To be like in the 70 and 80 Poland there should be twice the amount of petato, the cutlet should be smashed with a hummer to be half of this thickness (in some places should be see through), and the size should be also 30-50% less, also since getting oil was not so easy it should be used for at least a week, so cook it at a week old many times used oil

I liked that you got Kasia to make one of these kinds of meals to see what it was like!

I remember visiting family in the east, behind the curtain.
We had to exchange money for these trips (so these countries did get some foreign exchange) and I took my monthly allowance.
When we visited the local ice-cream shop on a trip, I was so surprised by the low prices and even more so, when I realized that I could have bought almost everything they had in stock, with just my pocket money.

As i know, there was a story about ussr officials visiting the USA. It was when fast food took off. And soviets just make an adaptation of hamburger, by removing bread and added a mashed potato. But soviet cutlet wasnt like the hamburger one. Half of it is bread. Yeah meat mixed with bread. Simple and economical.

There are a lot Russians here in San Francisco and there were some mid to small size stores with Russian focused foods. These stores had a lot of cured meats and cold cuts and sausages. One I saw in refrigerated case was labeled 'Soviet Sausage' Looked very fatty. I passed on that but others were very tasty. They also sold Estonian beer in several varieties all of which were really good but a lot of the store was empty. They had two bottles of each beer the rest was empty space. I found the emptiness of the store kinda ironic.

The cutlets were in those better times. The worse ones had mortadella breaded in breadcrumbs. Except that this mordala was not very similar to the Italian one... Baloney seems to be something similar.

That meal looks delicious! After my next trip to the grocery store, I am going to recreate it.

Looking at politics through the lens of food really shows the problems with communism, doesn't it? Think with your stomach! ;-)

There is no such thing as "Communist food", just as little as there is something called "Capitalist food". So this is so dumb right from the start.

This is a bit of a misconception. Plenty of countries in the east kept their traditional dishes, and plenty of countries in the west lost theirs. Many of the UK's traditional dishes were wiped out by war and postwar rationing too

As someone who witnessed it this isn’t true at all. Life in the west was infinitely better than in the Soviet Union. Not even remotely close. In fact, Estonian cuisine and culture was in many ways better preserved in the western diaspora. This video is very accurate.

nah it wasn't bad. food was actually quite good, especially when you consider thatj the availability of extra spices and other ingredients was low. And look at the capitalist British cuisine, it's even worse than the PRL's one
