Idk why, misogyny maybe lol Also, smartphones have gotten bigger since 2014 that’s why they look so big in women’s back pockets, also, most women I’ve seen in my country have iPhone 11 or iPhone 13 and such rarely a pro max model, I’ve only seen one girl with an iPhone 12 Pro Max lol all others have standard models, probably because the iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t fit at all lol
Just FYI you can resize apps on iPad now that they’ve added stage manager, although I still think they should make something like Samsung Dexter for when you connect it to a monitor
I do everything on my desktop but when I'm away I always use my iPad. I use it more than my phone. Never had problems with websites, great for RUclips, Twitch and browse social media. My last laptop was from 2015, a desktop and an iPad is good for me.
The problem with ipads is they are uncomfortable to use unless your like a little kid or something. You need two hands to hold them, they dont stand up on their own, do not feel solid when you do stand them up and something you would just put down and forget about. I would rather use a VR system for $300 and that makes me vomit after an hour of use.
I actually have a laptop for funzies lolol. Just feels weird AF when I had an ipad before and the screen is glass. my phone dont like for that. The only app I use is pandora music. could care less about handhelds if its not texts or calls. I want something like a smart watch but they are kinda easy to break prob idk I ride dirt bikes and oil and greese is my thing. kinda waiting for some new technology but is there anything killing it? electic bike department? If I rode bikes in my city more. I like doing skateboard tricks tho smh :/@@edd9581
The M silicon laptops are too good at the $1000 price range, while the iPads are only good enough at that same price. I’d be stupid to get the iPad over the MacBook for productivity workflows, content consumption and communication sure, but it just can’t compare as a primary work device.
I found a brand-new iPad mini for dirt cheap a few weeks back and I'm honestly really loving the form factor. I mainly use Samsung devices, so it's been interesting learning about iPad OS fatures and functionality after not using an iOS device since the 2nd Gen iPod Touch back in the day. If anything, it really makes me with there was a good Android tablet in this form factor that didn't skimp out on performance. Closest thing would be the Legion y700 and even that is quite a bit larger due to the aspect ratio. There are also the folding phones but the price + potential durability issues are big concerns.
I love my 14” MacBook… I love the companion iPad mini 5 that I use as a tablet only. iPads are great as tablets but I could never use an iPad properly as a laptop replacement in the current state of iPad OS
I just watched this with my 11” M1 iPad and couldn’t agree more. Casually using it as laptop replacement for light work but need more apps compatibility and also better multitasking
I use my ipad pro maily for creative work like writing music, or Illistrations, and some photo editing. In my opinion if your work flow doesnt need a Stylus of mac book air.
When you said “You’re probably watching this on your iPad in multitask mode with 3 windows…” Well, this was in Picture-in-picture while I was scrolling facebook 😂
I daily an M1 MacBook Air and 9th Gen, both base models, and they work incredibly well for I need to do with them. I think there should a base iPad with 2nd Apple Pencil support, headphone jack, maybe a home button for people like me who likes physical buttons, at around the $300-$350 range. $400+ for the base model is approaching Air territory. And the M1 and M2 iPads actually need to take advantage of those chips. They are more than capable of doing MacBook things, yet Apple is gatekeeping certain features to not cannibalize sales. Even the Apple Pencil line is confusing if you are not remotely techy. Keep the 2nd gen pencil, get rid of the base iPads and start fresh at cheaper prices, and actually make the pro iPads worth buying. My family has an iPad Pro from a few years ago and other than Stage Manager and 2nd gen pencil support, there is almost no difference software-wise between the actual base model iPad and the iPad Pro. I argue for actual "pros", get a MacBook if you want an Apple computer. You can either buy an iPad Pro M2 with a keyboard and 2nd gen pencil or a base MacBook Air M1 for the same price, and I know for a fact the MacBook does more. For around the same price.
I use my pro for research, notes (typed and written), content consumption, and travel media management. I can quickly edit/scrub/delete photos and videos from external drives. I rarely feel the need to travel with my laptop for general use.
I have an iPad 9 but I still use it as companion to my laptop. Since there’s a lot of stuff, my iPad does good but if I want to play any game I reach for my computer computer.
If Apple computers can run steam, even if they’re not gaming computers, the iPad Pro, the iPad Air should be able to run steam and be able to play some of those games on there
I agree with you. I have an ipad mini i use watch movies and for my notes i need for work. I use microsoft notes, so i go back to my pc. i have my notes on Windows pc. I agree with your point.
