    I’ve been watching your videos for 2 years as a desperate mum, and through your enthusiasm, expressions and helpful tips and demonstrations, we’ve been able to make progress for my now 4 year old boy with expressive speech delay. He isn’t verbally manding but knows many words and shows knowledge. There isn’t a speech pathologist that has helped as much as you. So grateful for you, thank you 🙏
    I would love to know from your experience, the signs that a child will start being conversational?

      Try onomatopoeias! Those fun “sounds” like “uh oh! Whoops! Wee!! Yay! Bang! Crash! Gulp! Ah choo!” Etc! During play or just while being silly! I did a video on this called “the best way to get a child to talk” I believe! Try encouraging these & using these during your daily routine & see if she will begin to immigrate! If not - check out my video on “How to Increase Toddler Imitation Skills” :)

    • @TheSpeechScoop

      Oh absolutely! Just remember to keep it light & fun! Less commands, just lots of modeling of words during play or offering choices with single word options - emphasis on the vowels & give the item after any attempt!

    Do you have any suggestions with helping my daughter speak more conversational? For the most part she will list out steps. Instead of "I want to go to the store" she'll say "get up, put on my clothes, mommy puts on clothes, put on my shoes, get in car and go to store!" i try not to correct her literally i just say "oh okay! So, you would like to go to the store huh?" She's almost 4

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  3 года назад +1

      Honestly I might work on “Main Idea” with her to see if she comprehends simple main ideas first, because that may be what is causing this! Check out teachers pay teachers pre-k main idea worksheets & grab a visual chart off of google & see if you can explain the concept of main idea to her & that way she can begin understanding how to express HER main idea (instead of just the sequence or details) let me know if this makes sense!

    Hey I am new to your channel and love the great suggestions I’ve seen so far. My son is 3 1/2 and has the appreciate vocabulary word count, however it consists of a few two word phrases but mainly singing full nursery rhyme songs. He aged out of early intervention at 3 but was receiving services. We are missing expressing himself with words and 3-4 sentences. Is he behind with language

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  2 года назад

      I would check his inventory to ensure he has action words / verbs and functional communication - sometimes a child can have all the nouns in the world but is missing functionality with the verbs/actions. if he DOES have them, then simply build his attribute list by offering choices and expanding on what he says "i.e. Bounce ball" = you say "BOUNCE RED BALL!" or "BOUNCE BIG BALL!" work on categories (location, size, shape, color, function) and descriptive words, big/little, wet/dry, happy/sad, as well as prepositions (in, on, under, next to, etc) and continue to build off of what he is saying when playing!

  • @oprahwilliams8752

    I can't find my original comment so amma just ask here. My son has dropped new words. He wasn't saying anything before and uses gestures quite a bit now. He's almost 2. He said brush but it sounds like ush. And open like when. Should I be focusing more on the sounds of the words or is it okay that only I understand him? Juice sounds like soosh. He does not use them consistently either he often reverts back to his gesturing. Do I continue or emphasize the words he's trying to say. (He wasn't saying a thing so I'm really happy for these and I do lots of cheers when he attempts a word and he likes that. All thanks to you!) P.s. he chooses to ignore me sometimes what do I do about that. I'll tell him "pick it up" today and he will and tomorrow he ignores me for the same task and will even have a full blown crying fit to avoid picking up the toy and putting it back in its box.

    In the “use your words” section where you have the milk example and are drinking it and hoping for the child to also prompt to say milk also, what do you do if that leads to frustration tantrums instead? That’s what tends to happen with my 26 month old.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  3 года назад +3

      If you child HAS the word "MILK" I would prompt him by saying, Oh! MILK! Did you want MILK?! It is usually helpful to have another person, if possible, there with you as well to model the behavior that you're looking for (him to say milk) if not, no big deal, say milk, take 1 sip, say milk, take another sip. If your child has the word, they should catch on at/around 50 trials to modeling your prompts. IF you child does NOT have the word milk, and does not typically repeat sounds, I might take a photo of milk and show him how to give it to you and you give him milk (modified PECS - picture exchange system) and use the word "milk" each time. Then, eventually, we fade off of the picture exchange and into the /M/ sound. IF your child DOES have the /m/ sound, use the /m/ hand cue from this video ruclips.net/video/ORsbeFAALoo/видео.html and accept that to begin, (so you would prompt "MMMMM" instead of saying "milk" because it is easier and if you are prompting that, that means your child is able to do it!) If they are able to say milk, "mmm" and/or use the picture exchange system and they simply do not want to comply with the prompt/your request..... put the milk back and walk away. This will raise the child's motivation to comply with the request the next time (which could be as soon as 30 seconds after! Just walk back in and act like it next happened and start over again!) I know it's a lot of information but hope this helped at least a little!

    “Use your words” my 4 y/o is verbal and has the word yet when he’s really emotional he won’t use them and often whines, whispers or responds with humph 😤 What do you recommend then if I don’t know what he needs/wants?

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  2 года назад

      I would recommend having pictures on the fridge or sentence strips or something with a visual so he can use that to communicate. Sometimes kids have words but during emotional times they can’t access the words which will often create a tantrum. I would just model what you think he wants as well like “I want chips! “ And point to the chips while they are out of reach and then hand him a chipper two and do it again over and over and over again and then wait and see if he says it without the model
      Not to make him mad just to give him the words to practice saying it over and over again and then pointing and waiting to see what happens! Be excited & try to make it fun!

    My daughter has a speech delay. She is able to get her needs across with one or two words. Mommy milk ‘ Mommy tub’ Help me and I’ll ask help with what. She will tell me. She also repeats me a lot during play time. Able to Identify things. Just won’t talk in sentences and struggles with answering questions. How old are you or what’s your name.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  3 года назад +3

      Hey Shanay! I have 2 videos on similar topics 1) how to teach a child to combine words ruclips.net/video/mstB5XWmTcA/видео.html and 2) how to teach phrases! ruclips.net/video/NKKx5jdfgpU/видео.html Here are the links! ALSO though, specifically for the example that you provided, try adding in a prepositions, verbs or spatial concepts such as "Mommy IN tub?!" Or "Mommy OUT of tub?!" (and physically get in and out of the tub - or do the same with her! to SHOW her and help her with making her request more specific!) or for example with snacks, if she says "Mommy snack!" you could say something like "Mommy OPEN snack?! or Mommy THROW snack?!" and literally model you opening the snack in front of your mouth (to draw the attention there) and then also model by physically throwing the gummy when you say throw! lol This will again get her attention, give her power through the choice and prompt her to make her request more specific but also she will probably think its funny! lol Let me know how these go!

      yes! put all of his favorite toys/puzzles in see through plastic containers in an area where he can see them but not reach them. Then it will present an opportunity for him to ASK or REQUEST a toy (by pointing or using words) and then that will allow you to control the pieces of the toy or puzzle, and give him one at a time, having him request each/follow a direction with each and/or complete a play routine with each (try to make it as fun as possible!) and if he tantrums, just put the toy away where it was and walk away. (we don't want to give in to any behaviors while we are teaching the new requesting and playing routine!) OR try HIDING his toys or the pieces of the toys to begin with, and that way you find one, he finds one, use terms like "my turn" "your turn" to find each piece, then you each play with the toys together once you find all of them. Even if they don't want to interact, we have to try to make them interact because interaction is how they LEARN, especially during play time with you!! You can do it!! :)
