- A gate that closes by itself is really a must, because a gate that is accidentally left open can be an invitation to enter, it can also allow for young kids and pets to escape, and you don't want that. There's an easy fix, I'll show you how to install a gate spring, so your gate will shut by itself.

Mate, I have watched a few of these spring installation vids (not sure why really) yours without a doubt is the best, no fuss, straight to the point. Job done. Excellent YouTubing!
Perfect! You explained everything so clearly and told me everything that I needed to know (including how to remove the hinge screw and attach on top of the hinge). I'm pleased to say I have now attached my own gate spring ... and it works!

Very easy and useful. I purchased the spring from Amazon and was easy to install thanks to the video.
My neighbours dog was always getting out , so I've ordered one of these of Amazon, greetings from Manchester England.👌
Thank you mate from the UK. Mine had zero instructions and you made it so easy. Good work
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback 👍 ^Billie
Watched this video a few times, helped loads as we now have a self closing gate. Thanks for your guidance
I love the subtitles - Kiwis must keep their PITS behind closed gates :)
The gate latch looks fab..must find video for that too!!
really good video thank you and i love the tip of using the hinge so thank you
Thanks great advice all the best from Scotland.
Just the solution In looking for, thank you!
This was very useful thanks! I couldn't quite picture it, and I did it in just 3 minutes thanks to your video!
Cool. It's great to know the video helped you out! ^Tim
Very clear and prisise instructions. Also Very good visuals.
Nice one. Thank you mitre 10

Wow very useful video Thank you
Nice 1iam putting it on my gate 2 day thanks for the video mate
Thanks. Helpful vid: much appreciated.
Thanks heaps Paul 😊
I appreciate your video. Thanks a lot.
Very easy and usefull information 👍👍
Seems simple enough. Thanks
Good job fella
Great vid. One thing that might be obvious to mechanically inclined people would be that you do need an auto-latch system for this to work as well. I know it's obvious, but I can see a lot of people attaching this to a dead or manual latch, and wondering why it doesn't work like in the video.
Good idea brother
Super sir .... it's very nice and easy
In malaysia I can't get this spring come with plate to skru
Mitre 10 - what do you do when your hinge pins are directly on the center of the post? When I installed my spring exactly as you did, the gates opens. My gate is hung on pins which are mounted in the middle of the post holding the gate, therefore the spring is not able to be installed level, it will either be sticking out from the top or from the bottom. Could you tell me how this is done?
Wooowww,, simple task.. i like it
Thank you.
How much do you charge to come to the UK to fit one of these?
Fantastic for the money!
puzzle solved , good on ia mate
This is very good and chipest price cost making gate owssom
That catch looks brilliant, what is it called?
Not sure what that exact model was sorry - current range is linked below, and there will potentially be more options available in-store at your local.

its ok this video but how do you know what size spring to get? 14" 10" 8" ??
Muy bueno
Thanks
Awesome! To keep tugs, invaders and nosey folks out!!!
I think you mean THUGS? 😂🤣
any tips on what products would help my garden gate from slamming? Its only a small waist height picket fence gate, but i feel with repetitive gate shutting, the gate will deteriorate faster. Any ideas on how I can do this?
Hey Patrick, do you have a gate spring on there? If you're wanting a softer close, might be worth having a look at other options - pop in to your local store and have a chat to the team, they'll be able to show you what's available 👍
Mitre 10 New Zealand I’m based in uk, so can’t go
Into a store but thanks. Yes I have just installed the spring thinking that would stop the slam, or at least control it, but now realised it just makes slam harder. Want some sort of dampening system as over time the gate bracket will come loose (as only a waist high picket fence gate)
Very easy.
were to purchase
Great thanks, tho' I wouldn't need one if the postie could be bothered closing the gate behind him!
Will this style of spring still work if the gate opens both ways push and pull thanks
Hey Blake, technically yes, but the gate should open on the side the spring is installed to be able to fully open it 😃
...WOW OKAY!!!
Thanks, mate. Mine came with no instructions.
My hinge is on other side do I need to mount top on the post and bottom on door?
Technically yes, but the gate should open on the side the spring is installed to be able to fully open it. ^James
can you tell me what side of the gate does the spring mount for an outward swinging gate. I ran into the gate wanting to stay open approximately 4-5 inches. wih the spring on the hinge side. does the spring stay on the inside of the gate?
Jim Holmes , install inside with spring flipped, top going down and of course bottom side coming up. Basically, direction of coil is what the gate will follow, so you need to keep the spring rotation where your door is closing.
good wark
cool
help pls. following this held my gate open, not closed. what did I do wrong?
don't worry! found the answer in someone else's comment! sorted :-) go me!
I've been trying to fit a spring on my mums gate but the spring keeps opening the gate instead, I tried flipping the spring but the same problem, the gate hinges are on the left side of my gate.
What am I doing wrong here?
You are turning the spring the wrong way
this was the answer I needed aswell. thank you! I've done it now wohoo
can i install this on my iron heavy gate?
May not be strong enough Parvinder, you might want to check in with your local store for suggestions on best product
can someone please tell me what the brand/name of the exact spring he used is?
Hi Lauren, Stan used a Zenith gate spring. They come in a variety of sizes www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/safety-security/home-security/padlocks-bolts/c/RF6081?q=%3ARELEVANCY%3AbrandName_uFilter%3AZenith%3AfineLine_uFilter%3AGate+latch+%26+accessories&inStockSelectedStore=false&inStockNationwide=false

good
Great video. Apparently ozzie ironmongery is much better than English!? Mine from crappy England's 'BnQ' comes with weak tiny flat head screws that shear straight away and the rivit has the tiniest insert and massive head which only allows you to do a quarter turn before pinging out!? 😡 so angry right now!! Lol
Me too crappy bnq and cant find the rivits now :'(
So if my gate swings outward I have to put the spring outside the gate where it's visible to everyone?
You'll need to attach the gate spring to the hinge side, so if your hinges are on the outside then yes - that's where you'll need to install your spring. They do come in black as well, so if your gate is darker then you could always go for that option so it is less noticeable 👍 ^Matt
Glue the rivet into the hole...they tend to work themselves loose and get lost on the ground below after all the constant gate bangings.
Great tip MJ 👍 ^Billie
Maybe glue's not such a great idea if you want to adjust it again later, but something like BluTack should help.
No eye protection?
Heya! Thanks for the feedback, eye protection is voluntary but we really appreciate this feedback for future videos 😊 ^Cam
sending mine back didn't do anything
BUT WHAT DO I DO WHEN IT DOES HAVE THE FRAME ALL AROUND??! *crying*
Hey Caz, pop in and have a chat to the team at your local store (Mitre 10 if you're in NZ, or a reputable local hardware store if not) with a picture of your set up. They'll be able to advise on options for your specific scenario 😃
I feel more masculine just listening to this bloke
What about the noise and vibration created by the 'gate slam' or 'concussion'? This is very annoying especially if the gate is close to the house or the neighbour's house. You also need something to stop that.
Ear plugs
I am having no joy at all with this. My gate opens the other side and no matter what I try - all it does is OPEN the gate - not close it :(
I have put the top bracket on the post and the bottom one on the gate - as directed by the [very poor] instructions which came with the spring.
I've tried screwing the tension both left AND right - and both ways the gate just opens. Where am I going wrong?
Maybe try to put the spring on the outside
Hi did you fix this? I have same issue.
Please use safety glasses.
Snowy he would really look like a sissy if he did that for this sissy job.