For me, the pro 12.9 with the Magic Keyboard is the perfect thin client to remote into beefier machines for coding and suited well for play at night when work is over. On the other hand, the iPad ninth GEN entry level is perfect for my wife who is a homeschooler and has light computing needs. For both these use cases, the iPads are superb!
I personally have both. I have an 11 inch iPad Pro and an M1 MacBook Pro. Yeah that's a whole lot of money there, but for what I need them, which is school, it's basically required. I can have a dual monitor setup if needed and if not I can easily pick up where I left off on the other device. I also decided to get the Pro versions of both because I previously had a Windows Surface Book and at times it would lag, so I was tired of that and yeah not everybody would need or use all the capabilities of the Pro versions, but some would. I believe getting either one is great and they can be used perfectly fine by themselves but the experience is enriched if you have both, at least for those that can afford it.
My number one complaint with the ipad eco system is the pointless complexity with pen support and app support it's always felt very akin to the 3DS and *New* 3DS where because they put a bit more of a stronger chip in the newer ones suddenly you're locked out of being able to use an app AT ALL on the regular ones. I had a mini 3rd gen, back in 2014 which is what got me hooked on ipads and my current one is the latest mini which I got day 1. It is absolutely a companion device. I'll use it for media consumption, starting artwork while on the go and then have my Zephyrus laptop for when I need proper PC programs and Word to type up documents, and then at home the gaming PC for the heavy stuff. More advanced drawing applications, 3D modeling, and Unreal Engine.
I Have an M2 iPad Pro. I have to say it is my daily Driver. I am able to everything I need to do in daily life on the device. My secondary Device is my iPhone 13 Pro. I use as my on the go Device. Together I am able to accomplish all I need to do. I can understand not everyone can do this. As content Creators may need may need more Apps or Software. Students May need Something not comparable with the iPad. Everyone may have their own reasons for not being able to go iPad only. For Average People to do Basic Tasks. To do Basic Work Flow. Get everyday things accomplished this can be all done with just an iPad. Even if you need to go beyond and need to do the average school work tasks. You should be able to get average tasks done on an iPad. Access to Apple Works Apps, Notes, Online, and other Apps from the App Store should get you by. I am not an expert but I do Spreadsheet sheets. I do Presentations. As Well as Writing Documents. So I get by with the iPad and I think the avg. person can so not everyone is looking to be a content creator and looking for all the content creation tools.
Back when the iPad was first introduced, its purpose was relatively simple and clear considering that phones were so small and not very powerful, and laptops were very bulky and power hungry. But today, phones have become bigger and more powerful to where it can do nearly all of the tasks of a tablet decently and even more. Meanwhile, laptops have gotten thinner, lighter, and more power efficient, especially with MacBooks and Apple Silicon. This left the iPad with not much of niche left to fulfill, with the exception of note taking and digital art; and even then, some would say there are cheaper, better ways to do the same job as an iPad. As of right now, I personally believe that most people don’t need an iPad. Only people who know that need one for a very specific purpose like art should buy one. Steve Job’s vision for an iPad, and tablets in general, being the mainstream computing device for most people failed to become reality, and I think we should all accept that. I mean, it seems like Apple has accepted it considering they haven’t even bothered to improve the iPad at all in 2023 outside of some new software features which don’t really do much anyway.
👍 For my business the iPad mini is great‼️Trying to write emails on my iPhone 15 pro max is a PITA, and carrying around my 16 inch MBP all the time isn’t feasible, practical, or necessary. Furthermore the larger iPads defeat the purpose of portability and ease of use. The iPad mini with a keyboard is perfect for knocking out some invoices, emails, or general customer correspondence. It’s not suppose to be a replacement however it is the perfect companion 💯.
The iPad line needs to be simplified, no question. But as far as day-to-day use, I am something of an iPad power user and outside of certain niche tasks (I work in Unreal Engine, for instance), you can do most things on an iPad that you can do on a computer with relative ease - but it requires you to adjust your approach to how to use a computer.
Totally agreed, have same exprience. Most things for most people can be done on an iPad. Still I could live with no iPad, but I could not live without MacBook or my phone. The iPads for most are just non-essential companion devices, that make your life more easy, enjoyable, but cannot replace Laptops yet.
