I'm a librarian and we get inquiries about ChatGPT-generated content all the time. And one of the things we find consistently is it makes things up. It invents citations to articles that doesn't exist. so there may be no rational basis for a lot of this in terms of what it generated.
I'm an engineer. All AI "generation" systems at present work like this, trust me 😂😂
Yes this is known as “hallucinations” and it’s very common. There is rational basis for what it says…it’s based on the corpus of knowledge that it has “ingested.” But it definitely can invent data that’s wrong, and gives absolutely no indication that such data is wrong.

@@elonex7659 Ah - yeah. It's pretty much changing the way we do reference work. When someone asks me to run down a citation, I now start with, "How did you get this?" because by definition, citations should be easy to find (and ChatGPT really thinks the Harvard Law Review needs to have MORE articles, I guess, given the amount of time they invent citations to that publication). If I don't find it right off the bat and the "citation" came from a chatbot, I'm not exactly going to spend half a day trying to chase it down...
I'm currently writing a tutorial on information literacy and the limitations of AI (and the way they can waste time in this way when people who've only been reading surface-level media reports seem to see them as time-savers) is a new wrinkle on that kind of work.
Well this was fun! The eye look is especially great. As for AI - I've read somewhere that ChatGP (and AI like it) isn't meant to actually be a thinking entity or to be accurate - instead, it's been programmed to answer as a human would. When you evaluate its answers that way, it makes a lot of sense: it makes things up (to the point of gibberish sometimes) in an attempt to sound like a person, not to answer truthfully. So it probably grabbed a bunch of info about Lisa Eldridge and makeup tutorials, and cosmetics in general, and threw it all together.
My only other thought on AI is that all the things they're trying to have it do now are creative things like writing and art, but do we really need that, as a society? We have writers and artists (most of whom are struggling to get paid work.) I need AI to clean my kitchen for me and do my laundry and fix my car and stay on hold with my insurance company. I need it to do those annoying tasks and free up time for humans to do the creative stuff, thanks!
I agree.... hands off our creative industries (we are all good in that department thanks) and start changing plugs and cleaning out the cat litter please ! XX

ChatGPT is the AI equivalent of an undergrad student writing a paper on a topic they don't know but that is due in the next half hour. It does a web search but doesn't have access to pictures, sounds or video, just text. And it orders the results by quantity, not quality.
So, top hits for Lisa Eldridge is that she's a makeup artist with her own line of products.
A makeup routine consists, in order of the amount of text on each product, of foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, lips, blush, highlighter then other things like bronzer, mascara, brows, powder. But a lot of the tutorials I see tend to use the same bronzer, powder, mascara and brow products so they skip over these.
Lisa Eldridge has a foundation, so it uses that. Shade 5 is probably the most commonly mentioned foundation shade regardless of brand, so it's picked that. It's a safe bet. Concealer's a must but it can't find a Lisa Eldridge one so it makes one up ("hallucination").
Since it can't see and doesn't understand the meaning of language, it makes a lot of leaps that are wrong but are based on volume. Myth is mentioned a lot, champagne and brown eyeshadows are mentioned a lot, therefore Myth must contain champagne and brown. Lisa Eldridge lip gloss are nourishing, people use nourishing lip products before lipstick, therefore Lisa Eldridge lips gloss goes on before lipstick.
The lipstick technique might be it filtering on makeup artist methods since most text refers to how products wear or the colours than on the application. Again, it know what the colours are but it's picked 2 common ones and used them in an ombre style MUA look.
Great video, though! It's cool to see how ChatGPT can and can't be applied and it'll be interesting to see how the tech changes as a result.

Also Chat GPT is working off information through 2021, which is probably relevant for some of what it spit back out. It hasn't been "trained" on anything that happened in the last 2 years so it's "guessing" a lot.
Why am I not surprised that the AI came up with a look very similar to the one Sean Young wore as Rachel in Blade Runner (1982)?!

i must say, that eyelook is gorgeous and it's quite an advertisement for the palette. the fact that the pink shimmer didn't budge even though you put and blended that deep color in your socket and it was still shining through that eyeliner you did with the same deep shade is honestly quite impressive!
This could be a mini-series in its self- do a Mary Greenwell look, do a Charlotte tilbury look, a Kevyn aucoin and so on 😂
As a copywriter, I have to say I'm not too worried about AI coming for my job (for the time being anyway). I was messing around with ChatGPT recently to see if it could help me with certain tasks, but - as you discovered in this video - it fabricates information... going as far as misattributing quotes and making up biographical details!! On top of that, it just doesn't sound like a person, and that human touch is such an important part of connecting with people through text. I love the idea of using it for creative prompts like this. But ultimately, it's a flawed tool and no replacement for a human brain.
It won’t be too long before it becomes as sophisticated as a human.

