  • A gate that closes by itself is really a must, because a gate that is accidentally left open can be an invitation to enter, it can also allow for young kids and pets to escape, and you don't want that. There's an easy fix, I'll show you how to install a gate spring, so your gate will shut by itself.

    Perfect! You explained everything so clearly and told me everything that I needed to know (including how to remove the hinge screw and attach on top of the hinge). I'm pleased to say I have now attached my own gate spring ... and it works!

    Great vid. One thing that might be obvious to mechanically inclined people would be that you do need an auto-latch system for this to work as well. I know it's obvious, but I can see a lot of people attaching this to a dead or manual latch, and wondering why it doesn't work like in the video.

    Mitre 10 - what do you do when your hinge pins are directly on the center of the post? When I installed my spring exactly as you did, the gates opens. My gate is hung on pins which are mounted in the middle of the post holding the gate, therefore the spring is not able to be installed level, it will either be sticking out from the top or from the bottom. Could you tell me how this is done?

    any tips on what products would help my garden gate from slamming? Its only a small waist height picket fence gate, but i feel with repetitive gate shutting, the gate will deteriorate faster. Any ideas on how I can do this?

    • @mitre10nz

      Hey Patrick, do you have a gate spring on there? If you're wanting a softer close, might be worth having a look at other options - pop in to your local store and have a chat to the team, they'll be able to show you what's available 👍

      Mitre 10 New Zealand I’m based in uk, so can’t go
      Into a store but thanks. Yes I have just installed the spring thinking that would stop the slam, or at least control it, but now realised it just makes slam harder. Want some sort of dampening system as over time the gate bracket will come loose (as only a waist high picket fence gate)

    can you tell me what side of the gate does the spring mount for an outward swinging gate. I ran into the gate wanting to stay open approximately 4-5 inches. wih the spring on the hinge side. does the spring stay on the inside of the gate?

    • @saadsiddiqui16
      @saadsiddiqui16 6 лет назад +4

      Jim Holmes , install inside with spring flipped, top going down and of course bottom side coming up. Basically, direction of coil is what the gate will follow, so you need to keep the spring rotation where your door is closing.

    Great video. Apparently ozzie ironmongery is much better than English!? Mine from crappy England's 'BnQ' comes with weak tiny flat head screws that shear straight away and the rivit has the tiniest insert and massive head which only allows you to do a quarter turn before pinging out!? 😡 so angry right now!! Lol

    So if my gate swings outward I have to put the spring outside the gate where it's visible to everyone?

    • @mitre10nz
      @mitre10nz  9 месяцев назад

      You'll need to attach the gate spring to the hinge side, so if your hinges are on the outside then yes - that's where you'll need to install your spring. They do come in black as well, so if your gate is darker then you could always go for that option so it is less noticeable 👍 ^Matt

  • @mjh5437

    Glue the rivet into the hole...they tend to work themselves loose and get lost on the ground below after all the constant gate bangings.

    What about the noise and vibration created by the 'gate slam' or 'concussion'? This is very annoying especially if the gate is close to the house or the neighbour's house. You also need something to stop that.

    I am having no joy at all with this. My gate opens the other side and no matter what I try - all it does is OPEN the gate - not close it :(
    I have put the top bracket on the post and the bottom one on the gate - as directed by the [very poor] instructions which came with the spring.
    I've tried screwing the tension both left AND right - and both ways the gate just opens. Where am I going wrong?