Glad you mentioned Chrome tablets at the end of the video. That Duet 5 is my dream machine to do work and leisure with. Just need to get money for it so I can replace my Intel Atom CPU based Windows 10 tablet with it😢
I am still using the original Chromebook Duet. The duet 5 looks so nice. I also just need the money for it

I have an Air, and I like it for reading, note taking, watching and listening to content. That being said I feel uncomfortable doing productivity things on it except for occasional and quick tasks. I think there’s space for it beside a laptop, that being said I don’t justify paying pro level pricing for it.
You know iPad can also just be tablet. It’s just a huge plus you can add a mouse and keyboard and do good laptop tasks with. It’s wonderful. I don’t think the line is confusing. I think the Microsoft Surface tablets are better for power users.
I bought the 5g mini one recently for work. I use mapping software and it's the fastest cheapest tablet with 5g and a good size. the only other tablet they give us for work is still on 4g and just sucks big time for everything from navigation on home screen to laggy websites. Think thats a samsung tab 7 lite
I’m a business owner and I’d mostly use it for organizing, watching content, and maybe editing some photos. it could never replace my MacBook. I love using a real computer from most things. I wouldn’t want to edit video on the tablet.
It depends on the usage for the iPad in my case is my main device for media and browsing. My daughter uses her iPad for drawing due the Apple pencil. For replacing a Laptop I agree with Austin is not a full replacement.
The problem with removing models is it also disrupts the ladder that Apple built. $330 gets you the base iPad with the old design. The new design is $450, and the mini is $500, The Air is $600, and the Pro is $800 and $1100. If the 9th gen works, great, only $330. But if you want the newer design and slightly better processor, that's $450. If you need a better processor still, the mini is only $500, you just have to deal with the smaller screen. Want the Apple Pencil? Well the 10th gen only works with the USB C or the 1st gen, no magnetic charging, the USB C will stick to the 10th gen, but not charge, and it doesn't have pressure sensitivity, the 1st gen does, but doesn't stick to the iPad and still uses Lightning. Better Apple Pencil requires the iPad mini or iPad Air. Want more than 64GB? 256GB 10th gen is the same price as the iPad air, so you might as well get the better processor as well and support for the 2nd gen Apple Pencil. $750 for the iPad Air with 256GB, $50 more gets you the Pro Motion display, M2, FaceID, improved cameras, and Thunderbolt, just so long as you put up with 128GB of storage instead. With as many models as there are right now, it's so easy for someone to just step up a tiny bit to the next model. I think it's difficult to really place things as well. Would the mini stay where it's at as the SE? $500? Or would that step down to $400 and the iPad Air would become the regular iPad at $600?
the only reason i use an ipad is for comics and graphic novels, there’s an app where you can upload your comics and read them with max resolution, yes i have tried apps on android tablets none of them look good but for some reason the same file looks better on an ipad 🤷♂️
Ipad 9th gen should be discontinued and drop iPad 10th gen to tbe iPad 9th price. Mini should just exclude a lot of feature and just make it cheaper than iPad 10th Gen. Mini, normal, air, pro. Idk why Mini is more expensive than the basic one
Ipads were cool when they were just ipod touches with more screen real estate. At a certain point, a desktop or laptop will always be a more favorable work station.
I'll just stick to my Nokia Android tablet till I need an upgrade, and then I will more than likely get a cheap Walmart ONN Android tablet as they do just about everything I need without the price of an iPad, and they work great with a bluetooth mouse, and keyboard combo when I need it to make a sudo laptop replacement on the cheap. Also far as not having cellular data on a tablet that's not a huge problem as so many places have free WiFi these days as long as you are careful about not doing sensitive work on it, or just use your phone.
I mean I have been able to get my M2 iPad Pro 11-inch with 16gb RAM on my phone plan. Affordable payment plan and 5G? Yes please. Now yes I do need some work around a for professional work flow on my iPad. But everything else that can do what my Laptop can on the IPad. It’s by far a phenomenally better experience on my iPad than my laptop. Everything is more convenient, fluid and just feels great in the palm of your hands as if you’re holding the app or window itself (which you are.) the 5G is really unbeatable if you compare it to the MAC as well. I can comfortably take it anywhere without taking a lot of space or relying on a hotspot or crappy public Wi-Fi. But it all depends on your workflow and if you can handle the work arounds. If you can snag one on your phone plan. You absolutely should. Even if you’re using it as a companion device. The versatility is what makes the IPad awesome.