@@lesleyshipley8032 Humans are pretty sophisticated, I don't think it would be easy to create something artificial with the same computing power. Just think about all the information we store, all the things a single person can be good at, creatively, as well. When a person makes art, for example, they're moved by personal experience and motivated by the need to express something that's been bouncing around the inside of their skull for too long. A robot doesn't have experiences, independently from the ones that are programmed into it, so all it can do is regurgitate history. It's not shaped by a unique personal history and it has no drive (pun intended). Think about when Virginia Woolf said, in a talk called Craftsmanship, that words "are stored with other meanings, with other memories, and they have contracted so many famous marriages in the past". How could AI come up with a phrase like that?

Regardless of our deep and complex nervous system experiences, I do still think that *in time* there will be someone, somewhere attempting to move from crude to ‘human-like’ AI that could catch us out. I guess it depends on who the consumer is.
Same thoughts here as a copywriter! It's been a great tool for brainstorming at the concepting level--and I'll sometimes use it to help get through some writer's block. But it seriously lacks in understanding brand and tone. It would also be another role entirely to feed it all of the pieces of information and tools we use to write to have it successfully synthesize deliverable-stage writing.

I don't think it's going to be long before filters are added to our mirrors. I can imagine them used in changing rooms where our lumps and bumps are removed so we feel good and want to buy the clothes.
Ai terrifies me, where it learns from us Ai has been proven to become biased.

That was really interesting. Please make more such videos with experimental content. Maybe you can ask the AI if it can create historical makeup and then compare it to what you know about historical makeup.😊Or let AI create a make-up for an epoch in which there was no make-up like in our time.

Love this idea! And I'd love to know if Lisa used GPT 3.5 or GPT 4, the difference in the quality of the answers is pretty huge in some cases. I also always ask it to check it's work if I want factual answers, I ask for url sources in my initial prompt too. There's ways to get very high quality input. I would to see Lisa's original prompt! The quality of the answer will most likely differ depending on how the question is framed. I think the answers would be different if she asks for a makeup look for Lisa Eldridge vs if she asks the ai to act as expert makeup artist Lisa Eldridge. So fun!

@@LisaEldridge Never ever! 😂 I think I'm your biggest fan, btw. I was just going to add, having taught for many years...I think makeup and learning can both be vulnerable undertakings and really benefit from that human connection, that human touch.
I loved and feared this in equal measure. I often put my Velvet lipsticks over the glosses - it softens the matt effects, because I have very dry lips. AND I actually do a sort of similar thing where I will put Velvet Ribbon all over my lips, then dab Velvet Jazz in the centre of my lips and sort of blend it outwards... has the AI been looking into my brain?!

Love this Lisa. So fascinating to see how creatives are using Chat GPT as a tool for so many uses, thank you for sharing! A few people have already made this point, but it does make things up because it's a predictive language model - so it's like when you type a few words into Google and it fills in the rest for you based on what it knows other people have searched for. That's why it incorrectly names products from your collection. It has the names, but doesn't necessarily know what's in a palette. Another reason it's given you some wacky suggestions is that Chat GPT is only trained on data up to September 2021 - so it won't know any product, or indeed trend, created after that. I think this video is such a brilliant example of your artistry, because even though you were given dodgy suggestions, you made it look absolutely beautiful. And that's all AI is - a tool we can use, and interpret, and add our own creativity to :)
A lovely video on a topic that I've been thinking about a lot, as someone who tries, at least, to teach writing. I'd really love to see Lisa try makeup looks that other people submit and comment on how they differ from her usual way of doing makeup. This was a treat!

I am currently working as a process analyst in a company that does RPA, that is, Robotic Process Automation, which means replacing humans with robots to do repetitive, boring work. Since I started this job I have noticed that people are terrified of becoming redundant and losing their jobs (which obviously a lot of them will). As a makeup lover, I would hate the idea of makeup artists being replaced with robots, as I really enjoy the chatting we do during the process. But I suppose the "MuA Robots" will eventually be also able to chat with their clients???... (Honestly, that is quite a sad thought to me!)
This is so reminiscent of a video from when Lisa was first on RUclips that had a purple eye with red lips. At one point, Lisa stopped and said something like "this one is going to be a number." And I fell in love with Lisa right then. ❤

I just want to say, the Myth eyeshadow palette is one of the most beautiful and inspiring eye shadow I’ve ever seen. I have aqua eyes and I have always wanted a purple pallette that didn’t make my eyes look watery, wasn’t too warm (instant white-walker blue 😂) or cool toned (dated?). It’s absolutely perfect.