I've wanted an iPad mini for years now. I've also been broke for years now.
The Pros need to have some sort of “Dex” mode to give you a MacOS type experience. They definitely need to streamline the lineup.

@@Nova2127U i was thinking the exact same thing, 120hz, 1200 nits brightness.
Higher refresh rate will be nice but I honestly will prefer OLED compared to that.
my dream device would be 512gb, 90-120hz, amoled, 2000 nits ipad mini.@@ArchusKanzaki
Obviously you haven’t used it as a laptop replacement with dedication before.
i just traded my M2 12.9 iPad Pro to someone who was selling their MacBook Air M2 and i have no regrets, the iPad was great and fun at times but only when i would randomly remember i had it and bring it out from under my bed were it was just collecting dust… I do alot of video editing and photo editing and i got really happy when they finally brought out davinci to the iPad but it had a lot of flaws starting off with it not working most of the time and crashing and losing my videos (i even went to settings to change my ram usage and set it to max but it didn’t help) but with this MacBook which is the same processor on the ipad its just completely different, i could actually edit videos and use crazy nodes and color grades and still export in less than 20 seconds!
Should use it with a VOIP. No need for a iPhone and smartphone anymore when your tablet can connect cellular data
What can it do a dedicated iphone could not ?
I'm still hanging tough with my 11 inch m1 ipad. I still use it all the time lol
Very level-headed response in my opinion. -what kind of company do you work for?
I like that the iPad is modular and when you don't need or want a keyboard you can carry it around to play games, read, post on social and use a web browser. I have not run into any issues with the browser or browsers on the iPad and websites. You have to understand what you want to do and buy the correct device. iPads are great for most tasks even video and photo editing and have great accessories and modularity. A great replacement for most people.
I bring my iPad to work or a day trip, but use my laptop when I’m home. Looking at a MacBook Pro now, but damn they are expensive.
Another idea: Just give MacOS to the iPad pros.
Isn’t that basically a microsoft surface- apple edition
lol yeah tablet mode for ipad OS, you could swap through both
something like that has been rumored, hopefully it actually comes to the ipad pro.
This, just have it dual boot. it has the same chip, enough ram everything.
Hmm.. yeah why not. I like that idea
Exactly i wanted to replace my Dell laptop with an tablet but All of the apps that i use daily are just more optimiesed on Windows or Mac os like word, Power point i just hate those apps like keynote or notes. Maybe it has better performance but i face All of the problems.
Got a iPad 7th working fine as a tablet. It even worked out better than the chrome books I had for school.
Is synonyms to burger melting in your mouth expect here it’s the iPad in your hands
Its fundamentals sound and as years go by can morph into anything your life needs - for being a notebook/sketch book, amazing media player, best possible mobile gaming machine to best kindle there can be, best place to browse your photo albums and music.
I spent the extra money and got a MacBook
Didn’t want to use a iPad like a laptop I wanted a laptop lmao
But it’s a trend I’ve noticed at college most students use a iPad like a laptop
The Macbook is cheaper then an iPad. That´s the problem.

The current lineup is too convoluted, pricey, and usually just doesn't make sense.
just fyi you can run desktop linux alongside android on your tab s8 with termux. it works insanely well.
I’m watching on an old iPad Air 2. Still works great.
Same
For me, my iPad Pro suits my use cases very well.
I wfh and I do the basics on my iPad but my main workload only works on my iMac
Very well said.
They function fine, but their in-between size combines the worst of a laptop and desktop, not the best of them.
merge the ipad mini - ipad - ipad air to ipad air and 9.5 screen. the pros left as is
I like them. But not as a main device. I just use them in bed or on the couch to watch videos or read the news.
I also find the filesystem on Android devices easier to handle at times.
does the problem on Safari on iPad get resolved by requesting to use the desktop site? cos I never had an issue using websites.
The normal iPad has such a bad compatability with the Apple pencil
any tips for upcoming channels?😁
Did they try *View as Desktop* option?
Probably not
Yeah I haven’t run into any website issues that they mention, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
@@ComfyChroma definitely agree. 3rd party apps that can’t be downloaded is my No.1 complaint
@@TEAML3ZAR right I’m sure it depends on the specific app or maybe even iPad model, but I know that with my pro I can download web extensions, and I’ve downloaded things from the web. Again though I’m sure your mileage may vary.
@@ComfyChroma I’m not taking about “web extensions”. I’m talking about whole apps that are not available on the App Store

Am I the only person who's never put their phone in their back pocket.
Nope, I've never done it either. I've never understood why people do that, even before Bendgate. Same reason why I've never understood why people put their wallets in their back pockets.
Nope! I also only put my phone in my front left pocket.just like with my wallet, front right pocket only.
All girls I’ve seen have their phones in their back pockets. I guess only women do it and not us dudes 😂
I stopped when they started bending
@@SgtReaper22 Women’s pockets are very shallow and men’s pockets are very deep. Idk why, misogyny maybe lol
Also, smartphones have gotten bigger since 2014 that’s why they look so big in women’s back pockets, also, most women I’ve seen in my country have iPhone 11 or iPhone 13 and such rarely a pro max model, I’ve only seen one girl with an iPhone 12 Pro Max lol all others have standard models, probably because the iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t fit at all lol
My iPad is used for surfing the web, watching tv, and reading books. Couldn’t live without it. But I would not use it for “working”.
Just FYI you can resize apps on iPad now that they’ve added stage manager, although I still think they should make something like Samsung Dexter for when you connect it to a monitor
That’s what stage manager is…works on external monitors on all M1 and newer iPads
I've ditched my laptop when the galaxy tab 8 Pro came out and only a few times I needed a laptop... I use in dex mode 99% of the time
I do everything on my desktop but when I'm away I always use my iPad.
The fanboys just going to tell you to just buy the keyboard. But for that you could just get a laptop..
You're usually able to access most desktop sites on the iPad
Bro said “your probably watching this video on your ipad right now “ 😅 got me
I use my ipad pro maily for creative work like writing music, or Illistrations, and some photo editing. In my opinion if your work flow doesnt need a Stylus of mac book air.
When you said “You’re probably watching this on your iPad in multitask mode with 3 windows…”
Well, this was in Picture-in-picture while I was scrolling facebook 😂
The pricing is on purpose to get people to spend more money. Apple doesn't care about you, they care about profits.
Mostly a desktop user and not using laptops much but ipad/tablets are good like 2. Device except for my big ass phone
I bought a 9th Gen iPad for like $320 in January. I fucking love it. I don’t go anywhere without it. 🥰
I use my pro for research, notes (typed and written), content consumption, and travel media management. I can quickly edit/scrub/delete photos and videos from external drives. I rarely feel the need to travel with my laptop for general use.
Nice video. Good discussion. I’ll be getting an iPad soon, just haven’t decided which model to get yet
I have an iPad 9 but I still use it as companion to my laptop. Since there’s a lot of stuff, my iPad does good but if I want to play any game I reach for my computer computer.
If Apple computers can run steam, even if they’re not gaming computers, the iPad Pro, the iPad Air should be able to run steam and be able to play some of those games on there
apple computers run steam what are you talking about.
@@christopherfortineux6937 I’m talking about the iPads need to be able to run steam
@@BeardsBaconTechApple do not allow 3rd party stores on iOS

I agree with you. I have an ipad mini i use watch movies and for my notes i need for work. I use microsoft notes, so i go back to my pc. i have my notes on Windows pc. I agree with your point.
My Metapen cost my $16 and it's works fine.
I did some Cobalt programming on college, it was great!

Except with the New 3DS it was only like 3 games
I have a iPad 9th gen with 256 gb and it’s doing everything I want it to do
I bought the 5g mini one recently for work. I use mapping software and it's the fastest cheapest tablet with 5g and a good size. the only other tablet they give us for work is still on 4g and just sucks big time for everything from navigation on home screen to laggy websites. Think thats a samsung tab 7 lite
i use the ipad pro from 2020 11 inch, but then again i also have mac mini m1, and m2 macbook air, so barely use it
I’m a business owner and I’d mostly use it for organizing, watching content, and maybe editing some photos. it could never replace my MacBook.
At 1:07 I NEED someone to tell me what that movie is PLEASE
Having used the 12.9" ipad pro since it came out each generation. Honestly, 15" one would be amazing
when pair even the old iPad with my phone, it always has internet without a built in cellular... I think this may be a tech bubble issue perhaps?
I used the 12" iPad pro for internet surfing and art (Procreate).
So I'm good.
Originally I called them big iPhones with less features
Safari on iOS has a lot of limitations. I know this as a web dev I have had to workaround a lot of things. Mostly iPhone's Safari though