I find that intriguing, because I have been playing with Chat GPT the last few days, and I noticed that it is very reluctant in suggesting specific products, even when asked directly.
I now typed "Design a makeup look for Lisa Eldridge" and it did a list of 8 steps, with no product recommendation, and no specific number of foundation shade

This was so fun! As far as the lips go, I feel like I remember you creating a look before that had red on the outside and pink on the inside! Also, I've seen other looks where there's a darker color on the edge and a lighter in the middle, specially in the fall, people will create those types of statement lips

You did brilliantly, despite the pale foundation, and your skills and cosmetics did well as you looked gorgeous. Funnily enough I've always used your glosses underneath lipstick because my lips are 82 years old and don't like matte anything. The gloss softens the colour, they're wonderful as a lip balm and super on their own.

Makeup and the makeup process is such a personal thing and so meditative. I’d hate to think of giving that up.
Computer programmer here, if I remember correctly ChatGPT is programmed on the content of the internet (up until a year or two ago) to come up with the words that will most likely follow next after the prior words.
The eye style suits and the lips are very Korean styled. I would love to see your take on the AI directions with the browns, your true shade and the lips before the last outer step...

Hi Lisa! Thanks for this interesting video. The pale face and red lip remind me of traditional geisha which span centuries and dynasties of beauty research and revolution. Fascinating.
I absolutely LOVE this look, minus the slightly "too light" base. I most often wear a soft, smokey grey or cool taupe eye without mascara. It does feel more editorial to me. But I always make sure to line my upper waterline with a grey eyeliner to take away the fleshy look of the bare waterline and to give the appearance of a thicker lashline. I also apply the same grey liner to my lower waterline, and lightly apply the same eyeshadow lightly underneath my lower lashes. I'm just not into a lashy look at all on myself... never have been. That lip though, Lisa! :)

Fascinating! Funnily enough I use your gloss under the velvet lipstick (all Rain) just because, after rushing for work, I did this by accident and it worked well. Couldn’t go without mascara though 😂 The AI thing is a bit weird and I don’t think it could ever replace the real Lisa. Loved this ❤
How interesting!!! I love the eye look, I personally never use mascara for my Smoky eye or any eye makeup looks. The lip technique am gonna try! I love using lippy in the centre of the lips, as you said you get more blend ability with a gloss as a base! Can’t wait to have a play with my lip products from you., ❤
Same here. I wear a smoky eyeshadow look (grey or cool taupe) as my signature look, and pretty much never wear mascara. It feels very editorial to me, however, I do line both my upper and lower waterline with a grey eyeliner. That lip WAS incredible..
I actually do that sometimes.. use the gloss first and then go in with a little bit of lipstick if the gloss color needs something a bit extra :)

This was really fun. What is interesting to me is that the application on the lips sort of mimics what is often done on eyes. honestly I don´t think the creativity you have is replaceable, at least not yet

The eye look is actually gorgeous and with the liner, it looks ok without mascara.
I once used it to write my grocery shopping list for me by providing the links to the recipes I wanted to cook. I do not know where it got the ingredients from, but it definitely was not from the ingredients section. If I would have blindly trusted it, I would have needed to get very creative, which at the end of a long working day, is not what I want. I don't think ChatGPT actually understood the content of the eyeshadow palette, it sounds like it's recommending generic shades most commonly used for smokey eyes. I like the final look, with the pale foundation and the lack of lashes, it's reminiscent of David Bowie, though I wouldn't give the chat credit for it, because it didn't really choose a pink shimmer and a purple matt, it wanted you to use neutrals and, then, the look would not have had the same vibe. Now, I have to say, ever since I saw that scene in The Fifth Element, with the Chanel self applying eyeshadow, I have wanted something like that. But, still, no robot, at least at present, could ever do what you do. Your understanding of makeup history and trends, of facial structure, of color theory, of textures and of people's preferences and feelings towards their own faces, not to mention the complicated effects of different lighting conditions and cameras, is far too complex for a robot to grasp. It's your lived knowledge of what foundations have flashback and what moisturizers take makeup well, your experimentation in magnifying mirrors, with various brushes, sponges, etc, that have made you so good at your job. It would be very difficult for a robot to do that, because they only 'know' what their programmers 'tell' them. And it seems like it would be too complicated to build a data base that would encompass all that, especially when one product won't look the same on two people, depending on skin type and skin tone, hair and eye color and color of clothing
